I love picture books, although my kids have outgrown them. And I think the popularity of J. Genuine emotion and character progression. I started reading the series over twenty years ago and re-read many of the earlier volumes multiple times, but never read the final volumes until now. Not much; when you deal with life and death on a daily basis, rejection from agents or editors loses its scariness. But afraid of in life? Losing my mind in the literal sense. I had a concussion a few years ago. Tell us a bit about Corgi Chronicles. How did it come to pass? My family has had corgis for several decades, and my current corgi is Pippin named after the hobbit in Lord of the Rings. Now the story about the book: I have two daughters, and for some reason they love everything sparkly, pink, princessy, or fairy-related. A few years ago they were watching the Tinkerbell movie for the hundredth time, and I started idly typing about Pippin and fairies.

The idea of Pippin, household suburban pet, secretly acting as a steed for fairies, developed into the book. How long did it take you to write Corgi Chronicles? In dog years, human years or fairy years? In human years, I wrote the majority of the book in just a few months, but revisions took longer, and then of course the endless cycle of submissions and rejections. This book is about one such Corgi, Pippin, the faithful mount of the fairy Aliiana, but who spends his days in the care of a loving human family that is totally unaware that their pet has such a big secret.

One day, Pippin and Aliiana are called to help track-down the Ruseol Gem, a powerful source of all good magic that has been stolen by the evil Angarath! And so Aliiana and Pippin are joined by an elf named Nelathen, a sprite called Birgitte, a Gornak the Dwarf, and a mountain lion named Barrol in an adventure around the western United States to recover the stolen Gem and restore the safety of all good magic.

Ridiculously pure, beautiful elves? If it keeps the ridiculous bits and cuts the heartache, well, for kids. This fails a little at that, and those were the only times I thought it dragged.

The second has to do with some of the characters. About half, mostly the talking animals and the villain, are memorable if kiddy. But then the humanoid magical characters all blend together in a sort of generic, heroic stoicism. Is it some misplaced attempt at seriousness?

I wish Madsen would have just bitten the bullet and given these people some personality, even if it was ridiculous and one-note. That said, if you do find yourself looking for books for children, I would recommend this. I enjoyed it far better than most early reader, and can see kids really liking it.
