I instantly fell in love with them the moment I "met" them, Lyre being this delicious, flirty, tongue-in-cheek incubus you just can't help but like, while Ash is his total opposite: She closed her eyes. The only two people in the world she could trust right now were sitting on either side of her and she couldn't trust them at all. The only regret I have is not having started this series way earlier, even though Chase the Dark has been on my TBR list since forever.

We got two sexy daemon heroes.
He is powerful, dangerous and scary. Personality wise, he is the exact opposite of Lyre. Both makes the perfect heroes. But yes, I do love one of them more: D… I am a sucker for powerful and intense alpha. And Ash pretty much falls into that category. She also has a quite loveable character. She is sweet and although she lacks magic, she can kick ass!
Her sole purpose is to become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons, and make her father proud, who happens to be the head of the Consulate. But when someone went to steal the Sahar Stone, a top secret magical weapon of mass destruction, leaving behind bodies of dead people… Piper was left to take the fall for the crime. So now, Piper is on the run with no one to trust except the two daemon, Lyre and Ash.
But could she trust them? This is a fast paced, heart pumping action packed book. Given there is no romance involved yet , it is high on sexual tension! And with just the right amount of humour. It comes with a lot of surprising twists. It is magical, we got all sorts of daemons and underworld creatures… And great world building.
Since this is just the start of a series, the ending left me desperate for the next book… which is already out for pre-order in Amazon. And, incidentally, the first book is free for kindle unlimited subscribers. Annette Marie is definitely going up on my list of authors to watch for. One of my favourite scenes were when Piper, in exchanged for an information they needed, ended up in the fight ring. Not to the death, but the fighters will not stop until someone is beaten unconscious. It is a must-read. I wanted to copy that scene here but considering I think it is one of the highlight of the story, I should refrain from doing so.
But where it lacks in heftiness, it more than makes up with the intriguing characters and their nearly impossible undertakings. Meet Piperel Griffiths — half human, half daemon — a haeman. All Piper ever wanted was to become a Consul, a keeper of peace between humans and daemons. Life as Original Post: Life as the daughter of the powerful Head Consul was surprisingly uneventful: Framed for stealing the Stone, she runs for her life with only Lyre and Ash to aid her.
She embarks on a deadly quest to clear her name and quite possibly loose her heart. Chase the Dark definitely tilts the scale more towards contemporary fantasy than paranormal romance But, romance fans will be rewarded with their patience as a delicious love story slowly unravels. WTF even was this book? The plot made no sense and the number of typos or missing words was extremely distracting. Major plot points are missing what even IS the Sahar?
The book also tries to beat you over the head with sex, but in a very obvious, trying-too-hard sort of way - rather than the characters acting sexy, the reader is told repeatedly that WTF even was this book? The book also tries to beat you over the head with sex, but in a very obvious, trying-too-hard sort of way - rather than the characters acting sexy, the reader is told repeatedly that they are sexy but with nothing to substantiate it.
Zwi is obviously just a smaller version of Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, which is cute, but borders on character theft. The writing is too juvenile for teens and just plain insulting for adults. I have no idea why this is so highly rated by other Goodreaders, who are usually spot on.
Aug 07, Emma rated it really liked it Shelves: This series might have to be one of my guilty pleasures: It has all the tropes you might expect, but they are done well. Already got the next one ready to go. Jan 25, Holly rated it really liked it. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.
Started off really not enjoying it. But by the end I was pretty interested. It was so entertaining, deamonesque -funny and action-packed that I found almost impossible to put it down. And for once - drum-roll - it was not only a fresh, hooking read. With its well-developed world-building and its dimensional, intriguing characters Lyre and Ash plucked my heartstrings it has totally restored my faith in YA urban fantasy. Aug 23, Megan rated it really liked it. I enjoyed this story.. I hated the narrator.. She sounded like she had a cold. This was a nice read, a fluent read and it was not boring.
I liked the characters but I had some issues with the book. For me this book was a bit superficial, I just couldn't feel it to my bones. The world building is not really unique but still interesting. After humanity almost wiped itself out during something akin to World War III, the demons from the Underwold dark and Overworld bright revealed themselves and destroyed all mass destruction weapons thus saving Earth, their favorite playground.
Humans now live in a kind of dystopian future, where consul intermediaries try to keep the peace between humans and demons from both worlds. I really liked the backstory; I just wish Annette Marie would have taken the time to describe the world more. It felt slightly as if something was missing. This is mainly because the story is too focused on the action and lacks insight delivered in inner reflections by the main character. From another point of view there is no info-dumping. Instead the information is told in bits and pieces, strewn in almost as an afterthought.
- Cristo y el Nuevo Convenio (Christ and the New Covenant) (Spanish Edition).
- The Instant Survivor: Right Ways to Respond When Things Go Wrong.
- The Whistle Echoes.
- 7 Common Social Media Mistakes and How to Fix Them;
- Chanukah and Other Hebrew Holiday Songs: Early Intermediate to Intermediate Piano Collection.
Even though the premise is interesting I think the book could have profited from a little bit more reflection or inner monologue. The action is fast paced and thus the book never gets boring.

Piper, a Haemon a cross between human and daemon wants to become a Consul just like her father. But then the Sahar, an ancient amulet, is stolen and Piper is suspected of the theft. On the run from both the demon hunters and human prefects she can only rely on the help of two demons: Ash and Lyre to uncover the truth behind the attack on the consulate and the whereabouts of her father and her uncle.
Their journey leads them from attack to attack and fight to fight. From her home consulate to a hospital, an underground fighting club, an abandoned manor in the woods and some few stops in between. I was really drawn into the story but would have wished for a little bit less fighting and more character interaction. All the fighting felt a little bit repetitive interrupted only by some surprising and some not so surprising twists and turns. What I really loved in this story are the characters and the build-up of the romance.
See a Problem?
Despite the blurb, there really is no love triangle. I loved how the author delivered slowly more and more information about the characters. It was like peeling an onion. Everyone has hidden depths and motives. Some are revealed in this book, some secrets remain to come undone in the future. For me this is exactly the reason to give it 4 instead of 3 stars, because every character here has strengths but also weaknesses. Piper is good fighter, headstrong, with her head on her shoulders. But sometimes she acts rashly and impulsively not thinking everything through and it gets her into bad and dangerous situations.
In fact it makes her a really bad consul apprentice as in mediation is clearly not her forte. But also it makes her a good fighter and one who will not so easily give up. She is just the right amount of spunky and fragile and she has humor. I liked her character, a lot. The romance was well developed, leaving room for more in the future. Big time what am I going to do now Annette Marie just punched me in the gut and then sucked me into a vortex of crazy with Chase the Dark.
It's YA and Urban Fantasy. Two of my favorite genres combined. Add in humor, killer writing, boys that make my heart race, a heroine that I actually am rooting for and genuinely like, awesome world-building, and some secrets that are bound to get messy in the next few books and I am hooked. I'm not even sure how to describe thi Uh oh.
I'm not even sure how to describe this book without over-explaining or giving away things that I just loved discovering. Oh my gosh, I was a giggly mess while reading this book. I'm a giggly mess now as I write my convoluted fan-girl review. I love Annette Marie, where oh where has she been all of my reading life.
Shot in the Dark review: pure, undiluted rubbernecking – feeding on human misery
I love the way she writes and her characters and well I am just mad love in love with this series. I'm not even going to bother trying to recount the synopsis or explain what the heck is going on, you can read the synopsis or better yet just go read the book. Piper is off the hook awesome.

I love this girl. I want to be besties with this crazy chick. She's bad ass, strong, and willing to go balls to the wall for her family. She has moments were her age shows, but for the most part I just really liked her. Crap there I go being all giggly again. Can't wipe the grin from my face over the two, yup! Again, where oh where has Annette Marie been all of my reading life.
Crap on crackers, the boys I'm with Piper on this one, I can't completely decide who I like more. Lyre is a smoking hot Incubus. Lyre is the bad boy with a golden heart streaking through all of that bad. Fantastically fantastic and fiercely loyal to Ash, his best friend.
I loved him, and all of his banter with Piper. He made me grin basically any time he was opening his mouth or teasing the crap out of Piper. And then there's Ash. Maybe I do know who I like more 'cuz my heart just kind of jumps whenever I think about Ash and how he is with Piper. Ash isn't a bad boy. But oh so good all at the same time. Quietly powerful, he's a Draconian and one of the last of his family line. He's high on the totem pole of badassery and completely intriguing. Ash just blew me away. The more I got into this book, the more I wanted to know.
And there is this one scene I literally can't even say anything about it, but when you get to that scene between him and Piper It's a good scene. Okay, so I've fan-girled everywhere. The ending isn't completely frustrating but it definitely leaves you desperately clicking for the next book. As the story chillingly unfolds, a psychotic killer dancing as a puppet on a string for the highest office in the country, lets loose a reign of terror in the starry city of San Francisco. Private detective Della Steel is sexy and unpredictable, with a backbone of steel and an affinity with knives.
She's a strong and tech-savvy sleuth who can play as dirty as the big boys. But can she solve the most convoluted and high-profile case of her career, even with the help of handsome psycho analyst Darren Hunt, who fires up her hormones? Will their professional relationship develop into something more exciting, or will the killer mark her first? This fast-paced suspense novel weaves intricate intrigue with a memorable cast of characters, and cleverly reaches its climax with wit, character, and heart.

One person found this helpful. There aren't many books I outright give up on after a couple of chapters. Through her historical investigations into this creature, she has discovered a connection between Barbatos and the Wayne family. Batman is revealed to be part of a prophecy in which he will be treated by five divine metals that will open a door to the Dark Multiverse and allow Barbatos to invade the Multiverse.
It is further revealed that Barbatos first marked Batman when he was sent back in time by Darkseid 's Omega Beams during the events of the Final Crisis storyline. Despite this, Batman proceeds to steal Kendra's sample of Nth metal , which is one of the divine metals. In bringing it to the Batcave to study it, the metal leads him to the journal of Carter Hall, discovered to have been in Wayne Manor the whole time. The journal confirms Batman's suspicions regarding his role in the prophecy.
He is then visited by Daniel Hall , who warns him that the "nightmare has only just begun. The whole Justice League searches for Batman. When Superman finds him, he interrogates him. During this exchange, Batman reveals that he has already been exposed to the foretold divine metals in a process called mantling. It started when he faced the Court of Owls and was exposed to electrum.
He was exposed to dionesium during the events of the Endgame story arc, when he fought to the death with the Joker. The machine that was subsequently used to resurrect him exposed him to promethium. Finally, when he used the machine that allowed him to peer into the Dark Multiverse during the events of the lead-up , he exposed himself to the Nth metal.
In an attempt to escape the last metal, Batman steals Darkseid, who has been reduced to a baby. He aims to use Darkseid's Omega Beams to go back in time again and prevent Barbatos from meeting him. Unfortunately, he is tricked by the Court of Owls and subsequently exposed to the last divine metal: This causes him to exchange places with Barbatos and seven dark versions of himself from the Dark Multiverse. Superman flies to the Fortress of Solitude where he encounters the dark versions of Batman for the first time as they introduce themselves as the Dark Knights.
They all come from the Dark Multiverse—temporary negative realities created by the fears of people from their respective counterpart positive universes—and were recruited by Barbatos with the promise of preventing the end of their worlds. The Batman Who Laughs from Earth, who lost his sanity due to his world's Joker, gathered the six other Dark Multiverse Batmen after they each had altered themselves to gain superhuman abilities.
Superman is overwhelmed as he is spirited away from danger by the Flash and Doctor Fate. Superman meets the people who are left of the resistance, including those who are connected to the Nth metal such as Doctor Fate, Steel , and Plastic Man's egg. Nightwing explains how major cities around the world have fallen to the dark versions of Batman.
Suddenly, Mister Terrific interprets vibrations coming from Plastic Man's egg which indicate the coordinates of four locations that need to be investigated. Green Lantern and Mister Terrific head to the remains of Thanagar. Aquaman and Deathstroke go to Atlantis. Once he arrives, Superman realizes that it was a trap set by the Dark Knights so that they can harness the energy from his cells to power their doomsday device which would unleash their reality into the Multiverse. Kendra, entrusted with the mission given by the Council of Immortals, tries to fire the Anti-Monitor's astral brain in the center of the Multiverse as an attempt to stop the Dark Multiverse but is interrupted by Barbatos, who transforms her into a dark-hawk version of herself named Lady Blackhawk.
Meanwhile, Hal Jordan and Mr. Starro neutralizes Lantern and Terrific and the two are incarcerated. Meanwhile, in the Dark Multiverse, Superman wakes Bruce from an unending nightmare. Barbatos himself is a great dragon that the Forger kept to destroy unstable worlds. Knowing only destruction, Barbartos killed his creator and the Forge began to darken as twisted worlds survived. Convinced that there is still hope, Superman has him and Batman head for the Forge of Worlds.
However, they find the Forge has gone dark, and are confronted by the Dragon of Barbatos—a corrupted Carter Hall. However, they soon learn several Dark Knights have seized control of the Phoenix Cannon, reversing its polarity to make Earth sink further into the Dark Multiverse. In the Rock of Eternity, Kendra regains control of her body after Wonder Woman uses her golden lasso on her, restoring Kendra's memories, although she is still in her dark-hawk form. Terrific, Aquaman, and Deathstroke fight back against the Dark Knights. Terrific convinces Plastic Man to awaken, turning the tide of battle.
However, an unexpected team-up of Batman and the Joker halts this plan, the Justice League defeat the remaining Dark Knights, and Hawkgirl subdues Barbatos. After the Over-Monitor explains that all living things have trace amounts of Tenth Metal, the League proceed to use this power to pull Earth out of the Dark Multiverse it also results in the Source Wall shattering. After the battle, the Over-Monitor chains Barbatos down at the bottom of the Dark Multiverse with Tenth Metal chains, forcing him to watch the World Forge burn bright once more as it creates new worlds.
They speak of their victory against Barbatos, Hawkman recovering on Blackhawk Island and having written about mysterious glimpses of what is to come. Most importantly, they address cracking the Source Wall, which means their Multiverse just got much bigger. This is a matter of utmost importance, but for the night the League decides to enjoy themselves and start preparing the next day.
During the after-dinner party, Bruce, Diana, and Clark talk more about the possible incoming threats now that the Multiverse has been expanded, including a hidden threat they have not yet told anyone else about. Bruce tells his friends not to worry, as he has a plan. On the desk of his study lay a number of blueprints for a Hall of Justice. Initially branded as "Dark Matter", this line introduces new characters and storylines into the mainstream DC Universe.
It was conceived and is overseen by Gaiman himself, but produced by new creative teams. The review aggregator website Comic Book Roundup, gave issue 1 an average score of 8.
