A Cambridge historian of the old school, Coulton's book is really only "informal" in its shortness around pages.
It does not serve well as an introduction to concepts or chronology of the period, though it is certainly an interesting and even fun read. Each chapter treats a different Medieval subject--village life, monasticism, chivalry, etc.

Some of the details, culled from larger works of Coulton's which he refers to in footnotes, are quite interesting, such as his recounting of typical village legal infractions and their resulting fines. But such details make up most of the work, meaning that its focus is too close and specific for it to function as the generalist overview or survey of the era its title might lead you to expect.
The chapter on chivalry in particular is a disappointment, since it almost entirely consists of long passages from Froissart and de Joinville. My favorite portion of the book was the last chapter on the popular religion, which develops an intriguing contrast between the official policy and practices of the Christian church and the determined worship of the laity, especially as it is expressed in the poem, Piers Plowman.
This chapter is well worth rereading on its own. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This was more a general history of the Christian Church than a general history as it purports to be. While I realize that the church was very important, the feudal system got only about three paragraphs of attention.
