The Briery Gap is vital for the nurture and development of drama, music, dance etc in the Lee Valley, but, with no national funding, it's a constant challenge to keep the doors open.

He also thanked Macroom and District Lions Club and Kilmurry Historical Society who have come on board to sell tickets for the opening night and for Saturday, April 27, making these shows gala occasions, with pre-show cheese and wine receptions. Brendan O'Brien spoke of the great talent of Director, Kevin Hough, from whom the cast can learn an enormous amount.
He underlined the importance of theatre in the community. Macroom has a marvellous facility in the Briery Gap and he promised that South Pacific would be a wonderful show. Pat Kelleher, speaking on behalf of the Lions Club, said that participating in stage productions can change one's life for the better. Noel Howard, KHAS, said that they too are in the business of promoting cultural goals and preserving our heritage. Twenty contestants from Cork city and county took part and ten of these qualified for the final, to be held in the City Hall on Sunday, May Pat Kelleher, Codrum, Macroom represented Macroom Senior Citizens and it came as no surprise to all who have seen him perform that he is through to the final.
A strong contingent from Macroom was in the City Hall to support Pat at the semi-finals and it is expected that a great crowd of Macrompians will again attend the final to cheer on our local talent. Unfortunately, the date of the final clashes with Macroom Senior Citizen holiday in Athlone, so many of Pat's supporters will miss out on the event.
March Player of the Month: She will travel to Dublin on Tuesday 16 April to receive her award from the Association. Visit to the Poor Clare Convent: The sisters issued an invitation and the school was delighted to accept. The sisters warmly greeted the visiting students.

The visit raised the girls' awareness of another type of lifestyle and value system. What they found most amazing was the sisters' happiness. The Poor Clare Sisters made it a fun meeting for the students and they spoke of the centrality of Christ in their lives.
Student Account of Visit: On Thursday, 7th February , the 1A1 class of St. We had previously written to the nuns and were delighted when they replied individually to each student. We then went and visited the nuns in their Closed Order Convent. We gave the nuns some presents: They then went on to talk about their life in the convent and we would all agree that it was an experience not to be forgotten. The nuns told us about their lifestyles, how they grow their own food in the garden, the times they pray and go to Mass and how they chose a vegetarian lifestyle, excluding fish.
The nuns were also very interested to find out about the changes in Macroom Town, especially Sister Mary, who grew up in the town itself. They told us that they were very close to God and lived their life abiding by his ways, trusting him completely. It was a very exciting day and I'm sure no one will forget it anytime soon. Their project was outstanding and it was displayed in City Hall in Cork. Students then visited City Hall with their English teacher, Ms.

It was reported that work days had worked very well with good numbers out on 3 Saturday mornings litter picking and washing signs and bins. It was also said that we could possibly power wash and paint an odd house, with the permission of owner. The scouts were asking for suitable work for them to do. Adopt a Road Scheme was being promoted. Litter Challenge is coming up in May and 3 new estates were selected for entry: Sweeper was promised in a few weeks and we will get notice. Jackie Hickey will not be doing the flowers. The question of using a shop window to display pics, bronze medal, etc was raised.
We could also use the display board in the town centre island. A full page ad in the Lee Valley was suggested in advance of litter league, giving details of the competition. Newsletter may also be done. It was also suggested that a longer feature article on the Tidy Towns be written, several pages for publication and circulation. Application for the Litter Challenge was to be completed.
Tidy Towns Application is to be done, and Town Clerk will have to be involved. Work planned for Sat next 13th, meet at Castle, painting and cleaning. Copy of contacts was circulated as well as copies of critical comments in the Tidy Towns competition. Macroom Senior Citizens, in association with the Briery Gap, have planned a very full programme of events for the forthcoming Bealtaine Festival. It opens on Thursday, May 2 with a performance by Soundsphere in the Fr.

Some of the entertainment on the day was "Animal Road Show", which was a great attraction. Face painting, a clown, and loads of indoor games were available to the children all day. Well done to all in Clann Aire and especially to the founder members for having the foresight to drive on with this project in different times, for providing local employment, and the great care they give to all the children. Clann Aire cares for children from 4 months to 12 years. At present there are children availing of the full day care facilities and 27 children attending pre school services.

Mass in Community Hall: A great day was had in Donoughmore when a Family Fun Day was held to launch the fundraising drive to build a local playground.
The Animal Roadshow provided the entertainment as youngsters and their parents thronged the Family Resource Centre to catch a glimpse of snakes, lizards and other exotic creatures. The event marked the launch of fundraising to build a playground in Donoughmore. It is hoped that, with the generous support of the community, Donoughmore Playground should be up and running for the end of the summer.
Renovations at the community centre are almost complete.
Meetings can be booked at and will be held in the newly built meeting rooms. Parking is open again at the front and back of the community centre. Music by John White. Neva took the lives of people, making it the worst of only five convict shipwrecks that occurred in almost eight decades of transportation between the then UK and Australia.
