Jesus knew that that day would come. Imagine the agony of that!

Let this cup pass from me

Multiply the most horrible pain and suffering by any human by all the people who have ever lived and have yet to live. They know not what they do. Gerald LaRosa Music Minster, Professional Musician I have been recently been concerned and fearful about facing old age and death and how on a linear scale, I am looking at the "horizon" of my life. I have been blessed with wonderful friends, family and memories. I can look back at the "landscape" of my life and praise the Lord that there are green pastures and fruit. Still, it's natural to want to live and enjoy our loved ones without the constraint of the inevitable disease of aging and eventual death.

I know I'll see our Lord and it's a win-win situation. Jesus, facing death, suffered in the garden and asked the Father if this cup can be taken from Him - with this in mind - Human Jesus, God of the universe faced the same concern. This kindled in me a kindred spirit and gave me comfort that I am not alone as Jesus will be beside me as I will someday face my final moments in my earthly garden. Bitter were its drops; gall lay in its depths; there were groans, and sighs, and tears, within the red mixture; but he took it all, and drank it to its dregs, and swallowed all the awful draught.

He drank the cup of salvation, and he ate the bread of affliction. See him, as he drinks the cup in Gethsemane, when the fluid of that cup did mingle with his blood, and make each drop a scalding poison. Mark how the hot feet of pain did travel down his veins. Consider, for example, Isaiah You have drunk the cup of terror, tipping out its last drops.

Thus, when Jesus prays about avoiding the cup, he is alluding to these images from the Scriptures.

I see a Jesus to whom I can relate, one who is much more like me than the superman Jesus who goes to the cross without a second thought and tiny hesitation. I would invite you to consider what the gut-wrenching honesty of Jesus says to you.

If Jesus had prophesied that he would suffer and die, why do you think he prayed for the cup to be taken from him? What does this say about Jesus? What does this say about prayer? He began to bleed before anyone had laid a hand on Him. Did Jesus fear those He knew were coming to lead Him to the cross? Did He fear whips, chains, thorns and spikes?

The Savior Suffers in Gethsemane

Perhaps his humanity recoiled at the thought of having a spike driven through His wrist or at being beaten with ruthless brutality, yet at the beginning of His earthly ministry Jesus had spoken to His disciples about just such an event. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Consider the following passages:.

You are filled with shame instead of glory. And be exposed as uncircumcised!

You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will put her cup in your hand. You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, The cup of horror and desolation, The cup of your sister Samaria.
