I just don't like Jake Feb 19, Kristy rated it liked it Shelves: Sometimes there are short stories that really bring something to the overall series, but I didn't feel like this one did much of that.

Feb 17, Clair rated it liked it Shelves: After being stuck in a Safeway with thirteen other students, Jake Simonsen treks outside to figure out if the hospital is still open. He sees a wall full of photographs, flyers, and notes from people searching for their loved ones. As he reads a few of the notes he finds one from Lindsey Morrow, a girl who Jake had a secret fling with. He tells the others at the Safeway that everything is too much for him to handle, and goes in search of Lindsey.

He leaves the relative safety of the Safeway, and the familiarity of it in search for a girl that he may or may not have. I think this shows that even though Jake is a macho jerk that he still has feelings, and he still cares about people. When he finally makes it to Lindsey house, he finds out that she is in a hellish situation. Lindsey is protecting and caring for her type-O dad who is hiding in the closet. At any moment he could snap and kill her, but she is unwilling to leave him even though he and Jake try to convince her otherwise.

Even though her dad killed their neighbors and almost killed Lindsey, Lindsey still feels loyal to him. After spending some times with Lindsey, Jake realizes that he has lost the rest of his Obezine pills, which he has recently become addicted to. Jake tries to leave to find it, but Lindsey convinces him to stay the night. This shows how ridiculously addicted Jake is, he is willing to risk his life, and the comfort of a girl he like for pills. Instead of being angry, Mr.

Morrow is relieved that Lindsey will now have a companion to look for safety with. Lindsey refuses to go, even though there is no chance of long-term survival in her basement. Finally, Jake decides to leaves the basement to look for his family, but he leaves Lindsey the gun. I think this short story is important to the Monument 14 series. It shows that even the stereotypical jock has a heart.

Aug 09, T. Jake and the Other Girl picks up Jake's story after he leaves the Monument We get inside his head and learn why he left Astrid, the popular girl who is pregnant with his baby.

Jake and the Other Girl (Monument 14, #) by Emmy Laybourne

His blood type has left him impotent, a fate worse than death for a boy like Jake. When he stumbles upon a girl he knows from school, a girl he knows intimately, he hopes she'll stir something in him. But they're not alone, and once again Jake will have to make a decision to stay or go. It fills in some blanks and shows us what drives Jake. He becomes a little more likeable once we understand him. Sure, he's still a putz, but he's a tolerable putz. Plot It's a short story, only 26 pages, so the plot isn't meaty or deep, but it does move the story forward, providing additional pieces to the puzzle of what happened outside the Greenway where the Monument 14 have been holed up.

Its primary function is to develop Jake's character, which it does nicely. Characters Only three characters are in Jake and the Other Girl. One being Jake, the other is well, the Other Girl, also known as Lindsey, and Lindsey's father, who has the same aggressive blood type as Astrid and Dean. Lindsey is only 15 and Jake is 18 which makes their physical relationship ten kids of wrong, but it shows us so much more about Jake's character than if she'd been older. Jake is a piece of work. He's immature, selfish, and pretty much only thinks about sex and drugs.

But there is more to Jake than that. Emmy Laybourne has actually crafted a fascinating character in Jake. He seems like a stereotype, and yet, there is more to him than the just the drug-taking star athlete who knocks up the most popular girl in school.

He's a cliche and yet he's not. All presented in just 26 pages. Bottom Line This is really Jake's story and while it doesn't absolve him of his sins, it helps us understand the Jake we never knew. And that's a good thing. Jun 27, Kelly rated it really liked it Shelves: I read book 1 in this series back when it came out check out my review on Amanda's blog. Now, I didn't love that book and this was mostly due to a few inconsistent style choices that took me out of the narrative BUT So, when this freebie short story popped up, I decided to give it a whirl.

I will say that the style choices that bothered me with book 1 weren't present, which I read book 1 in this series back when it came out check out my review on Amanda's blog. I will say that the style choices that bothered me with book 1 weren't present, which helped nudge me in the enjoyment direction. Jake's sexual escapades were touched on, which moves this into the upper end of the YA bracket, in my opinion, but it was nothing graphic or terribly risque.

Jake and the Other Girl

The fact that something terrible has forced these kids to do things they wouldn't have otherwise considered continues to pique my interest. They've seen death and brutality and they're still adjusting to it. They have to deal with some very real consequences of the toxin that was pumped into the air. For Jake, who is now impotent and infertile, this puts a major crimp in his lifestyle.

For Lindsay, who has a father who's one of the ones afflicted with blinding rage and a need to hurt anyone he comes across, she's put in the position of running off to try to save herself, leaving her dad to die of starvation, or sticking it out. Overall, it's an interesting peek into a character that isn't very easy to like and the girl he was cheating with. I'm kinda hoping we get to see more about both of them in book 2. Nov 24, Ricarda Scola rated it liked it.

May 13, Jessica rated it did not like it Shelves: Not convinced are you? Usually when I give one stars, it's because the writing is atrocious or the characters are stupid and un-relatable or the plot is un-followable. This doesn't really have any of that. What it did was made me hate Jake. So assuming you have read Monument 14, I'm going to spoil that.

As Jake was in that book, I liked him. Despite his flaws, I enjoyed him as a character, because he felt real. I don't know much about popular high school jocks, but the fact that he named his girlfriend's breasts after Disney Princesses and spent most of his time getting high felt like something that real high schoolers would do. He seemed like a nice enough guy, if not a bit stupid and annoying.

I certainly liked him more than his buddy and Dean at times. I even bought the fact that he left the other kids to fend for themselves. But in this book! I did not expect to get such insight to teenage sex. I never wanted to read such. There is some of that in Monument 14, and I hated it then too.

The girl's underage, and he is paying her with chocolate. It just really makes me sick. Feb 18, chucklesthescot rated it liked it Shelves: When Jake goes to look for anyone at the hospital who can help, he finds messages from people seeking loved ones. One message is from Lindsay, the girl that Jake cheated on Amber with and he decided to find out if she is still alive. He sets out on the journey to her house, not sure what he'll find or what dangers lurk on the roads. While I found the story interesting, I really started to despise Jake a little here.

We see his true motivations and how everything he does is selfish and for his own When Jake goes to look for anyone at the hospital who can help, he finds messages from people seeking loved ones. We see his true motivations and how everything he does is selfish and for his own ends. He doesn't really care about Lindsay-just wants to have sex with her again to prove he hasn't gone sterile. He doesn't want to save her or bring her to safety as that might be awkward with Amber being there.

And of course, priority number one is to find the drugs that he dropped. The guy is a total loser and you can see why Amber is having seconds thoughts about Dean in comparison to this idiot. It was a good story, filling in the gap about what Jake did when he left the store and his reasons for going back to the group.

Mar 16, Melanie Gin rated it it was ok. Okay so this was of course very short. And I can see why people are angry about this because Jake left for a "stupid" reason. Yes it was stupid but part of it wasn't. He states that he couldn't return because he couldn't stand being useless and seeing disappointed faces. All the faces he saw that he knew on the hospital wall pushed him near the edge again.

However, his thoughts about sex were pathetic and ridiculous at a time of crisis. But it still got us a sense of him and to be honest he wasn't a great guy to like in 'Monument 14' to begin with and this was certainly not written to actually like him, just to know what he was doing and what he has been thinking.

I personally didn't like it but I still see the reason it was written Aug 25, Shylee W. It was interesting to see what happened to Jake and what made him decide to leave the group behind once he reached the hospital. Which happened to be a girl and that I sure as hell didn't see coming. Does it make me like Jake more? He's not a least favorite character of mine but he's not a favorite either, he's just a popular guy that fell off the rails and is extremely addicted to drugs with a slight douche baggary attitude. Is baggary a word? I'm using it anyways It was interesting to see what happened to Jake and what made him decide to leave the group behind once he reached the hospital.

I'm using it anyways and this novella did nothing but support that. Novellas are always just for kicks and little insights for me and I always enjoy them even if they're bad or are about a character I don't necessarily care for. Jul 07, Yani Daniele rated it really liked it. Apr 13, Nadia rated it it was ok Shelves: Am I supposed to feel bad for this guy now? I get that he doesn't want any responsibilities. But he left because he saw the photo of this FIFTEEN year old girl he hooks up with occasionally and then he's like sad since he's impotent now "But if there was anyone who could get him up again, it was Lindsay Morrow.

Just seeing her body in her bathing suit on the photo had almost done it for him. I'm so sad that in the end, this fifteen year old hot girl couldn't get you going OMFG. Sep 11, Caity rated it it was ok Shelves: I was kind of excited for it at first.

It was a good opportunity to learn more about Jake as a character. However, this story was basically just him running off to have sex. Even as a teenager, I can't imagine in an apocalyptic world, risking your life to go to visit your booty calls house. To see if she's alive?
