The role of curiosity in design.

He was a hearth cat, not a fence cat, and did not dearly love to sing. In other respects he was normal and hence curious. Last Tuesday afternoon when Miss Godfrey was out Blackie skipped into the grate fireplace in a rear room. He had done this many times before. But he had not climbed up the flue to the chimney. This he did Tuesday. Blackie there remained, perched on the top of the screen separating the apartment flue from the main chimney, crying for assistance. Miss Godfrey, returning, tried to induce her pet to come down.

If you are experienced in felinity, you know that Blackie didn't come down. On Wednesday the cat, curiosity unsatisfied, tried to climb higher—and fell to the first floor. His cries could still be heard by Miss Godfrey; who, to effect Blackie's rescue, communicated with the following departments: Among them they lowered a rope to Blackie.

But it availed neither the cat nor them anything. Thursday morning, just before noon, a plumber opened the rear wall back of the chimney. Blackie was taken out. His fall had injured his back. This is almost always true, in almost all situations. Knowledge is power, and those in power know it. Maybe, a teacher insisting on their version of reality, in spite of evidence to the contrary. Later, it might have been your boss, telling you your question or suggestion is stupid.

We have politicians redefining facts to suit themselves. We have politicians banning journalists from public press conferences. We have tech companies making billions from semi-legally acquired at best , private information. Yet, we have people being locked-up, or on the run for publicising the crimes of those in power. We have news media companies, misusing language to control perception. Now consider these questions, and look at it again.

No matter your political, or moral inclinations regarding Israel, Palestine, or the USA, this headline does three things.

It is very definitely not good journalism. In modern journalism, the lead is seldom buried due to ignorance. Rather, the passive voice is used to hide power from blame. The Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers. They just happened to be protesting at the time. And you thought grammar was unimportant.

The kid is making a clumsy attempt to bury the lead, and hide their culpability. Yet, most of us read it, and are misled without question. Because it was not said by a child. It was said by adults.

Curiosity — Killing the Cat

It was said by a newspaper. The answer to the first question is as simple as it is unfortunate and disturbing. In fact, I answered this question in the first part of this article. Our parents, relatives, carers, and teachers conditioned us. As children, we were conditioned by the people who had power over us. So, why did they do it?

Mostly, they did it because it had been done to them. As always, the most pervasive evil, is the one that creeps up on us, unawares. Consider a couple of new parents.

Proud, protective, nervous, and largely clueless. Most of what they know about raising children, is how their parents raised them. They were taught that respect meant never questioning those in power. As a designer publishing his first blog post, I think this is a good topic to start off our conversations with. Before I begin, let me confess that I am not a proficient writer. Nor do I use words or expressions that will compel you to quote me although I do wish that someday you do.

After a few rounds of questions, I asked him: So, I asked him why he considers himself curious and it to be a differentiating quality. As in, every task is a problem to solve. For a moment I was blank and did not have any follow up question but then I tried to take a different route.
