When you work with a friend, your relationship will change. But how it changes - for better or worse - is up to you.
Integrity - This is the key characteristic you should look for when assessing a friend as a potential partner. I don't care how close you are - if the person lacks integrity, bringing them onboard is simply too risky. Strong Work Ethic - Starting a business is one of the most stressful and challenging experiences a person can undertake.
Therefore, any friends you consider must have a serious work ethic. One of the biggest riffs I see between business partners is one person feeling like they are handling all the work. It's imperative you set expectations for roles upfront. Persistence - With a large percentage of startup ending in failure, you need someone by your side that will remain persistent and dedicated through the challenging times. Big Ego - Your friends' big ego might be amusing when you're out at happy hour, but it will lead to serious problems in business. You need someone who is open to learning what he doesn't know, not someone who assumes they already have all the answers.
First-year university is hard – and that’s okay
Overly Passionate - Passion, without diligence and a carefully researched plan, can lead to disaster. A little passion is good, but only when it is matched with a grounded, realistic view on the situation at hand. The Talker- If your friend is all talk and no action, this can be very disruptive and unproductive in a business environment. Ask them to be bold. Explain that homesickness is normal, but the way to combat it is to be as present as possible — to soak up all that university has to offer. Most importantly, tell them that things will change quickly over the first few weeks and months.
Some students in our study loved university right away, but the majority said it took them a long time to get into a groove. Encourage your child to be patient and diligent.
About Karyn Buxman
It will come, but not without effort. The key for professors is to try to empathize with the challenging shift from cozy high-school classroom to anonymous lecture hall. We learned from our participants that professors are intimidating, no matter how amusing and stylish they are. Professors need to set up non-threatening ways to help students find their academic stride: Students told us their favourite professors were the ones clearly smitten with what they were teaching — not those just going through the motions in a monotone drone.
And the key for students is to not beat yourselves up over any perceived failures. Find friends who do the things you like to do. Get involved clubs, sports teams, the gym, frosh week, pasta night with roomies. Sit in the front to avoid distraction and ensure the professor knows your face.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
Do the readings as they come up, not the night before the exam. And chill with friends more than you party. In the end, the most significant lesson we learned from our participants was that balance is everything. University is an experience and we learned that students do best when they embrace that experience by staying open, allowing possibilities to percolate, and seeing themselves not just for who they are, but for who they might be.
