Apple River Hiking - Apple River Canyon State Park

Romance on the River Short Story Book 0. View More by This Author. Description This short story prequel by bestselling author Mary Ellis provides an early glimpse into the life of Quaker Emily Harrison. I'm not sure we saw what we were supposed to on Tower Rock - eventually we hit a sign that said "Trail Ends" - but it looked like it kept going, We followed the sign and at the split went down River Route.

This was probably my favorite of the bunch - you do have a fairly steep decent, but eventually get down along the river. We returned to the parking lot and tackled Pine Ridge next. This was a short loop through the woods - not a ton of scenery, but a fairly easy hike and quite peaceful. Down East Canyon Road are the trailheads for the last two.

Primrose Natural Trail is a bit odd - you start by climbing a set of stairs, then you're on a flat, easy trail that heads passed the camping sites it's like looking into the campers "backyards" Once you get past that, you descend back down and hit a nice little picnic grove in the canyon along the river. The river access isn't as great as River Route, but it's still nice.

The final trail is Sunset. This loop is similiar to Pine Ridge - you ascend along East Canyon Road, then eventually loop back into the woods and come out where you started. Again, the scenery is modest, but the trail is nice and quiet. Definitely spend the time to tackle River Route and Primrose. Really, you can see them all in a morning, but that would be the priority. Enjoy the scenery and wildlife as you float Share and enjoy the time with family and friends.

I have written 2 reviews for Apple River Canyon already, one about 2 years ago and another close to 6 years ago. At this point we have been to the park about 35 times in the past 10 years, most trips were around nights avoiding weekends. Stays have been as short as 1 night and up to 13 or When we first started going there, it was exactly what we wanted; nearly no amenities, quiet, rustic camping in private wooded sites. Then a few years later it was featured in a segment about the Galena area aired on the Chicago News which ruined the park for the rest of the year with many rowdy, rude and loud groups , but did bring in needed revenue and promptly returned to a peaceful place the following year.

Fast forward another few years I believe the park went up on Reserve.

The host stays in the one electric site the park already had but oddly they are on the first come-first serve loop and not the reserve loop. While I have camped mostly off season since the host arrived, I have camped a few times while the hosts where there. It is clear that the host can make or break the experience for me at least. The host they had in was pleasant, kept the areas clean, was friendly but not intrusive and quiet. In however it was a whole other story read my last review to hear the whole story.

This year, my husband and I have been there twice for a 1 night stay each early May and it was very enjoyable! It was like the old days when we first found the park. We got there Saturday at about 4pm and the park had maybe 20 sites full, everyone was pretty spread out and quiet, and by the time we left at 2pm the next day the park was empty.

Some families, like the Flacks, the Howards, and Lawhorns and others took up residence in nearby cabins. The Murdock family already resided in a homestead near the new fort. One of the more complete later descriptions—and the only one to mention the blockhouse in detail—is found in the post-Black Hawk War text The History of Jo Daviess County:. Trees were felled, and dragged to the area to be enclosed. A three foot trench was dug along the proposed stockade line. In the opposite corner, was built a " block house ," of two stories, with the upper story most likely constructed on top of an existing agricultural outbuilding.

The second story projecting over the other about two feet, so that the Indians could not come up near to the building for the purpose of setting it on fire, without being exposed to the guns of the settlers, from above. On one side of the yard were two extant long cabins, for dwelling purposes, and in the two corners not occupied by houses, elevated benches were built into "bastions" or outward projections in the log wall.

These were made to stand upon and reconnoitre.

The group, unable to determine the veracity of the tale, hired an archaeologist to determine the location of the old frontier fortification. The archaeological digs and investigation at the site were led by Floyd Mansberger of Fever River Research, in consultation with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency , during the summer of Subsequently, the research team "lightly disked" the site to perform a "controlled surface collection.

The items retrieved during the collection strongly suggested that occupation of the Apple River Fort site occurred during the early 19th century, probably not extending beyond , and was short-term.
