Liar (The Callaway Wilde Series Book 3)

I have the honor of being friend with this amazing author--a friend and one of her biggest fans. I LOVE each one of her books, and each one provides me with a new and wonderful plot each time. Never Say Never to an Earl is a pleasure to read. Emotional, intriguing, heart-pounding, panty-melting, breath-stealing romance. I am still reeling from this st Thank you, Grace, for sending me this book to review.

I am still reeling from this story; not because of the story alone, but also because of some of the themes introduced in the book. I applaud Grace for writing about Bipolar Disorder in a starkly beautiful, honestly hideous way. Because next to nothing was known about this disorder in the late s, the poor hero is treated a criminally insane-worse yet, he thinks there is something wrong with him. Well done, Grace, for describing the disorder in a way that brings the reader into the mind and heart of someone living with it.

Now, the other parts of the book were spectacular, as well. Of course I love reading about all the other characters, their families, and their current lives. I thought that giving Sinjin a heroine who can literally SEE his affliction was a wonderful way to bring depth and intensity to their relationship. As with any other Callaway book, the sex was scorching hot.

I know that with every Callaway book, I'll find myself laughing, crying, panting, and flipping each page until the last. This book did little to assuage my desire for more delicious Regency romances. As a matter of fact it has ramped up my eagerness to read Primrose and Andrew's story. Apr 11, Jamie Lynn rated it really liked it Shelves: Super insecure heroine who thinks she is plain and odd and fat the fact that she is actually goreous and just has big breasts didn't detract from the angst, so she is still going on a couple of trope shelves.

Overheard insult, misunderstandings, tormented hero; this book is right up my alley. Catered to my favorite tropes but still managed to be unique and multidimensional. Interesting historical interpretation of Bipolar Disorder. Only two complaints, the first a minor spoiler I loved this! Only two complaints, the first a minor spoiler view spoiler [Rosie annoyed the crap out of me and the whole "sisterly betrayal" strife was not my thing at all hide spoiler ] , the second a MAJOR spoiler view spoiler [WHY must she lose her ability at the end!?

I found it disappointing that she became "normal" just randomly at the very end, for no reason. Definitely off to see if I can find more of my favorite kinds of heroine! May 19, Phebe rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Grace Callaway clearly gets it. In a historical romance, no less-- I feel affirmed! I usually steer away from paranormals, and was worried that the heroine's aura-sensing abilities would overwhelm a novel that is already taking on a lot with its mental-illness-driven plot.

Actually, she managed to be both incredibly empathetic and believably flawed. It helps that blue is my favorite color, and blue was the color of the hero's projection. And I really wish this novel didn't include a "dead hooker" as a plot point, as it's both trite and harmful to sex-workers. Still, this novel is brilliant, and important for people like me. Callaway is a master of metaphors, and only occasionally does her writing feel overwrought. Heart-rending and hot, if stressful at times. I stayed up until 5am reading this, and it was worth it, for two characters I could relate to.

May 30, Joan Osborne rated it it was amazing. A Rake deserving of a happily ever after Sinjin was a rake deserving of his happily ever after and Polly was his perfect match. My heart just went out to Sinjin for all he had suffered in his life and for Polly too, who had suffered with her own problems. The only complaint I had with the story was the using of the Lord's name in vain which I found offensive and felt was unnecessary.

Vulgar sex words also made it less enjoyable for me and I would rather that they had been omitted. Other than that A Rake deserving of a happily ever after Sinjin was a rake deserving of his happily ever after and Polly was his perfect match. Other than that, I truly enjoyed the story and could not mark it down from five stars to four stars because of my personal distaste for those words even though I was tempted to do so. I don't think using offensive words to be necessary in a romance and hope Grace Callaway will at least consider this in the future as I think she has a great gift for telling romantic tales that touch your heart.

May 25, Ltlmer2 rated it really liked it. Especially when they are not too angsty This one was almost a 5 star for me, but the story went a little off kilter for me towards the end. I wanted to see more of Polly and Sinjin deal with each other after learning of their afflictions and instead the ending was rushed with weird tangents thrown in.

Also, will try to say this without a spoiler, but there was a plot point near the end regarding Polly's affliction that wa 5 stars except for the last bit. Also, will try to say this without a spoiler, but there was a plot point near the end regarding Polly's affliction that was totally unnecessary both literally and figurativelythere was no connection to further plot and I feel it lessened the story and the character at that point. Looking forward to Rosie's story even though she was a bit of a brat in a chunk of this book I really enjoyed Never Say Never to an Earl.

It had a different feel to it yet it was riveting, sensual, fast paced and enjoyable to read. Grace definitely can weave a story that captures the essence of of the time period where you can visualize the scenery, the characters, the mannerisms surrounding that time period to the fashion, well nothing was missed. This was a quick read as I wasn't able to put the book down. To me, this story held everything and thus the 5 stars it easily deserves.

Passionate, intense and romantic: May 09, Lubnaa rated it it was amazing Shelves: Finally, we find out how Polly is so perceptive and turns out that she is able to see people's emotions through their auras. To be honest, I never saw this coming. I always assumed that Polly was just really good at reading people's emotions. I never thought that anything "supernatural" had to do with it.

I was pleasantly surprised though. When I first read a chapter from Sinjin's POV, it took me a while to truly understand his emotional outbursts, or as he liked to put it, his black and blue devils. It was very strange and I originally had a hard time understanding how his emotions worked. Then I realized that he had bipolar disorder. This is actually the first time I've read a book from the POV of a character with bipolar disorder and I think the author did a fantastic job depicting it metaphorically.

The only thing that was lacking in this aspect, in my opinion, is a more profound historical background on mental illnesses during that period. I feel like the author brushed the surface of that topic with only a brief depiction of mental asylums during that time period. Towards the end, I gained an understanding on what triggers Sinjin's episodes, but those triggers were not fully explored. Both Polly and Sinjin accepted that this was part of Sinjin, but neither tried to explore or understand the triggers. Either way, it was very interesting to read about bipolar disorder through the metaphorical black and blue devils.

With her ability to discern people's emotions, Polly had a hard time with Sinjin's aura seeing as how his emotions are more complex than the average individual's. And this is part of the reason as to why she's his perfect mate. I am very happy that Grace Callaway decided to frame her narrative differently in this story. This deviates from the usual patterns in her previous books and it also works out perfectly with the characters. In order for Polly to find out about Sinjin's devils and in order for Sinjin to find out about Polly's ability, the two would need to spend a lot of time in close proximity, the kind that is only possible with marriage.

Thus, allowing them to get married way before the story ends provides the best setting for that emotional and intimate development. It was very hard for me to read about Sinjin's treatment of Polly when he was having his episodes. I understood where he was coming from, but it didn't lessen the hurt. Nevertheless, both Polly and Sinjin learned an important lesson and decided to be honest with each other and help each other out. Sinjin made Polly feel more secure and confident. Polly helped Sinjin with navigating his complex emotions and moods.

For me, personally, I would have liked if the author had explored the latter in depth. I wanted to read about Sinjin and Polly, as a couple, exploring the triggers behind Sinjin's episodes as well as Polly's positive influence on Sinjin while he was having his episodes. I would have only given this book 4 stars, mainly for this reason, but I simply loved Sinjin and Polly so much as a couple that I decided to go with 4.

I do have another issue: Sinjin's father was so fucked up I was very disappointed in her, but I am glad she eventually came to her senses and was aware that she was the one in the wrong, not Polly. Sinjin was not even courting Rosie! He and Polly had every right to kiss lol. Just as a side note: I absolutely loved revisiting the Mayhem in Mayfair characters. I love how all of the GC heroes have cute nicknames for their heroines. I am extremely excited for Rosie's book. Westlake writes of love lost, yet not forgotten in a way that warms the heart and touches the soul. I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful love story and look forward to reading Wicked Liaisons, Book 1. A Highlander's Heart Claire follows her husband to Waterloo in order to apologize for the argument that caused him to leave, Robert, weary of his wife but can they heal their wounds together? I was especially happy to read how Claire and eventually Robert were ready to work on their marriage and hopefully move on.

I'd really love to read the rest of the series and see how the rest of his group fairs. Lord Lucifer's Disciple John's really bad at social situations. So bad that when he finally goes to a masked ball he pretends to be someone else in order to talk to the woman he's so taken by. A case of mistaken identity and introversion. On the one hand I understood John, who doesn't want to pretend to be someone else in order to be more outgoing, but on the other hand, I couldn't see how it would help him in the long run, and I knew how hurt Elisa would be when the whole thing was discovered.

That said, this story really sweeps you up in it. Rooting for each side and switching sides continuously. I really loved it. But when he informs Pippa of that, she'll have none of it. He's met his match, and she'll be the one to show him. And then I laughed some more. What a delicious novella! Oh how I wish it had been slightly longer.

It would have done the Duke some good to grovel a little. So serious about everything, I can only hope that his wife keeps teaching him how to be a little more playful. A life as a companion isn't the issue, but rather her aunt who she works for is. Marcus isn't planning to marry again and he definately isn't going to be trapped by a woman who cares nothing for him, but when he encounters said 'lady's' companion, all bets are off and he hasn't been more interested in years.

And poor Amelia, who couldn't hurt a fly, why would she be treated so badly? From the get-go I coudn't wait for her to be swept off her feet. Marcus may not be very good at asking, but he's the type of good man, which I enjoy reading. Lady Northam's Wicked Surrender When Simon returns from India intended to make Rowena his, he realises the barriers he'll have to face. He'll just have to seduce her back to him. Not only does Simon return but he jumps right into her bed while he's asleep, not even a 'hi, how have you been? For most of the story, i felt completely and brilliantly gobsmacked.

Scandalous Summer Nights by Grace Callaway

If you haven't read this series, you are missing out. They are all great. This book just didn't do it for me. It was just too short for the story to be fleshed out. It had potential - but there was too much left unsaid and it wrapped up way to fast to be believable. The writing was good, but I don't think I will be actively looking for more by this author. All and all - this was an excellent set of novellas and I enjoyed the book and would recommend it Since this book is a compilation of novellas from different authors, I will write my review on each novella from each author.

The Widow Vanishes is the first novella that I read from this author. However, for me the title is not that appropriate in the story. Inspite of that, I am glad that I purchased this book. Callaway surprised me on her writing. Even though it is a short story, she tackled everything.

Being introduced to the starts of these series is a good way to know if I would invest my time in them. I have to say that I really enjoyed each and every one, I'm a big fan of historical romances. All of the novellas have colourful strong characters. ARC courtesy of NetGalley. Seven great reads - all first or prequels in a series and all making me want to read more.

Great mix with everything from Highlanders to Dukes, via widows and virgins, with headstrong heroines and honorable men coming to their rescue. Historical, regency romance and smutty fluff in a great combo. Each story in this collection of series-opening novellas is like a kiss, sexy and satisfying in itself while awakening a longing for more. What an incredible anthology. All the stories are fantastic! I particularly enjoyed Ms. London's so much that I have now read all the Haberdashers series. I couldn't read them fast enough! Can't wait for more!

Jan 05, Annie rated it liked it Shelves: Talk about truth in advertising! You get 6 novellas that are sizzling hot. Sometimes love leads to sex, and sometime's it's the other way around I found the same Americanisms popping up in the dialogue in every novella — something Regency authors in general should really be taking more care with. I liked the premise of this story quite a lot. I would have liked to have seen some more care creating the era there were some very public displays of affection, and sidewalk is a very, very American word. But I definitely enjoy her writing of London street life more than the bedroom antics!

I really loved the one other thing I read by Sabrina Darby, so this was the story I was most excited to read out of the collection. However, the author nearly killed it on the first page. I stopped reading for a few minutes, got over my frustration, and then enjoyed the rest of the story. Darby writes in a way I enjoy. Not too fluffy but also not especially serious, if I want a lighter historical romance this is exactly the kind of style I want to read. Though there were a few too many nasty female characters for my feminist sensibilities, I ended up really enjoying the idea of the story.

I liked the idea of a group of young people forming a solid gang of friends. I liked that their friendships were about more than just who they could sleep with and how fast. However, there was one final thing that nearly sent me batty: But to use it in Regency England must surely be a criminal offence! When desire rekindles between them, they both hope desperately that they can mend their broken marriage … But some wounds go deeper than the concussion Rob suffered on the Waterloo battlefield. I really loved the start and finish of this one, but especially the start. The Battle of Waterloo is one of them.

However, this is one of the only times an author has actually taken me to the battlefield the aftermath, not the battle itself. So I was hooked from the start.

This novella is clearly setting up a series, so the middle was necessary to achieve that task, but we did leave the main relationship for a while why we learnt about this league of Scottish spies… Clearly the author has a preference for Scottish men, because there was more than one comment about how much sexier, more educated etc. I might be interested in picking up the series this novella introduces. Really, really love them, particularly in historical romance where everyone seems to be a Fabio-type, minus the hair.

The relationship moved very, very fast, but then this is a novella. I also liked that the characters had interests and pasts and ideas about their futures. Really, my only issue was with a comment about bathing that popped up in the middle of the wedding night scene and totally killed the atmosphere! To this day, she relived that horrid moment, agonising over every humiliating detail.

His blank, slightly horrified expression as Mr Tisdale had introduced them. Then finally, his curt dismissal as he turned and walked away, in front of everyone. Kate McKinley manages to have hers out first, so I guess that counts for something! Because of this, the story has to happen in a condensed fashion. I did like the first few pages and how we were introduced to the characters. It immediately highlighted their differences in class and social standing.

Of course, the story being condensed also means the characters are getting a little intimate from very early on. In this case, yes, our hero was still a bloody duke! However he was fifty-two to a heroine who was heading towards thirty. I thought it was an interesting change, and I enjoyed reading about both characters.

It fell apart towards the end partly because there were too many characters but mostly because the main two turned into porn stars. They lost their personalities and did things that — for a virgin in Regency England — just seemed outrageously anachronistic… I would, however, be interested in trying something else from this author.

It was mostly a collection of bedroom scenes with a few conversations in between. This is definitely a plot that deserved a much longer word count, because it has the potential for lots of angst, rather than a drama spanning many years being resolved with one conversation in a story covering a couple of days. As I said, the premise is great.

I love reunion stories perhaps more than any other kind. I wonder what the author could have done with this in a full-length book. Just as long as she keeps that evil word snuck out of Regency England from now on! Review copy provided by NetGalley. Aug 26, Cas H. I really liked this anthology!

Scandal Before Sunrise by Sabrina Darby is a delightful love story between a second son, and a woman who was accused of a scandal two seasons earlier. Abigail has just returned to London.

This will be her second season. She left her first season partway through and never returned the following year. A scandal plagued her attentions. Elliot Jones, who is referred to as Jones, wants to seduce Abigail. He thinks she is sweet and nice, and likes that scandal has touched her before because he does not believe she is a virgin and he has convinced himself that he wants her in bed, without marriage. Abigail's family is touched with scandal adding to her own scandal, and this could make her a pariah in London, who is no longer welcomed anywhere.

She must marry before the truth of these scandals reach the ears of the people of London. This was a wonderful book, a well developed plot. There was one scene involving a seduction that went a too far to make this book just kissing. I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars. A Highlander's Heart by Jennifer Haymore was a wonderful love story. He has resigned himself to being a soldier, and of never being able to be with his wife again. He does love her very much, and has remained chaste, he made a promise to his wife, that she would be his only lover, and he has kept that promise. Now Claire and Robert are reunited, by her willingness to go to the Battle on the Continent and make amends with her husband. She does not know how close he was to death until she has to wade through blood, and bodies littered across the field at the Battle of Waterloo. She knows Robert is in their and she dreads finding out that he is one of the dead.

The last time they spoke, she spoke very harshly to him, and she wants to make amends. Claire and Robert have to overcome the problems of the past and start a new future, a future that may include being separated forever. They must decide what the important things are, and they must decide together. I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.

I really like this book and I rated this book 4 out of 5 stars. Lord Lucifer's Disciple by Sue London has been mis-titled. I read the title and thought, oh my goodness, this book is all about sin, and drawing the readers to a life of sin. It is not that at all. Lord Lucifer is the author of a book which John Howards, one of the main characters gets from the book store. The title is Lord Lucifer's guide to pleasuring the fairer sex.

The author shares with us snipbits of this guide, with quotes from the author Lord Lucifer. It is basically a guide on how to woo a girl. John Howards is an incredibly shy person, he does not like going to parties and is excited when he gets a book that can help him become more outgoing.

He uses this book, dresses up for a masquerade party and ends up becoming more free then he can ever imagine. Elisa is a young lady who must marry before her next birthday, she has been encouraged to find true love, but if she does not find it, then a match will be made for her. At the masquerade, they meet and John behaves like a rake who is used to the pleasures of the fairer sex. Elisa falls in love with Casimir, and wishes to make a match, but Casimir, who is really John, cannot make a match of it when it is based off a lie. John sets out to make everything right, he wishes to make a match with Elisa, but she won't have it.

She only sees the boring John and not the outgoing Casimir. John must change her perception of him, and win her heart, if Elisa will let him. This book was super sweet and John being the perceptive person he was, was refreshing. I did not feel that the meeting that was scheduled for the night of the ball should have gone as far as it did. He was a stranger, and she gave all her trust to him. I felt that the book would have been good, even if they just kissed in that scene with noting more.

I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars. How to Lose a Duke in 10 Days is a page turner that you won't want to put down. Lucas is the Duke who will do whatever he needs to do to get what he wants. He is ruthless to a fault and now he has set his sights on Pippa. Pippa is the daughter of a tradesman who is satisfied with her station in life.

She does not care to raise her status among the ton so when the Duke offers her marriage, she turns it down. Every day she must come up with new ways to get rid of the Duke and make him rescind his Betrothal Ball announcement which was placed in the papers. This book is not only funny, but is a scandalous, shocking, steamy, sexy and wonderfully written tale of what love can be. This story is about a girl who becomes a companion for her Aunt, because her father has died leaving her a spinster of 28 with no prospects.

Amelia must conduct herself with the propriety expected of a lady. She must remain in servants quarters because she is the companion, and not allowed with her aunt unless her aunt invites her to join in.

    Invisible Ellen

This Aunt is dreadfully mean and Miss Amelia only remains with her because she has no place other than a woman's work house to go to, so she remains. On one particular outing, Amelia is avoiding her Aunt, and all the goings on and she wanders into a maze and meets a kind Sir. She does not know until that night, after he kisses her that he is the Duke. The Aunt has her sights set on the Duke and fires Amelia as her companion after she witnesses the Duke and Amelia kissing. I thought this book was really sweet. Age doesn't matter in this book, only love and I love that concept.

Lady Northem became a Countess 6 years prior when she married a Count. He died and she is left a widow. Before she married the count, she had her sights set on Simon, but when he did not write her after his year long absence, she finally consented to marry another, Simon's best friend. Simon left 6 years ago, to India, and has not returned until this day. When he hears her thrashing in her bed at night, calling his name, he goes to investigate, and starts to make love to her. Their love was lost years ago, but could be re-kindled, if only they knew the secret that each one held.

The secrets must be revealed in order for their relationship to bloom, otherwise it will die. I thought this book a wicked delight, I would love to have read a longer tale, but this short one will have to do for now. I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars She is also at the mercy of a menacing cutthroat. Now the only way to pay off the monstrous sum is either death or selling her body. William McLeod is a former soldier that has left both his privileged family and his regiment behind him. He is offered one night with a tempting wench and instead of just slacking his lust he finds a passion beyond compare.

Annabel and William are on opposite sides of a cat-and-mouse game.
