Empower Your Kid

Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them. Our job is not to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. Our job is to raise children who will make the world a little less cruel and heartless. Your kids require you most of all to love them for who they are, not to spend your whole time trying to correct them. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil. Once the emotions have been aroused — a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and the unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love — then we wish for knowledge about the subject of our emotional response.

Once found, it has lasting meaning. It is more important to pave the way for the child to want to know than to put him on a diet of facts he is not ready to assimilate.
