The body of a missing fisherman has…. Tennessee Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III today joined a bipartisan group of 43…. If you follow my reviews, then you know that I love historical fiction. This story follows Titus Tribonius, a gastaldus for King Autari, a political post that gives Titus civil, martial, and judicial powers…normally. Rome has been largely controlled by the Lombards, a Germanic faction that swept in and began dominating all aspects of Roman life. The sixth century saw a clash between cultures when Northerners in Europe began to move South.
Along with the sudden introduction of a completely different political mindset came a meshing of religions. Christianity had gained considerable influence in Rome, Roman paganism was often treated as heretical by the ruling Lombards, especially for a government official, and even Norse beliefs found a foothold, often being meshed with Christianity especially in religious symbolism. This massive, turbulent melting pot is the city in which Titus finds himself trapped.

Every two weeks he goes to the market for dairy products, fruits, vegetables and Oreos. If you do, go up and say hello.
And besides, email has proved to be a bridge to friendships for me. In the Sixth Century Italy had been depopulated by plague and laid waste by decades of war. Industry, agriculture, commerce and city life had all stopped. Into this desolation the Germanic Lombards had marched in, meeting no resistance.

Decades later, with things unimproved, a new King appoints To Forestall the Darkness: Just as Roman society is well drawn, so too the culture of the invaders is fully fleshed out. One scene is set in a drinking hall, where the Defectives those with physical or mental defects are set to work polishing shields while the real men get to drink and socialize. We see the demeaning position of the Defectives twice again throughout the novel.
The characters drawn on the opposing German side are drawn with care. The Duke of Verona, Droctolf, is easily manipulated, but he has qualms over the actions he is persuaded to take. He also loves his horse, and insists on tending his horse personally. Queen Theodelinda is beautiful and politically calculating.
To Forestall the Darkness: A Novel of Ancient Rome
While outwardly religious, she is sexually promiscuous. That conflict also gives her qualms and at one point she confesses she would like to be washed of her sins. King Autari tries to be just and seeks to accommodate the Romans, though he must balance his actions against giving offense to the Dukes. Later, the King Designate, Agilulf, finds himself in a similar situation, and fails to act justly in order to appease his peers. Throughout the novel the reader is drawn into lives and conflicts that are heart-felt.

The full characters, the vivid scenes, the striving for a worthwhile goal, all culminate in a conclusion that is shattering. If I could give this novel more than five stars, I would. Lovers of historical fiction set in ancient rome.

Recommended to Vann by: A muse whispered to me. I'm the author, and I can't say more.
To Forestall the Darkness: A Novel of Ancient Rome by Vann Turner
I can't whoopla my own novel. But I will say it is not a paint-by-numbers novel. It is neither a historical romance nor a historical detective story nor a military saga. The setting, the characters and the conflicts arose organically from immersing myself in the period.
