Please try again later. Tobias Campion has settled in and made his place secure as the rector of Moreton St. Even though his life had previously been one of wealth and privilege Tobias felt a sincere calling to become a servant of his Maker. The poor are always on his mind and he spends his days trying to make their lives more comfortable.

Lady Chase is now widowed and she returns to Moreton Hall to await word of the search she is conducting to find her son, Hugo, Viscount Wombourn, who has been missing since the battle of Talavera in No word has been heard from him since he went missing from the battlefield, but his mother is sure he is still alive. Into this scene comes a stranger who is found dead in a swollen stream. No identification is possible and there are no clues as to why he was in the area until a newspaper advertisement regarding a reward for information about Viscount Wombourn is found in the man's boot.

There are plots and sub-plots aplenty in this very well written mystery taking place in in this rural English neighborhood.

I really enjoy the way Judith Cutler writes her historical novels. I like seeing how the society is divided and the extremes that each level goes to to keep it that way. It is obvious that the author had done much research so she not only puts the characters in their proper historical positions, but she also gives them life so they become people, not simply characters.

This novel has several different mysteries going on at once but by the ending of the book they have all been made to dovetail into one complete story. The only reason I have not given this novel a full five star rating is because of the editing. I thought at first that some type of regional method of speaking was taking place when I would struggle so much with particular sentences. No, it turned out that it was simply very poor editing. Many, many words are omitted, there are many times when singular words should have been plural, and several times when the wrong character name was used.

It made for a distraction which took me away from what was happening in the book and made me focus on something which should never have been a factor. My copy is the paperback edition published in It really is a shame that something which could have been so easily corrected had to interfere with my enjoyment of this novel. I cannot wait for the next Tobias Campion novel! Cutler is developing her characters with depth and breadth and inner dimensions as well, including the complex relationships amongst them all.

It is a joy to spend many quiet hours with them! I am extremely leery of Regency-period novels, but this series rings true and actually invites us into what the real experience of living in the 's might have been like for the individuals who people Campion's world. And yes, Miss Cutler, I am well aware that "Mr. Campion" might well be construed to be a possible distant if only collateral ancestor of the beloved Albert. I am not going to give a brief synopsis of the plot here; what is already on this page is sufficient. What I do want to express, however, is that for the very discerning, demanding, and critical reader of historical mysteries, this is one you really have been waiting for!

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This is a terrific read, even better than the first Campion book. Ms Cutler really keeps you on your toes wondering "who dunnit".

Buy for others

I sincerely hope that she continues with this series as I have noticed that there are several others which seem to only consist of two or three books. I would highly recommend this book, very engaging characters. Pleasant summer reading and a glimpse into how people lived during those times. I am waiting for more - I love this sort of story. Set in England in days gone by, you get a real sense of the history as well as good plot.

Shadow of the Past

The characters are believable and I can't wait for some more. Excellent regency mystery, this is the second Tobias Campion book and I have enjoyed both books immensely, nice twists and turns and a very interesting hero. He is fortunate in that the widowed Lady Chase is like-minded in her concern for the poor, as well as the wife of his good friend, Dr.

But once again, murder becomes his additional concern as a dead body is found and the governess who first discovered the body disappears on the same day. Campion is not a natural sleuth.

The Rev Tobias Campion (Judith Cutler}

He really is just trying to find his way in his calling, but he does have the desire to seek justice and help his flock, and he has the much more skilled help of Dr. Hansard, and Hansard's colleague who is particularly skilled with post-mortems, and Tobias' resourceful servant, Jem. This mystery was puzzling in aspects, and remained a little strange even after the denouement, but the perpetrator was somewhat obvious to me at least toward the latter half of the book.

I did like Tobias being an extremely amateur sleuth. He truly hasn't much experience or skill or even a love of mysteries at this point, and he may never. Surely she has not had a hand in his death?

When it transpires that the man might have been bringing news of Lady Chase's missing son, Tobias is forced to quit the village to uncover the truth. Unfortunately, many of those he encounters in his travels are equally determined to keep the past well hidden You can download Apple Books from the App Store.
