This is the daily life of a teenage girl growing up in upstate NY.
The difference is she is much smarter than the average person and she meets at least 5 men who are an embarrassment to men. At least her grandfather is kind and loves her. As a man I got tired of the trash, cons, jerks, and stupid males she meets in her life.
The book shows great survival skills on the part of the girl. The religious part of the story is so true and so much the way I think of religion it was boring to me. Maybe while waiting at a future doctor's visit I will pick up and try to get through a bit more of this book. This was a very entertaining fictional production. It was hard to put this book down. Also, it is a quick and easy read. For the reader the outcome was not easily predictable until near the end of the book as is the case with many good fiction publications.
The publicity for this publication suggest that it is primarily for teens. I highly recommend this book whether one is a teenager or senior citizen. This beguiling tale is told by Charlene, a very bright teenage girl whose precarious future could include a foster home if her spectacularly dysfunctional family situation falls apart. She must repeatedly disregard a perfectly-functioning moral compass to avoid personal disaster.
After her shiftless parents run off, Charlene grows up in the home of her grandfather, whose sources of revenue include his moonshine business and his fraudulent church, both described with humor and great verisimilitude. The characters are skillfully drawn and the plot moves at a sprightly pace.
This entertaining, beautifully-crafted book deserves a wide readership. I am a great admirer of Laury Egan's previous writing: I used to teach 7th and 8th grade English and Reading. While this book is a bit advanced for that general audience although not because they are unaware of its subject matter or situations , I can recall some students for which I would recommend The Outcast Oracle. As for high school, I believe they would thoroughly enjoy this. I am not a believer in setting forth a summary of a piece. I believe authors, editors and other reviewers can entice you with those.
What I do believe in providing is a perspective on the author's use of language, structure, characterization, and in the case of much of Ms Egan's writing, suspense. Suspense is increased with each chapter, reinvigorated with each added character, and paralleled by Charlene "Charlie" Whitestone's increasing maturation and independence. Suspense is increased with each chapter, reinvigorated with each added character, and paralleled by Charlene "Charlie" Whitestone's increasing maturation and independence. The story is not so much a repetition of rise and fall, and ultimate climax, as it is a depiction of the roller-coaster ride of one very unique adolescent. As a teacher, I was always alert to finding new girl-centered novels.
This story is seen entirely through Charlie's fourteen-year-old, female eyes. But Charlie is an astute judge of the actions and motivations of others, sometimes to her credit, sometimes to her detriment, but always adding to her "education. There is not a one-dimensional or static character in her world. Finally, Laury Egan's use of language remains superb. However, the metaphors and vocabulary are Charlie's, without authorial intrusion, and dialogue is true to each character. I did not "feel" I was reading a YA novel, even an advanced version of one, but rather a self-contained year in one young woman's life.
I would love to learn about Charlie's next year or two or three; I believe we may! Ms Egan ends this novel on the cusp of the next stage of Charlie's life.

We may yet travel farther and further with both Charlene and Laury. Sep 05, Shelley rated it liked it. Charlie is a backwoods kind of girl with a grandfather who is not only a minister but also spends his spare time making hooch in his own still. She lives with grandpa because both of her parents are gone since her father is a terrible drunk and her mother is slowly loosing her sanity.
Though Charlie excels in school she just can't shake the stigma surrounding her family. Charlie desperately wants to fit in but it seems no matter what she does, it all works against her. Then her life suddenly cha Charlie is a backwoods kind of girl with a grandfather who is not only a minister but also spends his spare time making hooch in his own still. Then her life suddenly changes one day and she has to fend for herself. But Charlie is a resourceful girl and even when a stranger shows up on her door, she still manages to hang on to her home; if only she can hold on to her dreams.
I had a hard time with this book because though I had empathy for Charlie, I couldn't help but notice she created a lot of her own problems. I know she is naive in the ways of the world but some of the situations she finds herself could have been avoided if she really wanted.
BEST EXPERIMENTAL TEEN BOOKS OF 2013:
I also had a hard time placing the time frame which the story took place. I discovered the story took place in the 60's which is mentioned later in the book when reference is made to Charlie's birthday. Though this book is listed as a YA read, I would have a hard time finding a particular audience this would appeal to.
