Not a big fan of the heroine and Vincent.. TBH both were so immature in this book, I felt like pulling my eyes out! The story drag on and on it was a struggle to finish the book! The situation with the heroine was quite unbelievable.. Here she is getting somewhat abused by her step dad and step sister The author was trying to make us readers feel sorry for the heroine..
The emotions was just not there. I don't hate the book, I just didn't care for it! I'm prolly not making any sense here.. I'll come back to this and maybe I could explain more later on.

But Yes I did I did did did: D Although this novel can be read as a standalone I recommend starting with the first book in the series and then work your way to this one.
It will be worth it ; Once I picked up this book I couldn't put it down P I was able to finish it in one day D Vincent is a made men, the son I couldn't think it was possible to love Vincent more than Nero. D Vincent is a made men, the son of the third most powerful man in the family, his best friend the son of the Boss and he lives to serve the family. Lake is a simple girl that goes to public school, her best friend is Vincent's sister, her father is a family man that can never become a made men, she dreams of going to college as far as she can get and has a little Cinderella spinoff story going on.
Apparently they each have their own way but after the night that Vincent catches Lake and his sister at a club dancing he starts seeing Lake in another light and wants from her what he know he can't have because mafia daughters don't date until they're 18 and they don't have sex until they are married.
Lake can't stop thinking about him after that same night when he takes her first kiss. What she knows for sure is that she doesn't want to be just another woman to Vincent. Things don't go as planned and instead of going to college Lake ends up having to keep her father alive by giving all her tuition money to the Boss and agreeing to work as a waitress in the underground casino to pay for her fathers debt. P What do you think Vincent does when he finds out? D Why did I love this book so much?
Well you know I'm a sucker for mafia novels so there's one reason. The second one was that I love a book with a strong female character and Lake despite the shity hand that life has dealt her is very strong and she get right back up after each blow. P And of course D But there was one thing that I did not like but not big enough to downgrade this book to a 4 star. It was interesting and I know that it had some parts that set the path for the next book but the author could have made it into a novella instead of prolonging this one.
One thing I have to ask the author View all 43 comments. Despite these issues, I liked the main characters and enjoyed them getting together. Unfortunately, I had way more issues with the way Vincent was written and When I read the first book in this series Nero , I liked it despite some issues with how over the top the actions were of some of the characters and despite the violence of the hero and his friends. Unfortunately, I had way more issues with the way Vincent was written and didn't enjoy the main characters either. The over the top writing style got even worse in this book until it was completely unbelievable.
I guess this author's heroines always have to be abused by someone, so the heroine every weekend goes to her mom and her step-father's house where she is I shit you not made to clean the house while they call her trailer trash and they don't let her eat and make her sleep in the attic. Are you playing a sad little fiddle for her too? Step daddy invents reasons for her mom to leave the house, apparently the whole time she is there then yells at her and somehow makes her clean until she drops.
I just don't know where to start with how dumb this plot point was. The heroine could have stopped this at any point by just not going to see her mom - but she doesn't. Her dad is in the freaking mob and supposedly never notices anything wrong. She supposedly doesn't say anything to anyone because she is afraid they will kill her mom.
None of this makes sense. The whole story just kind of jumps around, the heroine pulls some very dumb TSTL moments like going to see a mob boss twice, the second time was so idiotic for me because she had been told he will kill her if she does it again and then she does it for a dumb reason.
The girl is just not smart. I didn't feel the same connection between Vincent and Lake as I did between Nero and Elle, at least with Nero when he got to know Elle she was it for him. It was hard to see why Vincent wanted Lake so much when he didn't care about her for months after their first kiss. Basically I feel the author has some talent but needs to seriously tone down the over the top and unbelievable actions of her characters.
She also needs to work on her characterizations and add more depth to the people she creates in her stories. I will give her another chance despite this book, I think she can do better. View all 6 comments. So, i finally finished Vincent, Nero's best friend!!! And all i can say is that was freaking awesome!!!!
Different from Nero but in a good way I have mixed feelings about that book Lake and Vincent was also at the same situation as me Well, i went through an unstability I felt very sorry about Lake's fate in the beggining, but near to the end i turned out So, i finally finished Vincent, Nero's best friend!!! I felt very sorry about Lake's fate in the beggining, but near to the end i turned out to be sorry for Vincent's sake And I was angry with Vincent beacause he was a kind of jackass firstly, but finally i felt furious about Lake's constantly running away and the way she was leading herself all the time to get involve in bad situations Mixed feelings for this two They were driving me crazy for time to time I'm comfusing you, ugh???
Sorry, but i can't help it!!!!! That book was also intense and it was having a really big story with twists that mostly leaded me in shock situations!!!! Oh, my sweet Lord!!!!! I'm a little bit fucked up right now!!!! The first time we saw Lake was in "Nero". She and her best friend Adelyn was in a club for dancing, when Vincent marked her Unfortunately, after few moments, he realised that she was her stepsister's best friend But that fact sealed their fates Lake had a hard life Her father is a soldier in Caruso's mafia, but he's not a made men They are not having much money and they are living in a small house And since her mother left them, her father was having gabling problems Well, her life is bareable until the weekends Then she has to spend her time with her mother and her new family Don't get me wrong, she love her mother and she seems to love her back, but when she is not around her stepfather and his daughter turned her life in a fuckin' torture I can't tell you all the things that they done to her, but they really pissed me off!!!
So, as you can see, the only thing that Lake wants most in her life is to run away as far as she can and that she'll manage to earn it when she'll go to college And in this shitty "cake", Vincent added on the top as a cherry But when she's about to smell her freedom, something bad happened Her father made a shitty move and everything collapsed around her For saving her father, she will have to drop everything that ever wanted To be away from this fucking life and far away for all this mobster stuff But now she had to pay the debt to mafia and she will make it in a weird way that shocked me a little bit!!!!
Vincent is a comfusing guy!!!! He is in a constantly fight with the dark and the bright side inside of him!!!! He enjoys the fact that he is a member of the mafia and that he will become a made men It is in his nature He was born to become one of them He enjoys to cause pain and he really likes to fuck all kind of women Until Lake step into his life, but even then, he is refusing to admit that he has feelings for her So that brings a whole shitty, comfused situation Until he learns about the debt and that turns everything upside down for both of them The thing between them is intense but the two sides inside Vincent frighten Lake So she is constantly running away from him, but he always bring her back Don't get me wrong!!!
She like that very much, but she keep doing it And that made me so much furious Believe me when i'm saying that in the beginning i was by her side all the time, but near to the end i hated that she wasn't made a fuckin' decision what she really wants and i couldn't take it anymore that she made Vincent unsure and desperate man Well, i liked and this story very much and i liked the fact that we are seeing and the rest of the guys also Sarah, you have forced me in a crazy situation I am so desperate for that story I liked that crazy bastard, Lucca And i am so curious about Chloe and her phobias and her scars I really liked that the girls became all of them friends Especially, when Lake drifted Elle to make their men mad Team Amo or team Lucca???
Girls, i'm definetely team Lucca What can i say???? I loveeeeee that psychopath!!! Also i have to say a lot for her mother but i won't do it!!! The only thing that i can say about her is that i wasn't expecting that crap of her!!!!
She is unworthy for the mother's role And i don't want to talk about John and Ashley They got what they deserved!!!! That's all for now I can't wait for Lucca's turn!!!! I must know her secrets. She wants absolutely nothing to do with the Caruso family her father works for. He's a solider, bottom level. No Italian blood means no moving up. Her best friend Adalyn has an older brother. This older brother happens to be 18 year old Vincent Vitale. He's the son of the underboss. His options could be limitless in the family. Both Lake and Vincent want nothing and everything to do with each other. This is what happens when a made man becomes involved with a troublemaker from the wrong side of the tracks.
Family is determined by actions. Family is about trust. Family's is about acceptance. Family is about love. True family is earned, not born. I seriously need Lucca to be next. Vincent is the second story in the Made Men Series. Yo Vincent is the second story in the Made Men Series. I hated her situation and was so frustrated with her options. So when Lake put herself on the line and decided to help out, I was able to understand her decision. Lake's life isn't all sunshine and happiness, I felt like she did the only thing she thought she could. That is when Vincent moved from just another sexy womanizer to a great man.
I love seeing characters progress, grow and change for that one girl. Lake had never felt like she belonged more than she did in that moment with Vincent as he placed a light kiss on her shoulder. As the series suggests, this story takes place in a mafia type world. Is it the most realistic story? More than that it had lots of heart. View all 30 comments. Are these mafia princess rules where the girls stay virginal til marriage while the guy sleep with everything that moves still real? Or is this the s mafia? Anyway, Lake isn't mafia so why do the mafia princess rules apply to her? Then Lake is forced to wear slutty clothes while waitressing for the mafia which would never happen to a mafia princess to whom the chastity "rules" apply. Lake is all vulnerable and victimy from her crazy stepfather, and Vincent decides to be all protective and falls in love.
Vincent actually becomes pretty protective and loving. Could have been a 4 but a few things dragged it down. I guess it would have been hard to compare to Nero, which was so original and had a special love develop. It just seemed repetitive and formulaic abused girls who sacrifice themselves are worthy of love, all other girls are meat. Nero was a tough guy, but somehow a little less psychotic than Vincent I wasn't left sure that Vincent would never turn on Lake or his own kids.
There were some very jarring things that felt like caricatures and made it hard to stay the story. I get it, he's the boss. But why kill someone for trying to save her father and making payment? I was laughing out loud, AT the author.
It gave the sense that the book was written by a teenager. Maybe that is true and I just judge it as tween fanfiction. Really stupid and irrelevant Why are all these women sleeping with him?
Norman Vincent Peale - Wikipedia
The problem with these books is that these women will run to save their children Or else they are no better than Lake's mother, sacrificing their children for their own pleasure. First Nero, now Vincent. While Nero was a revenge fantasy for a bullying victim combined with a mafia romance and set,of all things, at a prep school, Vincent is like a mafia retelling of the Cinderella tale, complete with the bitchy stepsister, the beauty dressed in rags and the drafty room in the attic. And in this case, the fairy godmother comes in the form of a ruthless, violent, totally breathtaking mafia soldier I am loving these wacky yet deeply satisfying Made Men books by Sarah Brianne. And in this case, the fairy godmother comes in the form of a ruthless, violent, totally breathtaking mafia soldier.
Yeah, Vincent is no Prince Charming though he does rescue the damsel in distress. Honestly, I don't know how Sarah Brianne makes it all work but she does! I was initially very excited to see this shocking plot twist but it fizzled out pretty quickly and I was left wondering why in the world the author would make her characters make the trek to Treepoint and then just as quickly make them leave. I wish this had been developed a bit more. Fans anticipating the inevitable love triangle between Chloe, Lucca, and Amo, which was teased in Nero, will be ecstatic to learn they are a big part of Vincent.
I can't wait for the next Made Men. My pleasure was slightly marred by the stupid actions of the heroine, Lake Turner. I get that Sarah Brianne likes her heroines to have a martyr complex but by the nth time Lake gets in trouble and waits for Vincent to save her ass, my eyes were rolling up to the sky. In conclusion, I really liked volume 2 of Made Men though it did not quite reach the perfection of Nero, and I definitely will look forward to the continuation of this very unique and quirky series.

It's hard to describe when a book just fits, checks off all the boxes you have as a reader and just works. All the words combined deliver in a way that has you swooning, stuck in a fictional world and yet never wanting to escape it. Jessica Ruben delivered all of that in more in her debut story. The characters are flawed, strong, captivating and with every word I felt them more and more. I can't say enough about this one. A gritty, emotional, hard to read at times tale of how hard life can be on the "wrong side" of the tracks, while the over-privileged seek something simpler, the pureness of it.

I struggled a bit wth how to sort out my thoughts on how to review this story so I had to sit on it a few days. After a bit of reflection I'll tell you that Rising is a good book. It's well layered and peppered with a healthy dose of drama. I thought some parts were a bit predictable but other things came as a surprise. It's different, which I appreciated. So often debut authors come out and jump right on a bandwagon in an attempt to replicate what's already been done so I very much appreciated I struggled a bit wth how to sort out my thoughts on how to review this story so I had to sit on it a few days.
So often debut authors come out and jump right on a bandwagon in an attempt to replicate what's already been done so I very much appreciated that Jessica Ruben is making her own way in the romance genre with a story that felt refreshing and different. While I was definitely into the story, I didn't get the overwhelmingly giddy feels that my reader friends got. In hindsight, I wish I'd gone in blind. I had high hopes for nostalgic book feels after reading some reviews so that might be why I came away marginally underwhelmed.
I'm a little disappointed in myself that I didn't feel all the things they felt while reading. It could totally be blamed on my own headspace going into the book, having just come down from an epic book high after reading one of my top favorite books of the year.
SECTION ONE: The Appointment of Monsieur Vincent to the King’s Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs
Or it could just be that Rising didn't push me as far as it could have. I definitely got some feels from this book, there's a lot of intense moments and a there's a hot fighter that I was pretty into. The feels just weren't the epic feels I wanted to feel. Still, I'll definitely be reading the second book because Rising ended on a high note that has me pretty eager to see what's to come.
For a debut, the writing is pretty solid in this book, but there's some nuances to it that definitely wouldn't let me forget that I was reading a debut, if that makes sense. It's not as polished as it could be. Overall, I'd say that this book is worth the read. It's been a long time since I've read a trilogy so that aspect of it took me back a few years to when romantic trilogies were all the rage.
We are Vincentians
A good cliffhanger always makes me nostalgic for the romances from back in the day when we eagerly anticipated the next book. I'm officially anticipating book 2. I do hope the chemistry between Vincent and Eve is developed a bit more in the next book as I didn't get much in this book, just a taste, just enough to keep me interested. I hope the next book delivers the feels I'm craving.
Jessica Ruben is definitely an author to keep an eye on. If this is her debut, I look forward to whatever she still has in store. The story, the characters, the writing everything was just Perfectly amazing. The plot was very fascinating and enthralled me by wishing more and more taking me deeper into this world.
Maybe in reality, change is actually impossible. Eve has been brought up from a place where seeing the next day or the next hour is a high priority. A mysterious person that somehow woven his way into Eve's life. They were never supposed to happen and yet their path crossed. Muito bom o livro. Pensei que seria um livro desse casal e os outros de outros. Adorei a escrita dessa autora. I love the fact that Jessica Ruben took a lot of my favourite tropes and blended them effortlessly to deliver one unputdownable read. I am practically giddy with excitement. My mind is awash with theories, potential plot lines and excitement with what is to come.
I cannot wait to see where this author takes this story. Our heroine is an innocent eighteen-year-old girl called Eve. Eve is extremely intelligent, studious and quiet, she keeps herself to herself and walks in baggy, hooded clothes to not draw attention to herself. With gangs in the neighbourhood all vying for dominance, the Blue Houses is not a safe place to be and she cannot wait to escape. I am intrigued by her family dynamic, I love her relationship with her sister, but her mother is another matter. The girl with her head in a book at all times.
Loners get picked on and picked off. Jessica Ruben dangles Vincent like a carrot throughout the book and you are the rabbit, frantically chasing it down. Vincent is also known as The Bull; an underground MMA fighter and it is at one of these fights where he first meets Eve. As soon as these two meet, you feel their connection, but Vincent, knowing what his life entails tries to keep Eve at arms-length, but at times it is impossible.
In fact, his face and entire demeanor is absolutely feral. Vincent exudes that chemical attraction to the reader and you cannot help but be drawn into his story and I bet he will top many a BBF list by the end of this book. As I said above, he is certainly the enigma, but in all the scenes between him and Eve, you get to see the real Vincent. The fiercely protective side of him, the side that wants to do the right the thing, the generous, loving side of him and it is this side that has left me frantically wanting more.
Vincent is quite the contradiction and it is the internal war that he fights that keeps him from doing what his heart wants. The ending of this book is in a good place and will definitely leave the reader salivating for the next book, I know I am. These two have so much in common and yet so little. I cannot wait to see where this trilogy goes, I for one will be on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one, bring it on…and quickly.
I cannot recommend this book enough. The beginning started out great; but as soon as Eve met Vincent, I lost all interest. All I saw was a young, naive girl falling in lust for the first time in her life. If there was anything I did love about Eve, it was her ambition and determination to get out of poverty and into an Ivy League school.
I hate that statement with a passion. You know who said those same exact words to me? Douchebags who only wanted in my pants. Because to me, Vincent is all I can see. Insert major eye-roll here. I spent most of it rolling my eyes. Especially if you like elements of MMA, the Mafia, and a dominant alpha hero who more than takes care of what is his.

He treats Eve with a level of respect that every man should emulate. I just love him SO much! Vincent and Eve are about as unconventional a couple as they come, if you can even call them that. Both are very young, at 18 and 21 and I was pleasantly surprised by the slow burn of their relationship, especially given the fact that the book went by so quickly. Sometimes the love feels rushed, but not in this book, I found myself wanting and needing more by the time it was over.

I was completely drawn in and I always gravitate towards stories that are raw and real. Well, you really can't get any realer than Eve. This is by far one of my favorite heroines because she's unapologetically herself! Her circumstances suck but she's trying to claw her way up and out of this life. Without going too much into detail let's just say she doesn't live in a fairy tale. Something happens that utterly devastates and shakes her to her core she knows she had to get out. Just a few months, if she keeps her head down, and her nose in her books she'll make it and maybe she'll no longer be a target.
She is immediately drawn to him. They connect and Eve learns about him, his incredible mind and his beautiful heart. Everything is telling her he's the one and he treats her like she's the only one he sees but there's something he's hiding. Tied in with this story is so much culture which in my opinion is sorely needed in books today I really appreciate the array of backgrounds, ethnicities and social classes depicted.

The Heroine was all right. A virgin of course, and the very experienced Hero liked This book ends in a cliffhanger. A virgin of course, and the very experienced Hero liked this fact very, very much. Living her life in books and wanting to go to college. I wanted her not to be so naive. The Hero was elusive. College student and very rich. They only met for a few times in as many months. They weren't dating or anything. There weren't any promises made. No one fell in love. There was no romance at all.
He just kept appearing from time to time, going out to eat and making out. He was nice I guess. But he had so many secrets, was living a double life. Then there were the girls. Right at the beginning he was seen with a "beautiful redhead". And the scene at the end was well, not hopeful for book II. This book read like a prequel to the main story of those two. It was all right. But I hoped for more. I'm not going to read book II, because I see all these OW drama in the future, and possibly more family drama. Perhaps even a long separation. You know that feeling you would get as a child on Christmas Eve?
You know that giddy feeling, that Santa was coming, and you so desperately wanted to see what he was going to bring you? That overwhelming excitement that made it impossible to sleep? Rising created that feeling in me. In fact, this book has ruined me for all future books. It is so beyond amazing that I find it impossible to think of the right word to describe it, apart from EPIC. I am so overwhelmingly in love with this book, that I cannot physically think of anything else. I just want to relive it time and time again. This year has been a tough one for me. I lost a close family member suddenly in February, and since then my reading has taken a major hit. I have rarely picked up a book since. Jessica Ruben has well and truly changed that. With her book, she has dragged me out of the slump I have fallen into, and filled the void that had taken hold within me. Rising has reminded me why it is that I love nothing more than to lose myself in a book.
I cannot for the life of me recommend this book enough. I have nothing but praise for Jessica Ruben and her debut novel. Rising has taken the top spot on my Best Reads of list, and I have no doubt that is where it will stay. I have said it before, but I would trade my children in for the next book in the series, and I am not even close to kidding!! I will think of nothing else until that book is in my hands.
