Whilst The Procurer visited Allison, Sophia and Becky in the previous books, the reader never knew much about her, but here she takes centre stage after being contacted by Cameron Dunbar with regard to his missing niece. Kirstin and Cameron, it transpires, have met previously, and shared a night together when the coach in which they were both travelling was damaged.
Six years later, neither is expecting a reunion, although they have never forgotten that night, but the two first need to work together to find the missing Phillippa Ferguson and her maid Jeannie who have gone missing, before they can even think of romance.
Cameron is every bit the tortured hero. Seeing Cameron again puts Kirstin on her guard, as she has a secret that she cannot allow Cameron to find out and it is not the fact she is The Procurer. The mysterious nature of Kirstin is part of what makes her such a well written character, as the reader only really gets to know what she reveals, and it is up to Cameron to break down her barriers as the pair begin to realise that what began as a one night affair could result in a happy ending, if only they could both overcome the obstacles they are putting in the way.
As the stories told to keep up with their roles become more embellished, the more memorable the scenes become, and, if the author ever requires a pair of investigators to pop up in the background of a future story, the re-appearance of the Reverend and his wife would make an excellent addition to any plot.
Naturally, there are some bumps in the road to a happy ending, especially when Cameron discovers exactly what Kirstin is hiding, and her horror when she realises what he knows, but, Cameron gallantly decides to let Kirstin make her own mind up about their future. As a result, the final chapters are beautifully romantic as we watch Kirstin make her decision with a little help from Allison, Sophia and Becky; a scene that connects all four books - although there is no need to have read them, as this works perfectly well as a stand alone story - and helps conclude the series nicely , and the end of the story is perfectly fitting of Kirstin and Cameron as a couple.
Well written, romantic, funny, and dramatic, with some scandalous revelations, and some amazingly described outfits thrown in, this is yet another excellent book from Marguerite Kaye, which I would recommend to everyone who hopes to find love when you least expect it. Finally, we meet the mysterious Procurer! This is book 4 in the series, but apart from a few mentions of past characters mostly, it can be read as a stand alone book. Her next client Cameron Dunbar she finds she cannot allocate anyone else to. For some strange reason, the job to find his niece she finds she must take herself. A very unusual step in her career. But Cameron is an unusual man. Self made, and both from a similar Scots background. But is she finally doomed to fail?
The secrets, meetings and history I unravelled fairly quickly in my mind and so I had a fair idea of what would unfold, but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the story. The ladies meeting at the end was also a nice touch, though I still am unsure what I feel about the scandalous wedding itself. Dec 02, Connie Fischer rated it really liked it. This is the last of The Procurer stories which have been cleverly written. I enjoyed this story most of all. Dec 01, Mary Hart rated it it was amazing. Rey whipped her head up, dropping her hem into the water in her surprise.
On the opposite bank the Duke of Ren observed her from atop his beautiful Arabian horse. I did not see you there. The Duke's face remained impassive as he responded, "Yes I think that is quite obvious.
Improper Match: Scandalous Encounters
Unless of course you make a habit of impropriety when gentlemen are present. Rey frowned, anger creeping in amongst the embarrassment at the insult. Instead you bare your legs in broad daylight where any unsuspecting gentleman might happen upon you. You are quite lucky it was myself who happened upon you and not a less savory man.
Something about this man made Rey forget that he was her better. His arrogance was quite insufferable. The Duke cocked his head slightly. She picked her now soaking hem back up, raising it up to her knees again in her anger. She knew it was a scandalous move, but something about the arrogant Duke of Ren made her forget herself. When she was safely back on dry land, she turned, keeping hold of her hem.
The Duke narrowed his eyes and she watched his throat bob as he swallowed. Suddenly Rey's anger dissipated as she realized that she was showing her legs to the Duke of Ren, a man well above her station, and dropped her hem. I did not give you permission to go out of doors!

Return at once or you'll be spending this Sunday locked in your room! Rey felt her already hot cheeks grow hotter as the flame of humiliation burned its way up her face. Without a goodbye to the Duke she turned and ran back into the house. When she reached it Mr. Plutt grabbed her arm and yanked her through the door.
Plutt said, shaking her. Plutt let go of her arm then, pushing her back towards the interior of the house. What did he do? Plutt called me back inside right at that moment. The rest of the week Rey had spent thinking about the embarrassment she had foisted on herself with her actions. Obviously they did not run in the same social circles and the likelihood of running into the Duke often were very slim, likely no more than passing in the street. But now she would have to live with the humiliation of having made such a scene.
As if Rose had been thinking the same thing she said, "At least you won't have to spend time with him. It's not likely you'll do more than pass him on the street. I'll never live down the humiliation. It will lurk behind me at every chance passing. I don't want to keep Mr. Rose set her cup down and escorted Rey to the door. Waving as she walked down the short lane to the main road, Rey again replayed the scene in her head. What she could not figure out was how she allowed herself to be so easily offended by his remarks.

He had spoken the truth, harsh though it was. Sighing again, she shook her head. What's done was done. When she returned to the house, she was greeted by a grunt from Mr. She immediately grabbed her apron and began helping cook with the evening meal. Shortly after doing so there was a ring of the bell. Rey brushed her hands on her apron and walked towards the door. When she opened it she found a messenger. Rey frowned as she shut the door. Who on earth would be sending her a message. She had only just come from Finn and Rose's home. Plutt grabbed the envelope from her hand.
Plutt ripped the message open, his eyes roving over it before frowning. Rey recoiled in shock. But I don't know any of the family. Why would they invite me? Plutt rolled his eyes at her. How should I know why they're inviting you? Plutt didn't answer her at first, merely grunting in reply as he began pacing, reading the invitation yet again. The story was interesting, but very slow. IF the pace was better and the story tight, then it would have increased my rating. How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It had the making of a good court room drama as well as romance. I thought the court case came up too quickly, instead of creating tension and having some "surprise" testimony that would have been exciting. It was over in just a few pages, but could have been the best part of the story. There were so many lines that kept repeating and his inability to locate the heroine dragged out too long. How does this one compare? Yes, I have heard this narrator before and was the reason I bought the book. She is fast becoming one of my favorites.
If not for her performance this would have gotten a much lower rating.
