This amazing year was outside the usual order of things, exceptional in quite contradictory ways - abundantly fertile and yet at the same time sickly and deadly It was very rare for just one person to die in a house, usually, husband, wife, children and servants all went the same way, the way of death.

And I, Brother John Clyn of the Friars Minor in Kilkenny, have written in this book the notable events which befell in my time, which I saw myself or have learned from men worthy of belief. So that notable deeds should not perish with time, and be lost from the memory of future generations, I, seeing these many ills, and that the whole world encompassed by evil, waiting among the dead for death to come, have committed to writing what I have truly heard and examined; and so that the writing does not perish with the writer, or the work fail with the workman, I leave parchment for continuing the work, in case anyone should still be alive in the future and any son of Adam can escape this pestilence and continue the work thus begun.

Nor was the end of it. It came back in , , , , , and continued into the fifteenth century. Death rates in the later epidemics may have been lower than the Black Death, but the sources reveal a new horror:. In a general mortality oppressed the people. In AD there was a mortality of men, especially adolescents and boys, and as a result it was commonly called the pestilence of boys. Chronicle of Louth Park Abbey. In there was a second pestilence within England, which was called the mortality of children.

Several people of high birth and a great number of children died. In there was a third pestilence in England and in several other countries. It was great beyond measure, lasted a long time and was particularly fatal to children. In the fourth pestilence began in England In the following year, a large number of Londoners from among the wealthier and more eminent citizens died in the pestilence. In the fourth pestilence reached York and was particularly fatal to children. In a great plague ravaged the country.

It especially attacked adolescents and boys, who died in incredible numbers in towns and villages everywhere. The message is clear: Modern research shows that it was entirely possible for the plague to have become both age and gender specific by the s, with profound consequences for the reproductive cycle of the population.

By the s, the population of England had been halved and it was not recovering. The plague returned in a series of periodic local and national epidemics. The plague only finally stopped at the end of the Seventeenth century. This page is best viewed in an up-to-date web browser with style sheets CSS enabled.

Jan 08, Paullei Mumme rated it really liked it Shelves: I've patiently awaited the arrival of Zoe Sharp's tenth book in the Charlie Fox series and since I had pre-ordered it, it was delivered this morning. I couldn't stop reading until I finished and as has been the case with all of books in the series, I was not disappointed - well, not until the very end.

The disappoint had nothing to do with the story, characters, or writing style. My disappointment is simply I wanted more, I expected more. I felt like I had taken a great journey but instead of be I've patiently awaited the arrival of Zoe Sharp's tenth book in the Charlie Fox series and since I had pre-ordered it, it was delivered this morning.

I felt like I had taken a great journey but instead of being delivered to the front steps on home at the end I was left off a blocks away. Close enough to be considered home, but not quite delivering me all the way there. You will not be disappointed at all with this book, but I imagine you will be like me and wanting more.

That is the gift and the curse of a talented author, especially in a series such as Charlie Fox. Sharp given me the "more" that I thought should have been in the book, I may have felt she started something but didn't finish it. The ending was appropriate and I'm am certainly anticipating the next installment of Charlie Fox. Where will story line of these characters take us next? Can Charlie, Sean, and Parker ever have a life with some glimmer of happiness?

Thank you Zoe Sharp for giving life to Charlie Fox and company. May 26, Harry rated it it was amazing Shelves: Emperically speaking, in taking a look at the genre books I'm reading and have read, it appears that I prefer male authors. The hero of my "read" list is male; usually a loner of some type Lee Child ; in the business of violence and justice of a varied sort Barry Eisler ; there is a mix of flawed heroes Jo Nesbo and heroes who have it pretty much together Craig Johnson. Judgment calls on my preferences I'll leave to others And yes, I've read lots of female authors who write in this genre prior to coming to GR.

But, I find it rare when a female author hits my sweet spot, as described above. I don't know why that is. It is what it is, I suppose. Zoe Sharp is one of the few exceptions to my expectations Sharp, you really get the best of both worlds.

Other Books in This Series

Not to mention that the author herself looks pretty sharp. I admit, reading the reviews I was skeptical as to whether or not I'd like her books for the simple reason that I'm interested in a particular type of hero principled but tempted by physical violence, alone in the world by choice but always tempted to abandon this lifestyle. Female main characters usually do not fit this model if my previous reads are any indication. And so I considered that books written from the viewpoint of Charlie Fox, a female protagonist, might or might not interest me.

Having said that, the character of Sean Meyer did interest me. Sharp did a nice job of incorporating my particular interest, not just in the character of Sean Meyer, but also in the female protagonist. Charlie Fox is in the business of security, protection, and self-defense. That too went a long way into my choosing to read this series. Constantly weighing her principles against Sean Meyer vs. As with all series books, read them in order!

And if you've read this review of Charlie Fox than you've read them all. Sharp remains consistent in terms of interesting plots, depth of character to warrant a blanket review of the entire series. Apr 04, John Hancock rated it it was amazing. Another notch in the capable hands of Charlie Fox.

It becomes the rock upon which I rest all my hopes of some delicious late nights of reading. Consistent in delivering vein-chilling suspense, yet never predictable.

About the Series

Each new book launches out with a mind of its own, a personal mission to carve out a new territory of memorable locales. In this adventure and remember, not all adventures are fun, nor safe , Sharp explores what happens when bodyguards are act Another notch in the capable hands of Charlie Fox. In this adventure and remember, not all adventures are fun, nor safe , Sharp explores what happens when bodyguards are actually stripped naked of things they usually rely on to do their jobs. Not just weapons, devices or technology -- but the sheer solitary danger of losing trust, cooperation and reliable human intel.

And in that sense, metaphorically naked Charlie must rely on her own wits, her ingenuity, her ability to assess risks and benefits. At the time when she must be the most hardened and effective, she finds herself the most vulnerable and at the mercy of her circumstances.

What Sharp excels at is the ability to put you in the action, and to make you associate with Charlie, to hold your breath while she takes fantastic chances and to feel her outrage, her dismay at injustice and her resolve to survive. Don't just read this book. Read everything Sharp writes. I guarantee you will be neither bored nor disappointed.

Princess Diana: What happened on the night of her death?

You might, however, need a defibrillator. Charlie has had so many awful, awful things happen to her that she deserves some happiness and she had that with Sean. It is bad enough that he doesn't remember their relationship but they could have worked back to that point but to have Sean change his fundamental character to break that connection made me enjoy this boo As action packed and entertaining as always I just HATE what is happening with Sean.

It is bad enough that he doesn't remember their relationship but they could have worked back to that point but to have Sean change his fundamental character to break that connection made me enjoy this book less that previous instalments and turned a 4 star book into a 3 star for me. As much as she's gone through, it's amazing how she's still walking around, instead of lying curled up in the closet somewhere. This book is like a master class in thriller writing.

Zoe Sharp makes it all look effortless-- ending each chapter with a twist that makes you keep reading, and building everything on character and personal relationships that engage the reader completely. Feb 26, Una Tiers rated it it was ok. Can you have too much conflict? Apr 25, Donna rated it liked it Shelves: This book is the tenth novel in the Charlie Fox series by Zoe Sharp. I haven't read any of the others in this series. This leads me to recommend the following: DO NOT jump in willy nilly and expect to get the back story on relationships, past relationships and who shot who and who was shot where.

Now with that little disclaimer, I still liked this book. I liked the female MC.
