However, if you want to learn about XD, move on. This book will tell you how to install or configure certain things, but doesn't tell you WHY. Elaboration is minimal, no depth.
If you want to understand XD enough to be able to design, properly implement, support, and scale, look elsewhere.
Citrix XenDesktop 5.6 Cookbook
I was interested to see what a non-citrix based book was like and this is basically a poor copy of the products documentation with almost no practical usage or information. I've reviewed a Packt book before, and I am impressed with Packt Publishing. Packt asked me to take a look at another book, the Citrix XenDesktop 5.
It looks like another great book from Packt. This book is good for people that are approaching virtualization for the first time, because it uses step-by-step methods for practical deployment of XenDesktop 5. This is a very thorough book on XenDesktop 5.
If I had never used or installed XenDesktop before, I would definitely be using this book to get me through the process from installation to end user experience. The book touches on deploying Virtual Desktops and Applications, so it is a complete read to getting it done in your private cloud or datacenter. Towards the end are some chapters on using Powershell and smart cards for those advanced users. In summary, the Citrix XenDesktop 5. This book is a good walkthrough of the practical use of XenDesktop 5. This book is a great reference for setting up XenDesktop.
It is very detailed and gives you step by step for getting the environment setup.
The book gives the steps for using VMware, hyper-v, or xenserver. It covers setting up the image, from registry keys to services. Then it moves on to policies. I wish there was a book like this for every one of citrix applications. I'm still working on my XenDesktop Pilot and keep referencing the book when I'm not sure about something.

The author wrote this book using a step by step methodology, very useful to people approaching XenDesktop for the first time. Starting from some installation hints on different hypervisor XenServer, VMware, Hyper-V , the author explains how to configure all basic and advanced features and how to perform optimization activities to achieve the best environment for end users.
In every chapter, after a theorichal introduction Getting ready section , there is a step by step guide How to do it Then there are a How it works and a There's more sections with more detailed explanation and useful tips. At the end of each chapter there is also a lab section, to test the comprehension and to give the reader the possibility to create a full functioning environment.

But i suppose with these cookbooks they really are just small recipe's and not a full deep dive into the subject.

If you want a book that as mentioned earlier discloses everything about Xendesktop, i. If you want a book which steps you through the process of installing and configuring Xendesktop successfully, then this is the book for you! Apr 03, Dave Chambers rated it it was amazing. Once I have a good working process I always document the entire thing from beginning to end with screenshots and notes. This is what the Author has done with this book and taken it a step further to include options for different scenarios as you progress through the procedures.
