Perhaps one reason why Atoda has not gained an international following is that his writings are very Japanese. The eleven short stories that comprise this collection are intensely lyrical, balancing realistic details with subtle symbolism. They demonstrate a stagger Born in , Takashi Atoda became one of the most important Japanese writers of his generation.
They demonstrate a staggering sensitivity towards nature and human relationships; and in the realm of emotions the author prefers to understate rather than describe. That I cannot shake them off confirms what I suspected all along: Takashi Atoda is a master of the short story.
Often in his stories the past seems to overwhelm the present, and this is achieved by means of flashback as a narrative technique. Now, the flashback device can be a powerful narrative tool, but it can just as easily turn against its user. I have never known a short story writer who used this technique as often as Takashi Atoda without falling into sentimentality. And another notable characteristic of his stories is the way that fantasy and mystery gradually weave their way into everyday events. Often at the end of an Atoda story one is forced to admit that reality has been ruptured, but it is hard to say exactly when one slipped into a dream.

But the knife survives cremation and falls to the floor with a resolute clatter. I cannot guarantee that you will like all of the stories in this collection. But I can promise that each and every story has been beautifully crafted, and that two or three of these gems will linger in your memory for a long time to come. Jun 01, Novia rated it it was amazing Shelves: Takashi Atoda is a genius!! That explain how I feel about his short stories collection called the Square Persimmon and Other Stories. It was more than great!! I have to put down the book after I finished reading one story, NOT because I want to clear my head and prepare for the next story, BUT because all the stories are beautiful and powerful and I want to let it sip into my mind and my heart, let it lingers there for a while before I let in another story to start playing trick on my mind again.

These stories are a true celebration of the appreciation of beauty in small ordinary things and I could feel an inwardly pull from every single one of them. You'll find yourself rereading and reliving these stories in your mind and will be drawn by the faint glow that emanates from these pages and gently sucks you in. The beauty of the prose is such that I felt as if the words had come on the pages almost by magic, and made me recall Sakuta, when he said in 'The Destiny of Shoes' , "It looks as if the petals climbed the trees.

Each story will touch you deep down and it'll be no wonder then if you'll find yourself smelling the faint perfume of great writing every time you'll stumble across this book. I consider myself lucky on read this book for sure and can feel the 'Night Flight' play its tricks always. Wah, how I miss this book. It's the first book I read in english when I'm about 17 or I don't really remember all the stories, but I remember it's quite satyr, typical of japanese literatures, I think.
But I enjoy some stories; the one about an ugly woman whose husband cheated her with his beautiful co-worker and the one about the man who's suspected found the elixir that keeps him young for decades. Most of the stories dealt with the past and memories. Your childhood, your first, your history. Sometimes I don't, or I try not to, think that the past has past. True that the past shaped who you are, but they are gone. But I came to learn more that the past is here. The past, the present, the future. The book contains 11 short stories. They are all very different, with ingenious plots, but all have the feeling of the Japanese "inner life" in them. My only regret is that this appears to be the only English translation of his many collections of short stories.
