Full Lesson Plan Overview

In this way, Twain suggests that human existence is absurdly cruel and that all the things that might comfort us, including Satan, are merely stories. The Mysterious Stranger tells the story of Theodore Fischer's encounter with Satan, a youth who claims to be the angel nephew of the original Satan. After demonstrating that the Moral Sense causes human cruelty, Satan changes the careers of several characters to improve their lives, which usually means making them die earlier or become insane to avoid inevitable misery.

Twain uses this character to critique the behavior of humans, but he ultimately suggests that Satan is just a 'dream' that Theodore Fischer has been having. Thus, Twain suggests that human life is either an absurd fiction or an incredibly bleak affair.
