I frequently use this book as an example of how even popular authors often have their covers skewed by the Marketing Troll. Anyway, goblins and harpies don't often, you know, procreate, even in Xanth.

So Gloha is lonely. And of course this loneliness takes the form of "OMG I need a mate. He sends her on a quest that doesn't necessarily seem like it's going to get her what she wants, but she does meet a winged centaur named Cynthia who isn't actually naturally a winged centaur because she was transformed to be that way and then got preserved in this brain coral thing.

Could Ned Stark Have Fooled Us All? (Game of Thrones) THEORY

I remember her account of being transformed being kind of weird. There was really no such thing as winged centaurs when she was turned into one, so she was basically a monster. And lady centaurs have big boobies, so get ready for her boobies to be described for ya. Old Magician Trent, now young again, is a character in this book, and after a very goofy quest wherein Gloha looks for love, they have a Wizard-of-Oz-like ending that results in Trent transforming a goblin so that Gloha can have the winged goblin she wants for, ya know, mating.

Can't be too specific about that! We'd violate the Adult Conspiracy! The reason I call this a Wizard-of-Oz-like ending is that in the Oz movie, Glinda tells Dorothy to go on a yellow-brick-road-led quest to ask the wizard about how to get home, and she has a grand adventure and gets wonderful companions. But then at the end, Glinda says she can get home by clicking her shoes. And I'm sure Anthony is proud of that. May 17, Don LaFountaine rated it really liked it. Book 17 of the Xanth Series finds Gloha going to the Good Magician's castle to get the answer as to who is her true love.

As a crossbreed of a goblin and harpy, two species that have been fighting for centuries, she is the only one of her kind. Except for her brother Harglo, but he does not count in her search. She gets through the three challenges, and gets an answer from the Good Magician to see his second son.

Along the way, she meets some characters that readers of the series will be happy to read about again But plans changed, and as it turns out, the only way for Gloha to find her true love is to have King Trent join the quest.

So the King takes some youth elixir and helps Gloha. This is a fun adventure for fans of the series, and it fills in some background about the main characters, including King Trent. We get a better picture as to what his life was like in Mundania, about his wife and child, and how he learned about honor. We see Gloha become more mature as her adventure continues, and how she comes to realize that the Good Magician's answers, though often unclear at first, make sense in the end. Xanth fans will enjoy this installment. Though it is not necessary to have read books 1 - 16 first to enjoy this one, those that have will find some stories fleshed out a little more.

However I do enjoy the series a lot, and felt it warranted 4 stars instead of Feb 23, weakwithwords added it. I found my hardbound copy many, many years ago. That it was in a bargain bin should have been a warning, but it was in good condition and I'm into fantasy so I bought it. That was a mistake. It took me months to finish, often finding reasons to procrastinate.

Although I initially had high hopes given the attractive cover and seemingly interesting summary at the back, it quickly proved to be consistently boring. Parts intended to be light humor were shallow and corny. Swallowing my disappointment, I found my hardbound copy many, many years ago. Swallowing my disappointment, I sought a second opinion thinking perhaps it was just a matter of my taste being skewed and immature. My mom is a significantly greater bookworm and I'm biased into supposing that she's more enlightened.

I tried gifting it to her. She skimmed the first few pages, did it again, shook her head, and returned it. For over a decade, Harpy Thyme has been sitting in a dark corner inside my cabinet, not even given the clemency of showcasing itself on a bookshelf. Maybe someday I'll try rereading it.

Then again, most likely not. There are so many other books that I want to read, that I will want to read, that I might need to read, that rereading something I didn't enjoy the first time around would be too much of a luxury. Feb 15, Kathy Davie rated it really liked it Shelves: The 17th tale in the Xanth series, Harpy Thyme involves the very lonely Gloha, the only female harpy-goblin in Xanth who is desperately in want of her very own male harpy-goblin. Naturally, since this is the pattern for all Xanth tales, Gloha undergoes the ritual set of riddles so she can finally get to the Good Magician who will solve all of her problems.

And, naturally, the Good Magicianthe cantankerous old bootsends her out on a journey to find his second son whom no one knows exists Who, naturally, isn't sure and sends Gloha on another journey as she collects fellow adventurers also seeking the answers to their questions. I really don't know how Anthony manages to pulls so many puns into each story and I find myself eagerly reading both for the actual adventure as well as for the pun of it. While you can read each Xanth novel on its own, I do recommend starting at the beginning with A Spell for Chameleon , the first story if only because each succeeding novel builds on it and makes the experience richer for the reader.

It's a wild set of wacky adventures through the pun that is Xanth in the course of which you learn to look at your own world with more tolerance and consideration. Jul 26, Julie Decker rated it it was ok. Gloha is the only creature of her kind in the land of Xanth.

On a quest, she meets a winged centaur who was transformed as a punishment, and she meets Magician Trent, who can transform creatures into other creatures. Somewhere here is a clue to help Gloha find love, but how will she know? At seventeen books in this series, I can count easily on one hand the number of them that do not centrally involve a character finding a mate for them. Gloha being lonely is understandable, but I would have liked to see a character once in a while look for companionship that doesn't get delivered in the form of "I am rare and special, so I need someone to mate with who is physically compatible with me, and yay I found them, so obviously we're in love now.

I guess if she didn't do that, there would have been nowhere to put this shipment of puns. Jan 24, Lel rated it it was ok Shelves: The quest starts from there. She teams up with Magician Trent, a giant, Marrow bones and a demon and they travel the length of Xanth to full fill a whole range of questions. I feel like I have grown out of Xanth novels.

Harpies #1 by Harpies — Kickstarter

I used to love them, all the puns, the funny characters, the mad story lines and the whole world itself. I used to have so much fun reading them and imagining how the world would be if we had pillow trees, pie trees, walking sticks and all the imaginary creatures. But the older I have got the more I find the characters very one dimensional, The jokes just are not as funny. I also find myself getting annoyed at various plot ideas.

I think that Xanth books are great in your teenage years but less and less as you get older. I now find the characters very stereotypical and superficial and the story lines in places very sexist. I'm not sure how many more times I will return to the land of Xanth any more. Jul 30, Carole rated it it was amazing. I enjoyed this one a lot more than the two immediately preceding it. She just didn't listen to those who had more experience than she did, but I suppose that has always been the way of teenagers.
