When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. This is a story set in the early colonial period of New England. It has the authenticity of a well-researched historical drama, up to and including dialogue delivered in a period accent and vocabulary softened a bit so that it's easy to understand. Instead of drawing on historical events, though, it draws on historical folklore -- it's the story of witchcraft afflicting a family, such as might have been told at the time.

The characters are a very believable, ordinary family, with the sorts of tensions and problems you'd expect from people living a hard and substantially isolated life after being exiled from the local colonial town. They also have period Calvinist attitudes, and the storytelling doesn't present an outsider's view of this or offer a modern commentary, but instead it just displays these attitudes and tells a story from the characters' standpoint.
Their reliance on period folklore means that it doesn't strictly follow modern horror movie tropes, either. This story applies these perspectives. It's very well done in terms of writing, acting, and other aspects of execution, so it might have cross-over appeal to fans of horror, folklore, or straight period drama from colonial America. Share this Rating Title: Like I said, good reference information for beginners, but it's buried in the author's attempt at comedy. Jul 06, Kimi rated it did not like it Shelves: Too focused on wicca-- everything else could be found in other sources.
Also her attempts at humor were cringey. Sep 07, Kristin Barton rated it really liked it. I reviewed this book for a magazine when it first came out.

I admit now, as I did then, that I wasn't expecting much. I thought it sounded very dumbed down. But what I found was, although the book is for abject beginners and is accessible for teens and new adult seekers alike, it's not dumbed down. It's available and simple, yet written by a highly educated High Priestess, and that really shows. This book is not going to go beyond the first doorway to Wicca or Witchcraft, and it's not supposed t I reviewed this book for a magazine when it first came out. This book is not going to go beyond the first doorway to Wicca or Witchcraft, and it's not supposed to do that.
It's the very first book that a very young, inexperienced practitioner might like. There's so much tripe out there for beginners on the path to the Craft that I have to say that this was and is a very nice first book, and a great book for teens interested in Wicca and Witchcraft to read with their parents. There's no tripe here, no misconceptions, and no pandering. It's a solid first exposure to witchcraft for super noobies and I like it as much now as when it was new.
Deborah knows her stuff and knows not to hit beginners with stuff for which they are not ready. Jul 28, Mena rated it it was amazing Shelves: Very fun and informative book! Too often I find myself reading books on the Craft that are jam packed with nothing but information, which I then forget if I don't remember to bookmark it.
Magick should never be boring! Deborah Blake has presented magick to us in an entertaining and informative way. In my opinion, more authors should be doing it this way.

I think this would be a good book for teens to start with since it has actual "normal" magickal practice in it rather than "H Very fun and informative book! I think this would be a good book for teens to start with since it has actual "normal" magickal practice in it rather than "How to achieve the perfect complexion" or "How to get the perfect wardrobe", the sorts of spells you normally see in teen spell books. Nov 28, Heather rated it really liked it Shelves: Deborah Blake is funny and offers some insights into what it's like to be a witch. She runs through some basics of belief, terms, spells, and practices starting from A to Z.

She recommends other books to read, has some funny anecdotes from her cat Magic, jokes, and history. Overall, it's a nice intro to Wicca without being too heavy-handed. Apr 10, Kristina Forsha rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: This book is a great book so don't hesitate to read it. It's more geared towards beginner witches so if your not a beginner you might find it pointless to read it. If you are not a beginner but would like to read it, have at it because it is a wonderful book for any witch to enjoy not just the beginner witches even though that's what it seems more geared towards.
Apr 16, Davienne rated it it was amazing Shelves: Truly enjoyable and super informative. Deborah has a wonderful sense of humor and she made me laugh with her Witchy jokes and personal insights.
