This small tale within Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates has generated numerous versions and adaptations in media. American poet Phoebe Cary —at whose New York City literary gatherings Dodge was a regular guest [15] —wrote a lengthy poem about it called "The Leak in the Dike", published posthumously in , [16] [17] which has been widely anthologized in books of poetry for schoolchildren.

For tourism purposes, statues of the fictional dike-plugging boy have been erected in Dutch locations such as Spaarndam , Madurodam and Harlingen. The statues are sometimes mistakenly titled "Hans Brinker"; others are known as "Peter of Haarlem". The story of the dike-plugging boy is, however, not widely known in the Netherlands—it is a piece of American, rather than Dutch, folklore.

Versions of the story prior to Hans Brinker appear in several English-language publications from onward, including the following British and American publications:. The actual authorship and genesis of the story of the boy and the dike is currently unknown, but it is possibly from a hypothetical but unidentified story by French author Eugenie Foa — , appearing as an alleged English translation, "The Little Dykeman", in Merry's magazine in Although Dodge was not the originator of the story of the boy and the dike, the immense popularity of her novel Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates made the story very widely known.

The story within a story of the nameless little boy's heroism also parallels and emphasizes Hans Brinker's own heroism in the novel. Other names that seem fictitious, such as "Voost", "Broom" or "Rychie", could be corruptions of existing Dutch forms in this case "Joost", "Bram" and "Riekie". In Dutch editions of the book, names and other elements were adapted to make the story more believable to Dutch children; hence, translator P. Andriessen renamed German-sounding "Gretel" to "Griete" in the first Dutch edition of , and Margreet Bruijn changed the main characters' names to the authentically Dutch regional forms of "Hannes" and "Geertje" in her adaptation. The Oxford companion to the American musical: Scribner , ; pp. There is also a sense of kindness and morality in the book that is a relief from the "enemy'-oriented stories of today. I read this with my sons and now send it to my grandsons. Even if the boy is 12, it makes a better read aloud with lots of points for discussion. One person found this helpful. This story is absolutely one of the most entertaining stories I've ever read. It gives you a "look" a Holland in the past while captivating you with the fun story of 5 friends skating from either Haarlem or Leyden to Amsterdam.

It is a fun adventure with surprises along the way. A children's classic, from Holland, especially great bed-time reading for young children say 6 - 12 to give them a feel for Dutch cultural heritage. I last read this book while in sixth grade. I loved the story then and still enjoyed this 're-read. I had forgotten several of the subplots but have always loved old novels that ties everything up in the end.

I've always wanted to read this book when I was younger. I am much older now and enjoyed reading it. A very good read if I say so myself.
