In order to save her daughter, she concoc This is definitely a sad retelling of Galatea's mythological tale. In order to save her daughter, she concocts a plan that would break their chains from the innumerable torment. Beautifully told, Miller injects impressive imagery and adapts the ancient tale to question the ideology of "beauty" and the "ideal woman" that is reminiscent of modern society. As we dive deeper, it also parallels women's collective experiences in a patriarchal society, all with its triumphs and failures, the path to overcome all odds and challenge the status quo, and finally, bring forth light in the midst of unspeakable darkness.
Nov 02, Sofia rated it it was amazing Shelves: Galatea - the stone woman I think what is fixed in stone is not Galatea but the belief that a human being has a say over what other human beings are, over what they do and how they should look. THAT belief is what we and me particular as a woman, bang my head against all the time. The belief that tries to shape my life, either by trying to make me malleable to fit in the shape created for me by others or by the opposite reaction it creates in me of anger at such presumption.
Beautifully and cleve Galatea - the stone woman I think what is fixed in stone is not Galatea but the belief that a human being has a say over what other human beings are, over what they do and how they should look. Beautifully and cleverly told by Ms Miller. How we weave woman weave ourselves through the opposing forces against us and the love that holds us up and makes us continue. Steinfrau Stone Woman , - Meret Oppenheim Dec 06, Corrie rated it really liked it Shelves: The Pygmalion myth retold from the viewpoint of Galatea , the statue made flesh.
Aug 11, Krista Baetiong Tungol rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a depressing short story to read on a gloomy Friday morning. The problem with Pygmalion is that he never really saw Galatea past his own beautiful stone statue; for him, she was merely an object of his desire, an ideal figure meant only to be revered and lusted upon. He did not wish for her to have a voice or be her own person, and in the end his obsession and over-assertiveness proved disastrous to them both.
Miss Miller has given us this particular tale in Greek mythology which is one of my favorites, actually a different but satisfying adaptation. It also somewhat offers an insight to understanding obsessive love: Overall, Galatea is insightful, tragic, hauntingly beautiful, and deserving of praise and four complimentary stars.
Jul 12, Smitha rated it really liked it Shelves: A short novela about a stone statue coming to life. But it is not happily ever after.. And sometimes I feel if Galatea were real it would have been this version of her life that happened, rather than 'happily ever after'. Aug 15, Christin rated it it was amazing Shelves: I loved it And yes it was hella short and I always want more from Miller but you know what Anything else would be padding.
Jul 18, teavious rated it really liked it. Beautifully written, and Madeline Miller's twists are always such a pleasure to read. Galatea's myth is also one of my favourites so this was great! View all 4 comments. May 07, Izzy rated it really liked it Shelves: Madeline Miller has a way to make her words feel soft and harsh at the very same time. If anything, the downside of this was that it was too short — I wanted to see more of Galatea and her thoughts, her life, not just her ending.
Nevertheless, this was amazing. I honestly can't wait for Miller's next book. Aug 16, Konstantin rated it really liked it. I fell in love with Miller's writing, and I just love her economical, intentionally modern writing style - in combination with ancient myths it certainly is a bit odd, but works amazingly well. I think I'll be reading her novels as well. Sep 26, Leah Craig rated it it was amazing.
This is short but very, very satisfying. May 08, kerrie rated it really liked it. What a wonderful little ebook. Perfect for a quick afternoon read. This short retelling of the myth of Pygmalion, but from the perspective of the sculpture he carved and fell in love with was captivating and eerie. The power of Madeline Miller's way with words and capability of storytelling. May 23, Daniel rated it it was amazing Shelves: I've always had a deep fascination for Greek mythology and this was everything i could have ever asked for. Super excited to read Circe soon! May 16, Teresa rated it liked it Shelves: This very short story is a reimagining of the myth of Galatea, and was Madeline Miller's contribution to the myth anthology xo Orpheus: Pygmalion is such a controlling, abusive shit so Galatea needs to save her daughter from him.
I like how Miller plays with reality in this book, because after reading it I can't decide whether Galatea was brought to life by a goddess or destroyed mentally by her husband.
