There are marvellous passages of descriptive writing and if you think that a novel about the railways is bound to be dull you will find yourself happily mistaken. The depiction of Jacques, genetically doomed to be a murderer, is more frightening than any Hannibal Lecter. Some modern readers may have difficulty empathising with Zola's ideological beliefs, but in the end the novel carries all before it. A shattering, truly memorable work of art, very well translated. Much more intensely focussed than the more sprawling Zola. Centered around the world of trains No matter what time period we are in, this book holds ttruths about mankind in general. It is a very cynical way to see humanity but it is a PART of who we are. Well written, and even better in French. It's a great read that leaves you thinking. Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase.

Much of the dialogue and narration is about Too domestic and mundane for my tastes. Much of the dialogue and narration is about other characters' reactions to him, and you don't see how he bends the congregation to his will. He may be slightly creepy, but he's no Rasputin. Faujas's deeds mainly include building a club for young men and a sort of day-care for young women so that they can sew all day instead of getting into some vague kind of trouble. Given that my English translation calls them "hussies", maybe they're supposed to be former prostitutes?
The characterization of Marthe and the melodramatic ending save this from being two stars. Either way, feel free to skip the Conquest of Plassans. The Fortune of the Rougons if anything should have the Conquest of Plassans title. This time the topic is half first cousins Marthe Rougon and Francois Mouret, who have been married for 20 or so years and have 3 kids sons and a mentally disabled daughter. Over the course of the book, they rent a room to a priest and his mother when he is assigned too Plassans. This makes Marthe become very interested in church, which she never attended before.
La Conquête de Plassans [Annotée]
The priest is a bit odd, as he works his way into society, but over a few years he has made 4 Rougon-Macquart, and not my favorite. The priest is a bit odd, as he works his way into society, but over a few years he has made his power play within the bishopric. Meanwhile, the kids have all left the house, and the priest's sister and her husband have also rented a room from the Mourets.
This is all church and small-town politics and society. Not my cup of tea in general, and certainly not my favorite Zola. I've gotten through 8. It's possible that I'm getting used to his style. These books go from intense detail of daily life during the 2nd empire Napoleon III to spectacular human rupture. They are getting better, and this is the best so far. These two have succeeded to retire in Plassans.

Plassans has just voted for the opposition. Well worth the eff 6th in the list of Well worth the effort. The Conquest of Plassans is the fourth book in Zola's 20 book Rougon-Macquart cycle detailing the lives of 2 families in 2nd Slow Empire France of the s. The focus of this book is the long reach of the clerisy and the power they wielded in their day. Mouret suffers a complete reversal of. Faujas rises in power and prestige in the town, while Mouret loses his. This one was okay.

It featured the Mourets. Mouret is kind of a jerk, but he ends up getting screwed by the town politics. Mouret is a gentle, unoffending soul, but she is manipulated by the cure, who is a real player. It all ends in disaster. Haha sorry for the lousy review. So my memory of this one is a bit vague. This fifth installment of the Rougon-Macquart saga is not the happiest of books.
Out of all the Zola I have read, I place this one at the bottom of the list. A tale of a thoroughly dysfunctional family and their boarders. It is a story filled with madness, jealousy and the lust for power. I am glad I read it as I do want to go through all 20 volumes, but not one I recommend.

I did not like this book as well as the others in the R-M series. Partly, for me, it was too confusing with all the intrigue. Also I did not think the crisis at the end was believable. Still an ok read, and important to the R-M series. AKA "Priest in da House! The Mourets and assorted citizens. Lecture difficile, histoire abracadabrantesque, un chapelet de crimes et une fin sordide.
