More tragedy followed when Garry was killed in a racing accident in However, a trip to the TT races in inspired him, and he decided to compete there, with his first win in the TT Formula 2 Race on a Yamaha. It was the start of one of the most successful TT careers in history, and ''Hizzy'' went on to win 11 times on the most dangerous race track in the world, riding into the history books in when he became the first man to set an average lap speed of over mph.
He had many memorable battles during his tremendous TT career with such biking legends as Fogarty, Joey Dunlop and Phil McCallen, and became a popular and often emulated modern day hero of the mountain circuit. But he proved the doubters wrong by lifting the cc British championship in , and the British Superbike championship in Hailed as a flawed genius and by his peers as the fastest man ever to sit on a motorcycle, Hislop was plagued with bad luck over the next seven years as injuries, sackings and team bust-ups repeatedly ruined his championship hopes. Regularly drawing more crowds than any other domestic motor racing series in Britain, British Superbike fans were captivated by Hislop's quest for the second title.
While so many of his fellow domestic riders took the step up to international racing, for Hislop the delights of Knockhill were a match for anything Barcelona or Kuala Lumpur could offer. But he did enjoy rare outings on a global stage as a wildcard in the British rounds of the World Superbike Championship. He stayed on, with many expecting him to rule the domestic roost for the foreseeable future.

It did not turn out like that and Hislop was forced to play second fiddle to a string of up-and-coming young guns who saw the series as a stepping stone to greater things. He never lost the knack of winning, however, and his presence was part of the reason that Britain became the premier training ground for young talent.
Hislop suffered two horrific accidents that would have ended a lesser rider's career. In , he crashed at Brands Hatch but carried on racing, only to find out later he was riding with two broken vertebrae in his neck. He felt he had been given a second chance at life and set about winning the Superbike title with a new-found.
