There were occasions where I felt that Murray spoke against himself. The remedy, then, is to give one's self up entirely to God, to let God and "His" power live through the believer. On the other hand, Murray seemed to suggest that the Christian is to a learn this b have unfailing trust in God and 3 abide in Christ. None of these, however, are trivial or easy to do. In other words, Murray seems to replace one burden with another without even knowing it. Absolute Surrender is a must-read classic for any Christian.

Even though this short book was first published in , it really is timeless. Andrew Murray discusses the need for us to surrender ourselves to the will of God and hold nothing back. He does a wonderful character study of Peter, looking at the amazing transformation from the man who denied Jesus 3 times, to the man who would become the rock the church was built on. Murray really makes the case of the struggling Christian in Roman Absolute Surrender is a must-read classic for any Christian. Murray really makes the case of the struggling Christian in Romans 7 personal. Through these and other essays, he spotlights some of the key frustrations for many Christians, and what is ultimately the root cause.

It is a book that is both convicting as it looks at our repeated failures to "be ye perfect even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect", but also empowering as it reminds us that "the things which are impossible with men are possible with God". And in fact, our continued efforts to do on our own what is only possible for God is at the root of our struggles. Hence, the need for absolute surrender. Sep 15, Kristin Spencer rated it it was amazing. I really think that every Christian should read this book.

Instead of telling you why you should read this book, here is a quote that blew my mind. As long as you have your own wisdom and thoughts and strength, you cannot fully trust God. But when God breaks you down, when everything begins to grow dim before eyes and you see that you understand nothing, then God is near. If you will wait upon God, He will become all you need. As This book is amazing. As long as we are something, God cannot be all, and His omnipotence cannot do its full work.

That is the beginning of faith -- utter despair of self and dependence on God alone. Seriously, that is just one awesome quote of many. You can currently find it free on Kindle. Sep 23, Katy Sammons rated it liked it. This book is short, easy to read, and encouraging. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Peter. However, I gave it three stars because Murray makes living the Christian life sound so easy--that you can do this thing with little sin if you just have enough faith and spend enough time with the Lord.

This can be misleading, especially to new Christians who have yet to encounter any real trials. My thinking has been heavily influenced by John Newton, and I believe it is always better to err on the sid This book is short, easy to read, and encouraging. My thinking has been heavily influenced by John Newton, and I believe it is always better to err on the side of grace rather than to potentially encourage legalism.

This is definitely NOT what Murray intends, but I think it could very easily be the take away for some readers. Sep 25, Morena Caleb rated it it was amazing. I recieved the baptism of the Holy Ghost 34 years ago without ever reading the book. Just the cover and title was sufficient to convert me. Always praying that same prayer through the years; Lord, I surrender all. I finally decided to order the book and this time I started reading it.

I am almost to the end. How much pain could I have saved myself if I had read it when it was first given to me. Awesome book that all who seek a relationship with God should read. There is so much joy and peace whe I recieved the baptism of the Holy Ghost 34 years ago without ever reading the book. There is so much joy and peace when you have a clear conscience and a daily walk with the divine master. Dec 01, Jonathan Kirby rated it it was amazing. Yes, God demands absolute surrender. We will never understand God and Christ till we surrender ourselves absolutely, totally, fully to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Christian books are a dime a dozen, but given enough time, a special few rise to the top of the heap.

Absolute Surrender will remain one of the most encouraging and compelling books for a believer. It's bold without being harsh, like a grandfather's admonition. All thoughts and opinions are my own. There are some aspects of the thought process of the writer that are a bit strange to me--his striking use of the word shunted, for example, is remarkable--but overall this is an author who tends to be very direct and straightforward. In reading a book by this author, this book in particular, one is not going to get a lot of dancing around the point, but rather one is going to get a direct and fierce defense of the author's beliefs, and one that is going to be tough-minded.

This book, it should be stated without any ambiguity, is certainly tough-minded, and the author makes plain over and over again how insufficient our own efforts are in reaching any standards of righteousness as well as any power. Although the book was written before the contemporary mania for ragamuffin gospels [2], the book is a strong refutation of that concept through a fierce treatment of the carnality of many professed Christians.

The author, in thirteen chapters, manages to cover about pages or so of text. Included in that are many discussions of the Holy Spirit and its role for believers, of our need to be filled and changed by it and separated to it. The author makes it plain that a genuine believer needs to make a transition and a journey through divine assistance from carnal to spiritual and that requires a great deal of conviction and confession of our sins.

The author makes use of Peter's repentance as a way of demonstrating how this process works, and gives quite a few stories about his own life and background and the institutions of his time. Over and over again the author makes it plain that our attempts at making efforts are without efficacy in terms of developing godly love and character in our lives. This is done without any sort of ambiguity whatsoever--whether a reader appreciates the author's direct approach or not, the author is not the sort of man to mince words or disguise his beliefs, but rather is one to lay out his beliefs openly before the reader, come what may.

One of the notable insights this book brings to the table, and it is not a new insight but is certainly a very relevant one, is that a large part of the reason for the failure of Christians to make a more positive influence on the world is because of a lack of maturity and growth. All too often people profess Christianity and there is little recognition of the full extent of our self-will and departure from God, nor any recognition of the seriousness of the commitment that we have made and the total lack of ability we have of following God's commandments without His power in us.

This book is a salutary reminder of the fallen and frail nature of mankind and our need for greater devotion and surrender to God. Whether or not this message is appealing to our generation, it is certainly a message that is relevant to our issues as believers in the present time, and so this book remains worthy even if--or because--it cuts against the culture of our day and time. This book was right between a 3 and 4 star for me. It was pretty enjoyable to read, and it had moments where it really stirred me to live more wholly for and dependent upon God and his Spirit.

But overall, it sometimes felt like he rambled, it wasn't well organized, and it wasn't Murray's best by any means. The main thrust of the book was that we cannot live pleasing to God in ministry unless we are totally dependent upon the Holy Spirit. This emphasis came up over and over, and rightly so.

Howev This book was right between a 3 and 4 star for me. However, it did provide a handful of great quotes. Here are some from the book: I have told you to go to the God of omnipotence and the God of the Word" How often I have tried to do that, and made a foo of myself! You cannot stir up faith fro the depths of your heart. Leave your heart, and look into the face of Christ. Listen to what He tells you about how He will keep you. Look up into the face of your loving Father, and take tie every day with Him" I wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, but I enjoy works like this from Murray and Bounds, and they definitely help stir one up in their faith.

Nov 19, Tom D rated it really liked it. The author's prose speak right to you. He literally asks questions of the readers and implores them to become spiritual. I often use the title to explain part of my theology: What I didn't like: The Keswick theology permeates this book and is promoted in this book heavily. This theology has an incorrect view of sanctification that requires a "second blessing" of being filled with the Holy Spirit APART from initial justification. This is not Scriptural.

The author mentions this often. However, I was able to ignore this and found the overarching theme see above of absolute surrender to be edifying and enjoyable. Aug 02, Meichunyu rated it it was amazing. Andrew Murray is such an anointed author.

Ch. 18 Total Brokenness Leading to Absolute Surrender - Astonishing Grace Story

I was literally in tears when I first read about Peter's repentance in chapter 4. Classic and passionate writing like this brought me to my knees. Made me realise we can be very earnest, devoted, godly believer, in whom the power of the flesh is still fairly strong. Andrew reminded me how good God has been to me all these years and how my life is a proof of what the omnipotent God can do. May 03, Tom rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: ALL Followers of Christ.

This was a good book that I will revisit. It was short, concise and used much scripture. Scripture was quite familiar, but assembled in a way that provides a vision to get to surrender.

"THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS LOVE."

Below is a paraphrase of my largest take away, rooted in John 15, a passage in which every believer should be rooted: The branches need to be pruned and must be connected to the Vine. The Vine provides all of the nutrients and everything neces This was a good book that I will revisit. The Vine provides all of the nutrients and everything necessary for healthy, delicious apples, the branch only need receive. Pruned branches receive the most and produce the best and lasting fruit. I am trying to be a little more judicious in giving out 5 stars, but I am now moved to make the change and place this on my Required Reading shelf.

Trivia About Absolute Surrender. No trivia or quizzes yet. The Almighty Spirit of God was enabling Him to do it. And when you do yield yourself in absolute surrender, let it be in the faith that God does now accept of it. That is the great point, and that is what we so often miss You may not feel it When God has begun the work of absolute surrender in you, and when God has accepted your surrender, then God holds Himself bound to care for it and to keep it.

Will you believe that? In this matter of surrender there are two: God and I-- I a worm, God the everlasting and omnipotent Jehovah. Worm, will you be afraid to trust yourself to this mighty God now? Do you not believe that He can keep you continually, day by day, and moment by moment?

Absolute Surrender by Andrew Murray

Because you have not trusted God for it What did he say he believed to be the secret of his happiness, and of all the blessing which God had given him? The one was that he had been enabled by grace to maintain a good conscience before God day by day; the other was, that he was a lover of God's Word. Such a life has two sides-- on the one side, absolute surrender to work what God wants you to do; on the other side, to let God work what He wants to do.
