What's the meaning of the phrase 'Behind the eight ball'?

Clearly, a citation of the use of the phrase before the the use of an eight ball in the game we now call Eight Ball pool would rule that out as the origin. Of course, there may be some altogether unrelated source. The eight ball isn't specifically named in that game, so it is difficult to see how the phrase might have originated there.

All of the early known citations of the phrase are American. It dates from the early 20th century - the earliest citation that I can find is from the Wisconsin newspaper The Sheboygan Press , December The precise date of the coining of the phrase isn't known. It is a fact that it appears in print many times in American newspapers from December onwards.

I can find no uses of the phrase prior to that date.

Behind The Eight Ball by Craig Furchtenicht

Instead Furchtenich's world and its people display convincingly real motivations and evoke too-real emotions in the reader. I've been a massive fan of Craig's work since I picked up Dimebag Bandits a few years back and cursed myself that I hadn't written a work as fresh and biting as said book. Craig's consistency, skill and creative innovation places him alongside Ryan Bracha as my favourite and the finest of Indie-writers working either side of the Atlantic at present. A great follow-up to Dimebag Bandits and another novel for Furchtenich to be proud of and the rest of us to admire.

Craig Furchtenicht's Dimebag Bandits remains one of my favourite literary discoveries, and I can see it being that for a long time yet. There aren't many that touch him for almost effortless skill in bringing the humour and violence that come with crime fiction. Where others fill their generic fluff with a grizzled whoever, out for justice, ploughing through bit players en route to the top guy, Furchtenicht loves to play with the scumbags. He finds the comedy and tragedy in rock bottom, and the worst part is, I'm not sure he's aware of exactly how good his books are.
