Both actors do powerful, subtle work. The film raises questions about "borders" of many kinds - including racial and sexual - that it doesn't resolve, but it's a memorable, provocative watch. The movie never explains what turned these particular misfits into champions. As a result, it too often feels like a smug rhapsody on success.
Let's leave it at this: Redford's film farewell reminds us of what made his career so memorable, but it definitely won't be among the many movies for which he's long remembered. The Hate U Give It's a classic coming-of-age dilemma, but hardly one irrelevant to adults. This is a remarkable, moving, one-of-a-kind picture. It doesn't matter that we know how Armstrong's missions ended; the filmmaker's immersive approach renders them as chilling and riveting as anything in the fictional Gravity. A Star Is Born For its first hour-plus, A Star Is Born captures the exhilaration of new love and new creation better than any movie in years.
A franchise is born. Beats me what moviegoers thought they hadn't seen a hundred times before in this one-man buddy film.
Where's the sense in taking Hart off that stage, sticking him in a classroom and paying him to write on an actual chalkboard? Moments of actual horror are rare, however, because the director never does much to build cat-and-mouse tension. The House with a Clock in Its Walls It's an unusual recipe for a PG-rated kids' flick, but it works. The director's latest is the movie he was born to make. Everything's so high-toned and important that viewers clearly are supposed to think Merchant Ivory, when, beneath the tuxes and tiaras, this is closer to a second-rate soap.
It's a slapped-together, poorly written spin-off that in no way approaches the serviceable scares of its predecessors.
SEVENTY SEVEN DAYS
A Simple Favor Once you adjust to the fact that A Simple Favor doesn't offer much in the way of psychological suspense, or even psychology, it's a fun ride. That's right, the race for Worst Picture of the Year looks like a lock. A welcome oasis in the movie desert of early fall, Searching is Exhibit A. No sooner had we reached the summit than the clouds parted and gave way to some of the softest, most stunning light I have ever witnessed.

The rest of the park is only accessible by OHV, winter sled or bush-plane. It brings a whole new meaning to remote. I celebrate the first rays of sun warming my face in the morning and yet I respect the unforgiving beauty behind a stormy mountain. I appreciate the liberating sensation of being completely alone, but the solitude has also shown me that—despite my best efforts to thwart such feelings—what I want most is someone to share this adventure with.
Social media is cruel that way. It has an air of vindication for my lifestyle. Matt, your life choices are nothing short of inane, but people like your content, so keep doing you! I mean, how can you hate a picture of Moraine Lake?
I've shot those pictures. But it never sat well with me. Every image I shoot now, I create for somebody: The flora in a hidden glacial meadow? The truck parked beneath the northern lights? Homage to my Dad who gave me the truck that has enabled me to live this life. The old barn beneath the Tetons? There's a special girl from college who knows that's for her.
