At it's core, this book is a story about justice and revenge, as the Hunter brothers, must deal with enemies at every turn and others seek to claim, or in some cases, reclaim glory they feel they have been denied. The author, Brian Joseph Lambert, does an excellent job of weaving the tale of the various Hunter brothers, and the many foes they are forced to encounter. The tension feels real, the drama, feels real and you truly feel as if any moment could be the last for a character.

He has developed a world rich, with not only characters every character has a well thought out level of depth to them , but history, that is just waiting to be explored, hopefully in other books to come. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and have no doubt I will enjoy it upon several re-reads. I highly recommend this, if you are a fan of action, drama, intrigue and even a bit of romance Ascension has it all. Hats off to Brian Joseph Lambert!

I will gladly give this book a 5 star rating. Though it is very detailed, I believe all the descriptions from the exterior of buildings and gardens to the smallest details of artwork of tapestries, small crests, detailed armor and colors that signifies who belongs with what guilds and the importance of each specific person gives an immaculate visual of how people will be able to portray everything that they read. You can create your own ideas that will give you endless ways that you may believe will partake later in the book and be dumbfounded that easy judgement from your own ideas will not even come close to occurring with what happens.

You'll being lost in the book, excited to learn more and more about what is happening when something is brought to a country's attention, and seeing how people are handling things to protect what they love and cherish for the peace that they wish to keep.

You're able to feel the comradery between each character and what they do to help each other in the best of interests, regardless of if they wish it or not. I believe that these small examples of how well this book has been written are important to what readers will need, no matter how many times they have or have not read books throughout their life, these details and emotions are what traps them to be involved, stay involve, visualize and feel what this writer has written and, as best detailed as it has been through this book, has helped readers match exactly what the writer sees and visualizes himself.

The first thing that struck me about Ascension is that it's not my usual type of reading. It was recommended by a friend and I decided to check it out because I had some extra time. The descriptions are methodical and truly payoff in the end. The characters are diverse and multi-layered. Lambert's writing contains a level of realism within the fantasy world that he's created that surprised me.

The Black Knights have over-arching reasons to do what they do and those motivations often collide with each other. These aren't your normal heroes that follow each other blindly. They are brothers with troubled relationships and sometimes selfish desires. The dialogue sounded true and not stilted, the action was fast paced but understandable, the romance was well placed and deepened the stakes of everything happening. I found myself at one time or another ducking and dodging arrows and sword blows.

I didn't feel like I was reading, Lambert's descriptions placed me on the battlefield with our heroes and I loved it. I'm looking forward to reading the works that come from this series. It's an awesome adventure novel that I hope eventually crosses over into movies. I could see it all happening. Once you read it, you will to!

Highly recommended and enjoyed. It's great to see this level of realism and diversity in writing.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I was all behind Michael and the darkness he brought to table. The characterization of the brothers really brought the entire tale to life. Eric, Shawn, Jeff, Michael and Kyle really sounded and acted like brothers. The fact that they rang true made their journey as Knights even more interesting. The world itself is described in details that place you in the world itself.

Ascensions

The female characters, Cassandra, Tamara Andrea bring strength and wisdom. This book is equal parts action and hope.

I cannot even begin to talk about all the things I hated about this book. I guess the one redeeming quality of this book was that I was curious enough about some elements of the plot to at least read the last pages to find out what was going on with the magic stuff which is the only thing that bumped my score up from a 1 star. Probably my biggest problem with this book was the schizophrenic nature of Cyrene.

She is either so poorly developed it makes it unenjoyable to read or she is really well developed and I despise everything about her. First of all, she can't figure out what to do about the King. She openly and proudly flirts with him, dances with him, takes walks with him alone, hopes he kisses her, etc. But then suddenly out of the blue is acts shocked that he wants her as his mistress??!! Also, I didn't really see anything that makes the Queen so evil other than she really dislikes Cyrene probably because of all the aggressive flirting she's doing with her husband!

And yes, she is mean and spiteful And there is literally never any indication as to why in the world either Cyrene or the King would have any other feelings for each other. It feels so much like two people just trying to hook up regardless of who they hurt. And the only development of the king is those random moments with Cyrene.

I went from being apathetic about both main characters to ardently hoping they would both die a horrible death because they rubbed me the wrong way. And what is the role of the Consort?!! Is the consort really an appointed mistress of the king's which is what consort means who has equal say in everything or just a title someone is using incorrectly? So basically, the plot had some interesting elements, there are a few side characters I'd love to see developed and would be much more interesting to me Kael than Cyrene and hte King, but I can't make myself read the second book.

If you love characters with no moral compass, no depth or strength, and completely and utterly consumed by selfishness, you might enjoy this. If you like some redeeming value in your characters -- stay away. I love a hot, juicy, tension-filled romance. Being there in that romance every step of the way. I like seeing the tension boil over. I like reading the first awkward conversations and seeing those transform into confident flirting and then possibly further. I liked the world that K. Linde created, particularly the whole magical element. Cyrene and King Edric have a few awkward, public conversations together at the beginning.

But a little further on, they get to finally spend some alone time together and get to know each other. Four days of it. Over meals, they found themselves contemplating various cultural differences between the cities of Byern, and at night, they practiced languages and read aloud late into the night.

This romance could have been so fantastic. Despite this shallow romance, I still recommend The Affiliate to fantasy lovers! But The Affiliate is still an interesting fantasy book.

I wasn't overly impressed with the free sample of "The Affiliate," but the comparison someone made to "Throne of Glass," which I very much enjoyed, made me take a chance. I should have gone with my gut.

  6. I agree with everything that was written by reviewer Wendy D. Rambling plot, dislikable characters, etc. I'll also add that this book has obnoxiously poor grammar. For example, "She accepted it, albeit begrudgingly, that she had just done it. Then she abruptly scraps her whole life, abandons her post and runs to another country due to her curiosity about a book whose writing she can't read- and drags two other evidently super-loyal subjects of the realm down with her. And for those who may want to defend this book and say "it's because of her magic," I'll have you go back and look at the chronology of this piece of sophomoric garbage.
