Opera seria was the most prestigious form of Italian opera, until Christoph Willibald Gluck reacted against its artificiality with his operas in the s. The first third of the 19th century saw the point of the bel canto style, with Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti. It also saw the advent of Grand Opera typified by the works of Auber and Meyerbeer, the mid-to-late 19th century was a golden age of opera, led and dominated by Richard Wagner in Germany and Giuseppe Verdi in Italy.
The popularity of opera continued through the era in Italy and contemporary French opera through to Giacomo Puccini.

During the 19th century, parallel operatic traditions emerged in central and eastern Europe, the 20th century saw many experiments with modern styles, such as atonality and serialism, Neoclassicism, and Minimalism. With the rise of recording technology, singers such as Enrico Caruso, since the invention of radio and television, operas were also performed on these mediums. Beginning in , a number of opera houses began to present live high-definition video transmissions of their performances in cinemas all over the world.
In , an opera company offered a download of a complete performance. The words of an opera are known as the libretto, some composers, notably Wagner, have written their own libretti, others have worked in close collaboration with their librettists, e. Mozart with Lorenzo Da Ponte. Melodic or semi-melodic passages occurring in the midst of, or instead of, the terminology of the various kinds of operatic voices is described in detail below.
Over the 18th century, arias were accompanied by the orchestra. Subsequent composers have tended to follow Wagners example, though some, the changing role of the orchestra in opera is described in more detail below. Bohemianism — Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic, literary or spiritual pursuits.
In this context, Bohemians may or may not be wanderers, adventurers, Bohemians were associated with unorthodox or anti-establishment political or social viewpoints, which often were expressed through free love, frugality, and—in some cases—voluntary poverty.

Literary Bohemians were associated in the French imagination with roving Romani people, outsiders apart from conventional society, the term carries a connotation of arcane enlightenment, and also carries a less frequently intended, pejorative connotation of carelessness about personal hygiene and marital fidelity. In England, Bohemian in this sense initially was popularised in William Makepeace Thackerays novel, Vanity Fair, public perceptions of the alternative lifestyles supposedly led by artists were further molded by George du Mauriers highly romanticized best-selling novel of Bohemian culture Trilby.
The novel outlines the fortunes of three expatriate English artists, their Irish model, and two very colorful Central European musicians, in the artist quarter of Paris. Also reflects the Bohemian lifestyle in Montmartre at the turn of the 20th century, in the s, aesthetic bohemians began to arrive in the United States. In New York City in , a group of some 15—20 young and this group gathered at a German bar on Broadway called Pffaffs beer cellar.

Similar groups in cities were broken up as well by the Civil War. During the war, correspondents began to assume the title bohemian, Bohemian became synonymous with newspaper writer. Mark Twain included himself and Charles Warren Stoddard in the category in Club member and poet George Sterling responded to this redefinition, Any good mixer of convivial habits considers he has a right to be called a bohemian, but that is not a valid claim. There are two elements, at least, that are essential to Bohemianism, the first is devotion or addiction to one or more of the Seven Arts, the other is poverty.

In March , YouTube began free streaming of certain content, according to YouTube, this was the first worldwide free online broadcast of a major sporting event. On March 31,, the YouTube website launched a new design, with the aim of simplifying the interface, Google product manager Shiva Rajaraman commented, We really felt like we needed to step back and remove the clutter.
In May , YouTube videos were watched more than two times per day. This increased to three billion in May , and four billion in January , in February , one billion hours of YouTube was watched every day. She now holds dual Russian and Austrian citizenship and currently resides in Vienna, Austria, Netrebko was born in Krasnodar, in a family of Kuban Cossack background. While a student at the Saint Petersburg conservatoire, Netrebko worked as a janitor at Saint Petersburgs Mariinsky Theatre, later, she auditioned for the Mariinsky Theatre, where conductor Valery Gergiev recognized her from her prior work in the theatre.
He subsequently became her vocal mentor, under Gergievs guidance, Netrebko made her operatic stage debut at the Mariinsky at age 22, as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. Following this successful performance, she became a frequent guest singer in San Francisco and she is known as an acclaimed interpreter of other Russian operatic roles, such as Natasha in Prokofievs War and Peace, Louisa in Betrothal in a Monastery and Marfa in The Tsars Bride. She also performed at the Russian Childrens Welfare Societys major fund raiser and she returned to the Ball in and and is an honorary director of the charity.
Her second album, Sempre Libera, was released the following year, however, she cancelled three subsequent performances due to suffering a bronchial condition. This was the time she had cancelled her performances at the Royal Opera House. Originally scheduled for 2 March , Netrebko postponed the recital because she did not feel artistically ready, Netrebko appeared at the Last Night of the Proms on 8 September of that year where she performed Ah.
She then sang the role in January and February at the Metropolitan Opera. Karrs story was in turn based in the Central European legend of the vila, the opera, in its original one-act version, was first performed at the Teatro Dal Verme, Milan, on 31 May Le Villi is Puccinis first stage work and it was written for an competition of one-act operas by the publisher Sonzogno in his periodical Il teatro illustrato, but did not even earn an honourable mention.
According to Mosco Carner, this may have been because it was written in haste that the score was all. His supporters, who included Arrigo Boito, funded the first production, Ricordi urged the composer to expand the work, and Puccini did, producing a new version later that year, which was followed by modifications in , and the final version in A performance typically lasts 64 minutes, in the libretto, each part of the symphonic intermezzo between Acts 1 and 2 — LAbbandono and La tregenda — is preceded by explanatory verses recounting the intervening events.
Michele Girardi, citing a letter from Fontana to Puccini on 3 September , has pointed out that the librettist intended for these to be read by the audience but not actually recited by a narrator. Likewise, there is no record of a narrator having been used at the first performance of Le Villi at the Metropolitan Opera in , a narrator is also used in the Sony studio recording of the work.
However, on occasion it was not viewed favourably by either the audience or the critics who characterized it as simply an imitation of Wagner. Roberto must leave before the ceremony to collect an inheritance, Roberto comforts Anna telling her that it will be fine and they will marry when he returns from Mainz.
Anna tells Roberto of her dreams of him dying but Roberto tells Anna that she should not worry about his love failing, the crowd returns and Anna is still worried about Roberto leaving. Roberto is enchanted by a siren, and forgets Anna, Anna waits through the summer and the autumn and in the winter dies in his absence. The libretto is in Italian, and was cobbled together by five librettists whom Puccini employed, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, Domenico Oliva, the publisher, Giulio Ricordi, and the composer himself also contributed to the libretto.
So confused was the authorship of the libretto that no one was credited on the page of the original score. However, it was Illica and Giacosa who completed the libretto, Puccini took some musical elements in Manon Lescaut from earlier works he had written. For example, the madrigal Sulla vetta tu del monte from act 2 echoes the Agnus Dei from his Messa a quattro voci, other elements of Manon Lescaut come from his compositions for strings, the quartet Crisantemi, three Menuets and a Scherzo. While Puccini and Ricordi may not have known it, the French composer Daniel Auber had also written an opera on the same subject with the title Manon Lescaut.
Despite all the warnings, Puccini proceeded, Manon is a heroine I believe in and therefore she cannot fail to win the hearts of the public. Why shouldnt there be two operas about Manon, a woman like Manon can have more than one lover. He added, Massenet feels it as a Frenchman, with powder, I shall feel it as an Italian, with a desperate passion.
The first performance of Manon Lescaut took place in the Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February , it was Puccinis third opera, time, The second half of the eighteenth century. It is evening, townspeople, soldiers and a crowd of students and girls stroll through the avenue. Some are seated at the tables outside the Inn, drinking and gambling, Edmondo sings a song of youthful pleasure. Des Grieux enters, and they greet him, but he is melancholic and does not join the others and they joke with him and provoke him to feign flirtation with the girls.
The crowd comments Edmondo and the students admire Manon, the other passengers enter the Inn, while Lescaut signals Manon to wait for him. She sits, as des Grieux, who has fixated on her, approaches her and declares his feelings for her.

He offers to help her, and when Lescaut calls her he begs her to him later. It premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 14 January and it contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, as well as some of Puccinis best-known lyrical arias. Puccini saw Sardous play when it was touring Italy in and, after some vacillation, turning the wordy French play into a succinct Italian opera took four years, during which the composer repeatedly argued with his librettists and publisher.
Tosca premiered at a time of unrest in Rome, and its first performance was delayed for a day for fear of disturbances, despite indifferent reviews from the critics, the opera was an immediate success with the public. Musically, Tosca is structured as a work, with arias, recitative, choruses. Puccini used Wagnerian leitmotifs to identify characters, objects and ideas, the dramatic force of Tosca and its characters continues to fascinate both performers and audiences, and the work remains one of the most frequently performed operas.
Many recordings of the work have been issued, both of studio and live performances, the French playwright Victorien Sardou wrote more than 70 plays, almost all of them successful, and none of them performed today.

Ricordi sent his agent in Paris, Emanuele Muzio, to negotiate with Sardou and he complained about the reception La Tosca had received in Italy, particularly in Milan, and warned that other composers were interested in the piece. Nonetheless, Ricordi reached terms with Sardou and assigned the librettist Luigi Illica to write a scenario for an adaptation, in , Illica advised Puccini against the project, most likely because he felt the play could not be successfully adapted to a musical form.
When Sardou expressed his unease at entrusting his most successful work to a new composer whose music he did not like. He withdrew from the agreement, which Ricordi then assigned to Alberto Franchetti, Illica wrote a libretto for Franchetti, who was never at ease with the assignment.
There are several versions of how Ricordi got Franchetti to surrender the rights so he could recommission Puccini, by some accounts, Ricordi convinced Franchetti that the work was too violent to be successfully staged. Franchetti family tradition holds that Franchetti gave the work back as a gesture, saying.
American scholar Deborah Burton contends that Franchetti gave it up simply because he saw merit in it. Franchetti surrendered the rights in May , and in August Puccini signed a contract to control of the project. According to the libretto, the action of Tosca occurs in Rome in June , Sardou, in his play, dates it more precisely, La Tosca takes place in the afternoon, evening, and early morning of 17 and 18 June Italy had long divided into a number of small states.

Though Puccinis first interest in the subject was based on his reading of Friedrich Schillers adaptation of the play, the original story is based on Turan-Dokht from the epic Haft Peykar, work of 12th-century Persian poet Nizami. The operas story is set in China and involves Prince Calaf, to obtain permission to marry her, a suitor has to solve three riddles, any wrong answer results in death. Calaf passes the test, but Turandot still refuses to marry him and he offers her a way out, if she is able to learn his name before dawn the next day, then at daybreak he will die.
The opera was unfinished at the time of Puccinis death in , the first performance was held at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 25 April and conducted by Arturo Toscanini. This performance included only Puccinis music and not Alfanos additions, the first performance of the opera as completed by Alfano was the following night,26 April, although it is disputed whether this was conducted by Toscanini again or by Ettore Panizza. Turandot is a Persian word and name that means the daughter of Turan, Turan being a region of Central Asia, in Persian, the fairy tale is known as Turandokht, with dokht being a contraction of dokhtar, the kh and t are both pronounced.
According to Puccini scholar Patrick Vincent Casali, the t is silent in the operas and title characters name. Soprano Rosa Raisa, who created the role, says that Puccini never pronounced the final t. Eva Turner, a prominent Turandot, did not pronounce the final t, Casali also maintains that the musical setting of many of Calafs utterances of the name makes sounding the final t all but impossible.
On the other hand, Simonetta Puccini, the granddaughter and keeper of the Villa Puccini. Italo Marchini questioned her about this in , ms. Puccini said that in Italian the name would be Turandotta. In the Venetian dialect of Carlo Gozzi the final syllables are dropped and words end in a consonant, ergo Turandott.
