The stag and the boar fade away, and soon the woman regains consciousness. The woman declares herself the boy's mother, and that her name is Branwen and his is Emrys. Years later, Emrys finds that he has magical powers and eventually uses them to defend Branwen against a terrorizing bully who is trying to burn her at the stake. Tragically, he accidentally sets a tree on fire which collapses on a boy whom Emrys tries to save and fails. Emrys, in his attempt to help the boy, goes blind from the fire, but learns to see through a visual " second sight ", after swearing never to use his powers again.

After learning to sense well enough to be mobile, Emrys leaves Branwen at the monastery where he had been treated for his burns, and sets out to find his true home. Emrys builds a raft and floats all the way to the magical and mythical island of Fincayra, which is somewhere between heaven and earth, also called the "in between," place, with only the bag of herbs his mother gives him and the Galator, which is a beautiful gem whose powers are described as "vast beyond knowing". There he meets Rhiannon, a girl of the druma, who seeks his assistance in stopping the terrible blight which is now beginning to kill the forest she lives in.

Emrys initially refuses, intent on discovering who he is and regaining the lost memories of his childhood, but when the two are attacked by goblins and Rhia tricks them into kidnapping her instead of him because he won't use his powers to save them both, he vows to save her. Along with a dwarf-sized giant, Shim, Emrys sets out to the Shrouded Castle to rescue her. He learns, from a wise bard named Cairpre, that Branwen really was his mother, but her real name is Elen. He also learns his father serves the king and was turned evil by the troublesome Rhita Gawr, a spirit who wants to control Fincayra before moving on to Earth.

Cairpre suggests that he visit the dangerous wagerer Domnu, who may be able to help them reach the castle.

TA Barron is an amazing story teller and clearly has real esoteric knowledge that he is weaving into his tale of Merlin. These books will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder for the magic that lives in this world and is born out of our hearts. Do yourself a favor and enjoy them! One person found this helpful.

Read the series once before back in middle school. Never finished it so I decided to start again. Light enough for a child but exciting enough to entertain, especially if you enjoy mythology. One of my favorite series of all time. Barron fills in the gap in the history of the great wizard. How did Merlin gain his powers? What was his childhood like? The series stands the test of time, I discovered the series as a young boy, and revisited as an adult in my twenties.

I enjoyed it just as much as I did as when I was a child. Book is in excellent condition, as described. Happy with the product. Excellent book really keeps you engaged and wondering whats going to happen next. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. My son loves these books. Had to read book 1 for 7 th grade summer reading and is making his way through the rest now. In all honesty I never really liked to read but my first deployment I found one of TAB books and it sacked me in so much I own a few of them now and I started reading these ones for this deployment and just like the others they are great can't wait to read the rest.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I would love to give this book five stars, but honestly, it had me so frustrated throughout most of it that I can't. Stick to the main characters please. We don't need a POV from every random character in the book. I understand that the characters stories all intertwined somehow, but it just made me frustrated and wondering, "Who is this?

The Heroes of Olympus – Rick Riordan

Why do we need a chapter from their POV? Lies and near misses made me so frustrated. Max, Ember, and Yrlissa should have gone off on their own to find Kael and left everyone else behind.

Kyah was way too good to be true. I suspected her of ulterior motives from the beginning of the book Why did everyone believe her lies and not call her on it when conflicting stories came about? I can't even express how frustrated and upset I am. There must be some way back for that character Overall, the story was written well, if confusingly.

The author always writes a good story to follow along with. I'm awaiting the next book, hoping the author redeems himself for this book. Honestly, I want to give the book one star.

The Merlin Saga

It took frustrating to a new level. And not one I enjoyed. Getting Kael and Ember close once or twice but not reuniting, ok. Doing it throughout the whole book was pure crap that drove me mad. And the ending was what the crap! You obviously have a direction the story is going but after this constant almost yet not quite together again stuff I'm just irritated.

And there is so much crap not answered. I have too many questions. More than I want. I just feel defeated after this book. A lot of independently published books do not have the kind of scope and scale that JD's books do. The world building in this series is absolutely incredible which is exactly how an epic fantasy series should be!

There are too few books like this in the world! I was lucky enough to read the first book then right away read the second. The main characters seem realistic in their antagonism of each other, which I found was a great way to push the plot along and promote the idea that you really don't know who is right and who is wrong in this world. It's not really a surprise, but it's satisfying as the characters true selves begin to be revealed by their actions.
