This book, with its learn by doing approach, is a great companion to anyone wiling to get the most out of the penguin, unleashing the true power of Linux and taking control of his machine and its services through the command line. There are excellent books to learn about what happens under the hood see the suggested books down, at the bottom.

In this title, Christopher gives the readers an accurate and comprehensive coverage of the commands to take control of the many different aspects of the operating system: Among them, I have particularly enjoyed the chapters dedicated to the file system management, which covers everything, from mounting and unmounting up to creating virtual and encrypted file systems. And their maintenance, of course. For each command presented, the author does not show all the possible options and flavors. He does instead present the good ones, those that you want to save as an alias in your bashrc or jealously somewhere safe.

A very good book. Certainly one of the best cookbooks out there. Definitely recommended to power users. Not to sys admins though: Moreover, the topics covered are probably way too easy for any seasoned admin out there. Linux Shell Scripting Cookbook: A must have for anyone interested in understanding how the system works. As usual, you can find more reviews on my personal blog: Sep 26, Charles rated it really liked it.

Some mention of software is now a little out-dated, but the command line lessons are still current.

I had a lot of fun trying out all the commands with a pull-down terminal like guake while reading along. Jun 25, Matthew rated it liked it. I long for a world without Microsoft. This book helps us all get a little closer to that dream. Marcos Santamaria rated it really liked it Feb 07, Paul Guttmann rated it really liked it Mar 17, I liked the first edition very much and bought the second edition as well to be sure I had not missed any corrections or additions. While I have not compared the two editions to see what changed, I am, nevertheless, glad I added the second to my collection.

This is not a work to be read from front to back as a novel, it makes a great random-browse book as well as a problem solving book when confronted with a specific need for information on the Ubuntu OS or related matters. So many works seem to be a mixture of fluff and hype, it is a real pleasure to sit down with a book that is quietly competent.

This is a great question-answering reference and useful source not only for "How-to", but also "What options do I have", and it does its job with clarity and clear explanations where such are appropriate. I had some question when I ordered the second edition as to whether I would be wasting my money, already having the first edition on hand. Now, I am glad I did, indeed, buy the second edition I am a "happy camper"!

This is one of the best books you can get for Debian Linux commands.

Ubuntu Linux Toolbox: 1000+ Commands for Power Users, 2nd Edition

I use it almost everyday. No it doesn't have them all, but it has quite a few. There is no way I can remember all the commands. I have Linux on three different computers and and they are all Debian based distributions.

Description

I have other books, but this is probably my favourite. I stopped buying books for various distros after they started releasing new versions constantly. Buy a book for version 8 of some flavour of Linux and in no time, version 9 is out, and then version 10, version I try to buy books that contain what pretty much stays the same. This Linux toolbox book is one of them.

One person found this helpful. This an excellent book filled with specific tips for optimizing your ubuntu system. It is poorly organized but has a great section on the editors vi. In ord er to use many of the "tools," the user must crossfire each command with the man pages or an other linux book. The authors spend very little time explaining the concepts of each tip but rather ues every page to introduce more tips and hacks.

This good, as a matter of fact. Because it is a very complete volume in a very small and easy-to-carry. All of the tips are quite appropriate for virtually any linux distro and there is a heavy encouragement of console-based tools rather tha n the GUI based ones that are s common in ubuntu. I ould even say that this book is essential to the effective use of ubuntu. I love this book.

Contains the information I need most. The book is just the right size to carry around. My favorite topic is filesystems This book shows you the commands to format, mount, backup. Software Raid, LVM, loop mounting It does a good job and covers nearly everything in a concise, no nonsense, manner. It's the perfect Linux handbook. I use Debian and find it suitable. If you use Red Hat, most will apply, except for the package management section, etc.

Ubuntu Linux Toolbox: + Commands for Power Users, 2nd Edition - O'Reilly Media

I use Debian primarily yet I find this book quite useful from time to time. The main emphasis of the book is how to do things from a command prompt instead of using a GUI. I think it may be kind of out of date for Ubuntu, but for Debian with a longer release cycle it is still "new" enough most of the time.

Well written and pretty detailed. This book goes into a lot of detail on how to install the OS, which isn't very useful considering Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, etc. Not your usual command list alphabetical order reference. I think I like the approach the author has taken.

Well worth the price of admission. If your familiar with Debian or Ubuntu but don't know the command line that well, this is the text for you.
