No fail happening here. I bought this for the manga-styled cover, but the story is wonderful--a coming of age tale featuring a spoiled young goddess named Amira is given a second chance to make the right decision. Okay, I admit it, her wise and brave companion, the turtle M'lan just kept reminding me of Gamera. Be that as it may, I want one! Apr 22, Jasmine Villanova rated it really liked it. It was really good. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down. It was a very unique story.

Amira kinda bothered me at first. She was a little bratty. By the end I liked her. She was willing to risk herself for people she just met. At first she was just looking for adventure. Eventually she realized there was more to life than adventure. Raiden was really cute. The whole Raiden Kaifu thing was incredibly confusing. It made sense and it was a nice twist but I was incredibly confused.

M'lan was seriously my favorite character. I want my own flying magical tortoise.

Its an all ages tale that captures the spirit of Chinese mythology well. At first I wasn't sure I liked Amira because she was so bratty but her eagerness and playfulness reminded me of the monkey king.

She really learned to care for others towards the end.

I spent some time on a humanitarian trip working in a small village in Indonesia, and came home with an idea to write about my experiences there.

When in college, I spent a semester abroad living in Taiwan and researching the grave sites and Buddhist temples there. I drew from that experience for some of the background for The Power of Powers, which begins in the mystical Mogao Grottos at the end of the Silk Route in China. The whole class looked forward to the wonder of this trip. So we piled into old school buses and bounced our way downtown. At the factory, the tour guide took us through the exciting world of bread-making. We watched flour and ingredients poured into giant knead. It had snowed during the night, but not pretty, fluffy mid-winter snow. February snow is always wet and slushy. The clouds hanging low over the city still tried to drop more snow, but the air had warmed just enough to turn it all into sticky sleet that splattered on my window, and piles of dirty slush on the ground turned the world into grey boredom.
