Yet his soul never rests. For Auriemma, life affords only the briefest moments of happiness-a good round of golf, forty minutes of great basketball, a day at the beach with his family, a nice glass of wine-while disaster is seemingly always waiting to strike. It's a fatalistic philosophy, a remnant of his hardscrabble early years, but it's an outlook that has driven him to unparalleled success.

In this deeply personal memoir, Geno Auriemma reveals for the first time the man behind the legend. He talks candidly about his coaching style-famed for being one of the most demanding in all the sports world. You get a courtside seat to all of the action-including an epilogue on the season, as well as interviews with the team's most celebrated players.

Geno : in pursuit of perfection

A rare look inside the soul of a true competitor, GENO is the story of how one passionate man overcame his own fears to achieve an extraordinary record of success. The legendary coach of the University of Connecticuts womens basketball team shares a riveting, first-person account of what it takes to become the most successful collegiate womens basketball coach in the country. Many coaches achieve success in their careers, but few have carved out a legacy like Geno Auriemma.

Is he too tough on his players -- these "Sweet young ladies? Geno is who he is but ask his players and his local fans, particularly, and you will find that we have a different take than the basketball nation as a whole. The girls come into an environment that is family-oriented, close and caring. The coaching staff is sharp and always there for the girls. They are held to standards of dress on the court no makeup and no personalization on uniforms -- this is a team sport, after all ; they are held to standards of study and graduation -- they are there for an education that is both academic as well as all about basketball.

They are expected to behave on and off the court. None of this is policed by an internal 'sports militia' -- it is understood and these standards are recognized by the fans and the public. The individual personalities are their own, appreciated, and encouraged. Be who you are but learn to be the best you that you can be.

They have a fan base that is very large, widespread, and loyal. As a Lady Husky fan, one of the things that I appreciate most is the solid strength of the program and the fact that the girls are encouraged to grow into whomever they are meant to be as well as to become the best basketball player they can become. Both of these developments, as person and player, are of primary importance.

This is an enjoyable read, especially for a fan, that takes us to the However, the teams of Renee Montgomery, Maya Moore, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Moriah Jefferson, Breanna Stewart and all those fine players who were on the floor with them is yet to come, I hope -- still on the drawing board and meant to arrive. The story is not finished yet to the fans great delight.

Ever since I was young I always watched the UConn women's basketball games with my family. My current favorite player is Breanna Stewart, and that started even before her incredible run in the National Semifinals in April Now that the season is only a few days away, I decided to review my favorite book of all time. Auriemma is an incredible coach. If they are down at halftime, he knows the thing to tell them so they come Ever since I was young I always watched the UConn women's basketball games with my family.

If they are down at halftime, he knows the thing to tell them so they come out firing on all cylinders when the second half of play begins. The part that is even more incredible is the story of how he got to the top of the coaching heirarchy. No spoilers here, but I'm just going to say that it is amazing. This details behind the scenes of everything that went on behind each and every team from the time that Auriemma first started at Connecticut to about , or depending on the version I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the teams, and the struggles Auriemma faced with them, and how they celebrated with every win and rebounded with every loss.

This a must read for any Husky fan, and I think would be of interest to anyone who really watches the women's game. Understanding his background and how it shaped his values gives you some insight tnto the man you see on the sidelines. I think those who don't appreciate his unique talent as a coach are the same people who see him as arrogant and egotistical. Without taking away anything from what Pat Summit has done for the sport, the reality is that Geno is at the top of the mountain right now.

Over the last two years, every sportscaster has said "There is UConn, and then there is everybody else". That's not a lucky coincidence.

My Wishlist

There are a lot of good players in the game, but Geno has the unique ability to put together teams who are more focused on team success than individual success. By the time you finished what is a pretty quick and enjoyable read, you'll have a much better sense of what makes the man what he is and a good sense of the type of player that would choose UConn.

On a sidenote, I see the Pat Summit Coaches show sometimes. It is a typical straightforward boring coaches show.

The Geno show is more of a fun to watch comedy eith domr good basketball information. I do have two friends who are ex-Tennessee players. Our discourse is friendly, but for the most part, They just don't get this guy in Rocky Top land. It's the autobiography of Geno Auriemma, born in poverty in a village in the mountains near Naples, Italy, who emigrated to the US at age 7 and went on to become one of the most successful college basketball coaches in history.

As this is written , he has compiled a winning percentage of over 85 wins, losses and has won six national women's championships in 25 seasons as head coach at the University of Connecticut "UConn". What is even more impressive is that UConn's women's team, in the four years before he arrived, had a rather dismal 36 wins and 74 losses, meaning he was truly an empire builder.

So how did he do it? There is probably no simple answer, but he suggests it has a lot to do with his search for perfection, his belief that he attempts to instill in his players that they can and should must strive each day to improve their performances, no matter how impressive they may be. He also allows that he is more of a "seat of the pants" than "detail oriented" coach, although suggesting that Chris Dailey his top assistant and probably a big part of his success takes care of the details.

We learn that recruiting is "the worst part of my job" no real surprise and that of all the players he's had that completed four years with him i. He claims that in spite of his amazing record only Pat Summitt of the University of Tennessee comes close or surpasses, and she's been at it about ten years longer than he , no one has ever offered him a men's coaching job amazing.

What we don't learn much about is how he locates those great players, scouts opponents, and prepares for games. Perhaps he's reluctant to reveal everything since he presumably does not intend to retire any time soon? Coach Auriemma has lots of interesting and funny things to say about many of his players. His favorite is clearly Diana Taurasi, "the best player ever to come out of Connecticut". Of Swin Cash he says, "if [she] were a guy she'd be Walt Frazier.

Rebecca Lobo is mentioned but probably doesn't get as much credit as she should for helping launch his amazing career.
