See a Problem?

Books by Gillian Bradshaw

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am happy to see it's part of a series. Because I'm definitely curious to see where Bradshaw goes with this world and these characters next. Mar 02, Theresa Gilman rated it really liked it. Delightful A lovely fantasy by an under-known author. Not her best, but with some romantic elements and surprises, it kept me eager to find out how everything could possibly resolve well.

I actually bought it a long time ago, being a fan of her work, but hated the cover so much I hardly wanted to open it. Glad I finally did! And it turns out, there's a good reason for the cover. Aug 19, Joy rated it really liked it Shelves: I've always liked Bradshaw as an author of historical fiction and historical fantasy, and this was not a disappointment.

While it isn't going to be one of my favorite books EVER like Hawk of May or The Beacon at Alexandria, it is certainly a delightful fantasy offering about a young magician trying to stop an increasingly-sinister power grab by a local nobleman, complicated by the involvement of an alien race whose poison is also a magic-enhancing drug. There is some romance here, This was fun! There is some romance here, also, but it's not as well-developed as the characters. I'm kind of surprised this self-published series didn't find a commercial publisher--it's better than many out there. Jul 07, Charlie Moses rated it really liked it.

I've read Gillian Bradshaw before - a terrific writer of historical novels, she also enjoys writing fantasy and even a little sf on the side. This book is vol. I bought it on spec just because I've loved most of the novels I've read by Bradshaw and wasn't disappointed. The story is interesting and enjoyable, and progresses nicely through the 2 novels I've read so far.

Classic fantasy elementsbut with a less large-scale feel to the story.

The Devil in the White City Audiobook 1

Jan 26, Judy rated it really liked it. The bad guys did everything but twirl mustaches. The bureaucrats were petty stuffed shirts. And yet, this was fun light reading. It is nice to have ET level friendly aliens in a sword and sorcery novel.

Apr 29, Terri Garey rated it liked it. I'm a big fan of Gillian Bradshaw's historical novels, and had no idea she'd written any fantasy stuff.

I could tell that this was written early in her career, but it was still an enjoyable read. Aug 14, Kate rated it really liked it. This starts out simply but turns into a good book! It's not Bradshaw's usual topic, but if you're a fantasy reader I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Nov 16, Kira rated it liked it Shelves: This was an interesting book but I felt the character development wasn't as good as it could have been and I really wasn't invested in the relationship that developed between the main characters.

Apr 07, Darien rated it really liked it Shelves: Interesting fantasy world, a slightly different take on magic. Mar 21, Lara rated it liked it. I really liked the idea for these books, and they took me in a different direction than I expected. They aren't perfect, but I did read all of them, so I guess that tells you something! This book seemed more straight forward than others in the same series. It is the third one but it transitioned to new main characters. I enjoyed seeing new people and the different viewpoint but there was something missing. I enjoyed the read and kept wanting to read more but I felt disappointed with the story as a whole. Mar 07, Theresa Gilman rated it really liked it. Better than the second I enjoyed learning more about the Ophidians, though it was too bad that Estevan and Marin were relegated to the background. Good characters as always.

A Soupçon of Poison

Jul 31, Kat rated it really liked it Shelves: Of course I was hoping for more excellent Marin and Duke Estevan interactions, but instead we leap forward in time and move focus to a new main character, the Scholar Jaketta. Since saying, "I don't like this book because it doesn't have the characters I wanted! The action involves the same excellent combination of politics, heroics, sneakiness, magic and cleverness laid out in the previous books, and was a bunch of fun.

It's also a super-quick read, and as well-written and engaging as Bradshaw always is.

Unfortunately, the main characters other than one recurring character who has appeared in all three books so far lacked the charisma of the leads in the previous books, and the romance was flat-out unbelievable. At no point did I buy that the male lead had any qualities that would make a lady fall for him, mainly because he's never shown doing anything other than groaning, bitching, and generally being a jealous a-hole. It makes the female lead, unfortunately, come off as a bit of a doormat, since she puts up with his crap and does her best to conciliate him at all times.

So that really didn't work for me. Still, even sub-par Bradshaw still makes for a fine, entertaining read, and I will happily move on to the next and final book.
