This is an enjoyable mystery set in rural Alaska. He returns to his Native village as a newly trained trooper and becomes more acquainted his biological family.

The best thing about this novel was the Alaskan setting, the ways in which people go about their lives in this remote location, and the destabilising effect that the arrival of alcohol has had on the native population. The police investigation provided a bit of diversion but ultimately I found it hard to follow or get worked up about.

He is pretty much accepted by the other villagers but he longs to be in Anchorage where life is not so hard. Nathan solves a murder and gets to know some of his people better. It was interesting to read about the villagers and their customs.

The characters are engaging and the plot is packed with suspense. Jones captures the despair and hope of a community on the fringe of civilization and the wrong side of the socioeconomic divide.
