Remember to look closely at the cover of all these "complete" Sherlock Holmes books. With the wonders of capitalistically fueled competition, each edition of all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is beginning to look more and more similar. Not all are created quite as equal as one would think, however. Read on to find out more. In my quest to find the holy grail of Sherlock Holmes literature, aka; THE definitive collection of original, Conan Doyle penned stories, I actually ended up buying and reading and rereading 3 different versions.
My assessment of all 3 is as follows: The Ultimate Collection - http: It DOES include all 4 novels and 56 short stories, but the book is all text, with no real illustrations to speak of. When I first purchased it as an ebook, it did NOT include all the stories, but before I was even finished reading it, a simple Kindle update added all the rest, making it certifiably "complete. At any rate, the "Film and Television Adaptations" and Beyond the Canon" synopsis sections at the end of the book are also included, but do not appear in the other Sherlock Holmes collections.
Kindle formatting isn't so good in this one, however, unfortunately. My five star rating is for the writing itself, which is of course, practically peerless. Volumes The Heirloom Collection - http: Most importantly, it does contain all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, though not always in the exact same order as other editions -- making it a little confusing, when comparing different editions, to determine if all the stories are actually included and they really are.
Design wise, the graphic presentation font choices, layout, etc of this "heirloom edition" is superb -- making it clearly better in that regard than perhaps any of the "complete" Sherlock Holmes books currently available. The color illustrations aren't bad either, but there really aren't all that many for such a large book, filled with so many classic tales. Good Kindle formatting overall, but not as good as it could have been.
And it's the absolute best of the three, in my opinion. Kindle formatting is superb, and best of all, most if not all of the classic illustrations that accompanied the original, first run publication of each story are included. Some short stories even have up to three separate illustrations!
So for my money, the Top Five Classics edition 3 is hands down the very best one currently available. Jul 13, Alissa rated it it was amazing. These are great detective novels. One of the better mysteries I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's the best fiction novel about detective ever..

I absolutely recommend this book to all of you who like good novels. I myself basically don't like detective novels. Except for this one. Sir Arthur is definitely brilliant when it comes to describing the adventures of Sherlock and Dr. I can't stop reading it. Curiosity is the key. And Sir Arthur seems to know his reader like it.
The Complete Sherlock Holmes (Illustrated) by Arthur Conan Doyle on Apple Books
I'm in love with Sherlock and Dr. The illustrations are all so good. I enjoyed reading about the debates that Watson and Sherlock Holmes had. It's a companion volume to Sherlock Holmes The Complete Illustrated Short Stories and is as beautifully illustrated as the other with the illustrations from the original serial publication in Punch and the other magazines of the day. The four novels contained within are all well known, possibly excepting the last one. Holmes' first appearance is in A Study in Scarlet , which sees Holmes and Watson take up residence at B Baker St; The Sign of Four isn't really all that memorable a story of betrayal and revenge; The Hound of the Baskervilles is probably his most famous story; and The Valley of Fear is the only story, other than The Adventure of the Final Problem to mention Professor Moriarty it was set before the latter, although written after.
The Valley of Fear resurrects the successful formula from A Study in Scarlet by having the mystery solved about half way through the book, and then a historical narrative to show how we got there in the first place. The last one is the only one of the novels that I hadn't read before, but you can't really go that far wrong with a Holmes novel and I've enjoyed dipping back into Conan Doyle's world to watch the master at work. I liked these four short novels, but I did find myself ready for each one of them to be over before it was. And I'd had more than my fill of them by the fourth novel.
However, they are iconic for good reason. Sherlock Holmes is quite an interesting fellow. However, he's a tad inconsistent.
The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes
Though I didn't really want to read the four of them all at once, each novel does have different things to offer. It I liked these four short novels, but I did find myself ready for each one of them to be over before it was. It also provides a look at early Mormons that current members of the Mormon faith will find. I think it's likely I would prefer the short stories, but I need to take some time off Sherlock Holmes before I try reading one.

Watson as they look beyond the obvious to solve heinous criminal As a kid I had read and cherished several of the Sherlock Holmes short stories, and as an adult I have greatly enjoyed BBC's series "Sherlock. Watson as they look beyond the obvious to solve heinous criminal mysteries that leave the local forces mystified. The writing is typical of 19th century English literature, with lengthy descriptions of settings and complex back-stories and resolutions -- a formula not generally familiar to a modern reader.
If one is willing to to absorb it all or at the very least, scan through it , the reader will be treated to the keen insight of a detective's mind, subtle wit, and fascinating twists and turns throughout each case.
