Trivia About The Admirals' Gam As John Pearce is moved out of his way, Admiral Hotham arranges a court martial in which Captain Barclay is declared innocent due to lack of eligible evidence. Because of this act of Barclay, a breach takes place between him and his beautiful wife named Emily Barclay. After some time, John Pearce makes a return back to the siege after surviving conflicts on both water and land. He learns that Captain Barclay has been acquitted of all the charges laid by him and that he has been exempted from any further trials as per the double jeopardy law.

In the background, the mayhem continues to mount as the revolutionary forces are getting closer to recapture the port and one among them is the ferocious Napoleon Bonaparte. Emergency evacuation takes place in Toulon in order to avoid the destruction of life and property on a larger scale. The other supporting characters include the Pelican gang members.
Donachie has set the plot against the backdrop of the French Revolution. At the start of the novel, it is shown that John Pearce has gone through a number of adversaries, since he was press ganged illegally to join the Navy of King George. Because of successfully overcoming all the adversaries, he secured a commanding position on board the HMS Faron.
Previously, John Pearce had overcome the attack of the French forces during the Toulon Siege with the help of his Pelican comrades. Now, he is facing a bloody battle in the on-going attempt to defend the overtaking of the port by the French naval forces. As all this is happening, his ongoing conflict with Ralph Barclay continues to intensify as Barclay is about to face another court martial to explain his actions.
The Admirals' Game
The future of Captain Ralp Barclay seems highly uncertain because his superiors, Admiral Hotham and Admiral Lord Hood are in a fight as they want to implement their own ways to deal with misgivings of Ralph Barclay. Also, Emily Barclay finds it very difficult to cope with the barbarous nature of her husband.
Due to all these factors, John Pearce hopes that his retribution may happen sooner than expected. But, doubts still remain whether it will prove to be in his advantage or not. As the story continues further, John Pearce confronts continuing assaults from his superiors as well as from the French Army.

The growing assaults make Pearce realize that he and his Pelican gang are part of a potentially fatal and large plan. He is becoming to naval battles what Bernard Cornwell is to land battle scenes.
Peter Wickham narrated the book. I have read or listened to, almost every Royal Navy series out there and enjoyed the first three Donachie Pierce novels. However, this book felt like 20 middle chapter in a much larger work. Unfortunately, those 20 chapters did very little to forward the story imo and were mind numbingly boring.
I don't have any problems with long charter development books like Post Captain but this one was utterly without action and suspense. I hope the next Pierce novel is better and actually has some amount of sea-born action or I'll be forced to give up on the series. Well written narrative of 18th century naval life of pressed sailors in the Royal Navy. Lots of action will keep you engaged.
