Still, it's worth reading and it keeps the reader wanting to find out what happens to the characters next. Wouk uses the general formula of his great World War II novels to give a lesson on heart, hope and resolve. In this book, as in his earlier war novels he teaches the sad truth of humanity and its inhumane tolerance for capital gain though racism, nationalism and fear.

In all of this are woven vignettes of love, with humor and intrigue. The story is gripping and interesting, and it is sad to see it end. Thank goodness for sequels. Historically correct, The Hope is interesting reading. Sadly, the hope of peaceful coexistence seems as far today as it was in the middle of the twentieth century. The Hope is hard plodding by comparison. Maybe an unfair comparison An exciting account of the founding of the nation Israel.

Wouk puts you there in the middle of it. If you are a Jew it will make you feel proud; if you are not you might wish you were. I have read both books twice-- as I have done with most of Wouk's books. This is not quite as good, to this reader, as Wouk's "War and Remembrance" but it is along the same vein.

  • For that reason this reader gave it 4 out of 5 stars. This lengthy book interweaves fictional characters into the actual history of Israel's birth and struggles for the first 20 years.
