As I read the introductions I was reminded that they both wrote much if not all of their work under pseudonyms or heteronyms, so I thought I might get one of my serendipitous simultaneous reads reviews out of it.

This Stendahl work seems rather thrown together it appeared first as a newspaper series and disorganized. The same paragraph can contain a caustic remark on provincials, some architectural criticism, a mot on current French political life, and a description of the road and river he passed by.

Plus some remark about Charles X. In fact reading this and a history or Prussia in tandem has sent me in search of a reference work on the family trees of the European royal families so I can have it at hand as I read things like this.
