LEAD WITH AUTHENTICITY Discover and Develop Your Own Leadership Style

Does this mean every authentic leader has to be the same? Be Yourself No, definitely not. There are all kinds of leaders, each person has their own style and voice. For example, you may be very passionate and demonstrative in sharing your purpose while others will show this through dedication and hard work. We all have many different values as leaders. Or we may have a unique sense of purpose for our leadership that is unlike other leaders.

What can you do to be a more authentic leader? He and his team interviewed leaders between the ages of 23 and 93 to find out how they were becoming authentic leaders. While many of them were very different, there were some similar things they did to be uniquely themselves. Based on their study findings and a few of my own thoughts on authentic leadership, here are a few tools and tips on how you can bring your most authentic self forward in your leadership journey.

What if you were applying for a promotion at work and I asked you to tell me about something that happened to you that helped define who you are today — what would you tell me? Define your values Use your personal values to guide your actions and decisions. Have you ever written down your values? If you want to be authentic, a truly outstanding human being, you need to be absolutely clear about the values that make up your own personal philosophy.

If someone really knew you, how would they describe you in a few words? What is your purpose? What are you here to achieve? This took me on many personal and spontaneous detours in my life. I realize now that my quest for continuous learning was very passionate and that I was eager to share what I learned with others. However, something to consider is this: Vulnerability means you are open to share your values and ask others to share theirs too. Being able to get below the surface of the ways in which people have risen to positions of authority within their organization can be truly eye-opening in helping them to realize what traits and passions they have that make them a strong leader.

This pursuit of self-awareness and understanding also helps individuals to be more authentic in their leadership style. This helps in the development of trust, which is itself a key element of developing strong and respectful teams.

However, it is this definition of purpose that can arguably provide the greatest value to those who take part in this process, as it can boost confidence in themselves that will translate into more effective and forthright decision-making. The chapters are steps or building blocks that will give you information on where you stand, and what you still need to work on in terms of the eleven steps of the lead with authenticity model.

All eleven steps come together in a unique manner to help you create your own leadership style. The process of discovering your unique combination of these steps — and becoming aware of your strengths and limitations with each step — is the essence of this book.

I also liked the fact that Gary Ostwald acknowledges that leadership is a choice one makes signifying commitment Lead with Authenticity offers sound practical advice from a strong theoretical foundation and challenges the heart, not just the mind.

Ostwald provides practical tools, honest vignettes, and striking imagery. He is persuasive without being preachy. His book gives the reader a clear illumination on the bridge between good self-management and great team management. Lead with Authenticity has been so relevant and practical for me.
