Forging a living from the unforgiving wilderness that was to be the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, they are hard put to fend off their unwelcome aggressors. As the settlers chafe at the increasingly restrictive and invasive laws and taxes of the British crown, it becomes all too clear that an unconditional separation of states must come, empowering the settlers with independence. Acting as unrestrained agents of the British government, bands of Indians from multiple tribes depredate the frontier settlements. The English encourage this to force the settlers to feel vulnerable and helpless hoping it fosters a sense of dependence on crown protection.
Fortunately for the settlers, they see through the ploy and respond as all frontier settlers eventually would. This book, like the first, historically falls just prior to the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Jedidiah is requested to form a group of clandestine frontier rangers to avenge and protect the American settlers against the tyrannical attacks by the British forces and their Indian allies.
