And may he who is above all call you by name to run free in his endless fields. As someone who has loved and lost dogs, I took great comfort in those words. Definitely need more with these characters! I loved them all! Especially Orphan, the cat, and Ace, the husky!

Dec 22, Hirondelle rated it liked it Shelves: I should have loved this. Loved some of of Jill Thompsons other works, and come on psychic dog detectives gang, its precisely my cup of tea. In practice, no not quite. I got two main hangups with this. Even secondary characters good dogs - and the first story, chapter of this, hit a lot of my triggers and in a bad felt manipulative to me way. The second hangup is slightly more objective but a little more difficult to explain - this is so comics-style, so american-style.
For example the last line and cliffhangerish endings the new characters and external motivations and small storylines always getting introduced. View all 14 comments. Jan 31, Skye Kilaen rated it it was amazing Shelves: After this first encounter with the supernatural, the six friends become a sort of paranormal detective group under loose supervision by the Wise Dogs.
They battle witches and investigate disappearances tied to spooky dark magic and evil forces. They make terrible, soul-crushing mistakes, but they also save lives. Jan 11, Annye rated it it was amazing Shelves: I started reading Beasts of Burden: There's a non-human protagonist square and this is a story about talking dogs - it was probably that one!
The horror in Beasts of Burden is slow to develop. For the first few issues it's not present at all - those stories are purely for character and world-build I started reading Beasts of Burden: For the first few issues it's not present at all - those stories are purely for character and world-building. But the creepy builds and builds, and by about the halfway point, Beasts of Burden is definitely a spooky book. There is one panel in particular that I can't seem to shake because of how much it moved me with its haunting and evocative creepiness. It's the one of the mother. Trust me, if you read this book you will know what I'm talking about, and I'm willing to bet it will stick in your head too.
I am not a horror fan, especially on a late cold quiet night when it comes up on me in surprise. But the horror in Beasts of Burden is tempered with light-hearted characters and delicate artwork. For me, this book ended up being more moving and moody than scary, which was a great relief. Other than the creepiness, I absolutely adored Beasts of Burden. The artwork blew me away. The lines are wonderful particularly the expressions , but the colors steal the show. Thompson's spectacular watercolors she won an Eisner for Wonder Woman: The True Amazon are again on display, and add yet another level of moody depth.
The characters are all fun and feel quite special, and the world builds slowly but surely into quite an interesting fantasy setting. Even if you're not a fan of horror, I'd highly recommend Beasts of Burden for the story, the characters, and most of all the stupendous artwork. Jul 23, Chris rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is about a group of dogs that protect a neighborhood from supernatural critters.
It's like Merlin as a dog, really. Honesty, if you have pets - dogs or cats, because cats help - you should read this. It has everything that you want in a good book, just using animals to tell the story. It is not for children, for at times it is quite dark. But it is wonderful. This book was recommended to me by a friend and I'd like to start by thanking him. Beasts of Burden was totally worth it and I'd keep on reading if only there was more of it in my shelves.
Now to speak of the book itself, I'll start by saying this isn't your everyday children's fable, far from it, and for me that's the first good thing about it. To give you a short and as unspoiling as possible description of Bea This book was recommended to me by a friend and I'd like to start by thanking him. To give you a short and as unspoiling as possible description of Beasts of Burden, it's about a group of dogs and one cat that live on Burden Hill, talk to each other like regular friends and before long are running from and fighting the likes of witches, zombies and other typical horror stories' creatures.
And yes, there are wise magical dogs and the witches have black cat familiars.
While you follow them on these adventures, the author takes you on a tour about friendship, heroism and self-preservation, racism, responsibility and dealing with consequences and suffering. Of course, these themes are only slightly explored in so little time, but you can feel the potential of this set-up.
Then there are details that make the reading experience so much better: The illustration makes the story work, but more than that, sometimes you just feel like checking the artwork for itself, some pages are literally out of this world. Even the lettering here was perfectly adapted to the context and the drawing. All in all an awesome book, recommended for all who don't mind talking cats and dogs of fun and games. Just don't let young children read it before bedtime or you might be in for a rough night.
Give it to them the next day and be sure to check it out yourself beforehand, you won't regret it! Oct 08, Matti Karjalainen rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Mestariteosta kelpaa suositella kaikille. Jul 06, Josh rated it liked it. A pretty quick read. Not amazing, but enjoyable. A group of dogs and one cat solve supernatural mysteries in their neighborhood. It's like Scooby-Doo, but with all animals and a bit more graphic.
Zombie dogs, ghost animals, cannibalistic frogs, etc.

I enjoyed this one, but there is nothing earth-shattering here. Jun 24, Sierra rated it it was amazing. My new favorite series! It starts off simple, the gang just getting rid of a ghost dog in jacks new dog house. But by the end of it, I found myself cheering for these little guys, excited to see what they could pull off next! The art is gorgeous. Un fumetto davvero piacevole e interessante! La storia parla di un gruppo di animali a Burden Hill. Rex resta molto sullo sfondo, anche se quando se ne parla viene dipinto come una sorta di miles glouriosus.

Mar 03, Darth rated it it was amazing. I ugly cried to two of the vignettes in this comic Boy and His Dog and Lost. Seriously though, I had to stop reading for ten minutes after a Boy and His Dog cuz goddamn. Maybe it's because I like animals way, way more than people, but I absolutely loved this comic. The art was fantastic and the writing even better. It's not often a writer can portray suburban animals without that dopey "American" feel.
What was so interesting about this comic was the supernatural twist strewn through I ugly cried to two of the vignettes in this comic Boy and His Dog and Lost. What was so interesting about this comic was the supernatural twist strewn throughout. They're like doggy and kitty Ghost Busters.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for that shit. I will most definitely be reading more by this author. Not a big fan of the stories. Loved the characters, specially the cats and the raccoon, and the artwork But the stories felt kinda of too much of the same. I wish it was just a single and long story so I could get more of the mysteries from the city and the animals. Oh and in case ur not sure if ur gonna like it, just read the last comic they've published.
It's super short and does the service of showing if ur gonna enjoy the other stories or not. Jun 29, Antonia rated it really liked it. Oct 10, Joanna rated it liked it. The art was so amazing--I liked the weird and fantastic stories, but the paintings really took the cake. Watercolor is such a great and versatile medium! Aug 03, Terence rated it liked it Recommended to Terence by: The artwork is good a Beasts of Burden: The artwork is good and not excessively gory when bad things happen.
Some of the stories will make you laugh, the others will have you crying because they are so moving. The personification of the dogs and cats helps you to relate to them, and the fact that they're like our own pets makes you fall in love with them within the first few pages. I wish I could say more about this, but you really need to read it yourself to understand. If you love horror and the paranormal, this is for you.
If you love pets and their spazzy quirks, this is for you. If you like drama in personal relationships, this is for you. If you like a good mystery, this is for you. So get it already! Here is the Eisner winning duo with their award winning series Beasts of Burden in a complete deluxe edition that is wonderfully priced by Dark Horse. What could go wrong? Every page is filled with some of the most detailed water color art styles I have ever seen in comics.
This edition has everything that Jill Thompson and Evan Dorkin made in this series which was originally scattered about and printed in 4 different Dark Horse horror anthologies and a short 4 or 5 single issue run from Dark Horse as well. This made it very difficult to collect all the material but now the wait is over.
The content, although mainly horror, could really appeal to people of all ages. There is nothing grotesque or offensive about the series and it has just the write amount of blood to comedy ratio. There is a lot of dark humor in the series. I would have loved this when I was a kid, and being an adult now I still find it wonderfully entertaining.
Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites HC :: Profile :: Dark Horse Comics
This deluxe edition is a must have for every collection of horror fans, Dark Horse fans, or fans of good critically acclaimed comics. One person found this helpful. You might read the description and think this is innocent and cute tales about solving paranormal mysteries Scooby-Doo-esque is what I had in mind. It definitely has that but can be much darker at times; things don't always wrap up neatly with the bad guys caught and the good guys celebrating a hard-won victory.
Personally, I tend to enjoy stories like that because they're more real. However, I am also a person with a high sensitivity to animals dying. There were definitely some points where I needed to put the book down because I couldn't read through the tears.
Despite that, I still really enjoyed the characters and stories. Had this grown into a consistent series, I would definitely be a monthly subscriber. Not for the faint of heart, this colourful book is engaging, well-written, and suspenseful. However, it does have mature themes that belie the cutesy animal characters.
If you're an animal lover, beware, because there is some semi-graphic animal abuse; the authors don't sugar-coat things. Personally I like that. This series is morbid and doesn't pull punches, but balances its darker themes with some humour and good-natured fun. One last word of warning: Many of them are poignant. I, at least, was surprised by how deeply some of plots affected me. I definitely recommend this series. The American Graphic Novel at its Finest. Dorkin has been one of my favorite comic book humorists for many years now; why this wonderful series hasn't been optioned for a film series is a mystery to me.
I read my share of books and comics, but frankly, I was stunned by how powerful this mini-series was.

I've sinced picked up the graphic novel, which contains the earlier shorts, and -- wow -- this has gone to my top ten all-time great list. In part, it's because the characters are well-delineated, likeable and real, as if the author can genuinely read the thoughts, barks and meows of our favorite domestic animals.
In addition, their interactions are hilarious, yet believable, and grounded in a very stark sense of earthiness. This may be a funny book thought not in a corny, juvenile kind of way , but it deals very seriously with death, transmigration, loss, abandonment and cruelty, as well as courage, hope and compassion.
Some of these stories will leave you speechless, and that's not an easy thing to accomplish in a day and age of media overload. It has the heart and soul of those books and films, which is what makes it so endearing. I also can't say enough about the artwork. It's got a storybook quality that's not commonly seen in comics unfortunately, because it's so effective , elegiac and earthy which I've said before in regards to the storytelling , a perfect rendering of these characters and their fascinating world, which is both realistic and overrun with bizarre and malevolent entities.
Seriously, do yourself a favor and grab this book! This is going to be one of those that's recognized years later as one of the greats. Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson, take a bow! You guys have created a masterpiece! Now, can you keep it going?
