The story is not always imaginatively plotted, perhaps because so much else was going on that the author could only juggle so many balls in the air. Buffalito Destiny is a great deal of fun even with a few plot glitches.

Jun 22, Jonathan Scotese rated it it was ok Shelves: The writing style reminded me of Robert Asprin. This is as far from hard sci-fi as you can get. It is filled with various psychic powers, biological process that make no sense, and of course super technology. The politics I perceived rubbed me the wrong way. An "environmentalist" group is cast as the primary antagonist. Their behavior makes no sense other than as fanatical morons to fill the antagonist role so the plot could move forward. Their hypocritical behavior was human supremacist and had The writing style reminded me of Robert Asprin.
Their hypocritical behavior was human supremacist and had nothing to do with environmentalism. The fact that the author decided to call them radical environmentalists bothered me. If you like Robert Asprin and want to read something he might write if he wrote sci-fi, this is for you. There aren't as many puns, but it had the same feel.
Jun 25, Josh Gentry added it Shelves: Starts of quite fun, but I have the audio book, and I struggle with that format, so I haven't finished. Will give it another go on the way home tonight. Turns out audio books just don't work for me. My not finishing the book has nothing to do with the book itself. Great plotting, engaging elements. But frustratingly underwritten in parts, with flat characters. I loved the buffalitos and definitely wanted to know what happened in the end. So it claws its way up to three stars. Jul 07, Jenine rated it it was ok. The buffalitos are a wonderful invention.
The plotting is great but the characters are just barely there.

Having created a multi-billion dollar empire from leasing highly-versatile utility buffalitos, Conroy decides to do a good turn for Mother Earth by volunteering his herd's services in cleaning up the world's worst toxic dump site.
But there are hostile, opposing forces at work: It's up to Conroy and his unique abilities with psychology to save himself, the buffalitos, and the planet. As in the short stories, the novel is made even more enjoyable with numerous descriptions of fabulous, mouth-watering gourmet dishes.
This is book one in a series that so far has two novels and a collection of short stories. Lawrence Schoen creates a cast of diverse characters, each with their own issues, peculiarities, and agendas. With consummate skill he weaves them together into a rollicking tale that finishes with all loose ends tied up and all characters accounted for.
In the process the reader enjoys a humorous science fiction adventure on par with Robert Asprin's Phule's Company books. And the books only get better!

An escape from the reality that drains our energy on a daily basis. An engaging and yet light fare that allows for time to take care of the mundane tasks as well.
Good for all interests. The action was paced well, for the most part, and the characters well developed and entertaining. Schoen has a gift for storytelling!
This was a fun read, and made you think. Jan 01, Robert J. A first rate romp This a light airy entertainment. A whole delightful universe with diverse aliens. It reminds me is Shakespeare's comedies. The hero, a talented rogue with a really neat pet overcomes impossible odds, earns the eternal hatred of two species, a spaceship and gets closer to the girl.
