She combined her love of Gothic literature with her love of poetry by including the poems she had written in her novels. In The Mysteries of Udolpho , a novel about secrets and mysteries, Radcliffe included a sonnet a poem with fourteen lines that uses different rhyme schemes.

The sonnet combines the elements of the mysterious and the romantic, and uses specific words to display the different themes of a typical Gothic novel. Words like conceal and beguile create an air of mystery, and phrases like pensive face and animated grace describe the young heroine. This infection lead to her death in Ann Radcliffe was born in in England and is known for her Gothic novels. She was named after her mother. Her husband, William Radcliffe, greatly supported her writing, allowing her not to work.

A poet as well as a novelist, she incorporated her poems into the novels that she wrote. After a nervous breakdown and serious respiratory issues, she moved from London to Ramsgate in hopes of improving her health.
