Zur Methode des Epitomierens am Beispiel der pseudoclementinischen epitome prior. Die Entstehung der altkatholischen Kirche: The guarantor of the metaphysical notions is the true prophet, whose call has to be proved by the coming true of his predictions.
The basic document belongs to Coele-Syria, where it may have come into existence in the middle of the 3rd century Waitz, Pseudoklementinen , 72ff. It certainly was not widely disseminated, and underwent a first revision at the hands of an Arian theologian, the Homilist. To a profound ethical interest he joined one that was metaphysical, which permitted him to develop a 'doctrinal system' Unlhorn, Homilien , entirely his own, but this, it is true, he was not able to press home everywhere in an entirely consistent way upon the material that already lay before him.
Pseudo-Clementine Homilies
The doctrine of the syzygies, the opposite pairs, which the Homilist finds everywhere in the world, even in the being of God, provides a foundation for that opposition of Peter to Simon which becomes the leading motif of the story. The critical position which the Homilist occupies in reference to the OT is noteworthy Rehm, Entstehung His attitude to the Trinitarian question XVI 16; XX 7 ties him down to the time before the Nicene Creed, probably to the first two decades of the 4th century; he too may have written in Coele-Syria.
Philosophy, rhetoric and illusions in the Pseudo-Clementine literature. Retoriek en dialectiek in de Pseudo-Clementinen. De zoektocht naar de ware 'Sophia' in de disputen met Appion. Lucrecio en Isidoro de Sevilla. The emergence of a clearer canon of Christian scripture in the late second century coincided with a pronounced debate over the proper method for interpreting the texts contained therein. Issues of canonicity were therefore inseparable Issues of canonicity were therefore inseparable from debates over exegesis and hermeneutics. Most of the texts and authors involved in this struggle—such as Marcion, Valentinus, and Irenaeus—have received ample scholarly attention, but one seems to have been largely overlooked, namely, the Letter of Peter to James that stands at the head of the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies.
This short letter demonstrates a remarkable self-awareness of the possibility of misinterpretation, that is, a lack of correspondence between what exists in the mind of the source and what is expressed by those in the subsequent chain of interpretive transmission, and it offers a solution based on a fictitious Jewish precedent, which, while acknowledging the necessity of interpretation, nevertheless attempts to provide strict boundaries within which proper interpretation can occur. Yet the Letter of Peter to James is distinct in the prominence granted to the character of Peter, and in the secrecy of the books about which it speaks.
The Syriac Clementine Recognitions and Homilies: The First Complete Translation of the Text. The Syriac Clementine Recognitions and Homilies is the first ever complete translation into a modern language of this important historical document relating to the origins of Judaism and Christianity. Clement also relays the travels of the Apostle Peter in his attempt to stop a false version of Christianity from being spread throughout the Roman Empire by an insidious deceiver.
The narrative concludes with an amazing life story retold by the author. This astonishing document, having been suppressed for nearly two millennia, contains revelations about the formative years leading up to the split between Jews and Christians, and has the potential to revolutionize modern understandings of religion and philosophy. The text is written in Syriac, a dialect of the Aramaic language spoken by Jesus and his Apostles. The Clementine Recognitions and Homilies has previously only been available through altered Greek and Latin recensions and has become a topic of great controversy among Biblical scholars for the past five centuries.
Now, for the first time, the oldest form of the text is made accessible to the public in a complete English translation. Buy the book on Amazon:
