It took me a second to remember where book 1 left off but by page 5 I was back to speed and engrossed in the story. I really, really, really, really, really enjoyed this book. I actually enjoyed both books immensely. I picked up the e-books on Amazon for a bargain price I've spent under 5 dollars on both and I wasn't expecting much from them. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong. Great story-telling, likable characters, intricate plot and lore -- what more could I want? Please keep in mind if you haven't read Mortal Obligaton, there will be spoilers in my review. Mortal Defiance starts off just mere days where Mortal Obligation left off. But worse than that, Ree is having to deal with the shock of a lifetime, knowing her brother Tristen never really died, but became a Dark One.

Try hiding that one from your parents! And as if tha Please keep in mind if you haven't read Mortal Obligaton, there will be spoilers in my review. Yes, even when the world is days away from a possible war that could destroy the earth, a girl needs at least two guys fighting over her. Nichole Chase is an absolute darling, and her writing is pretty awesome too! She tells a story like no other. I do believe I loved this second book more than the first. Could it be the toe-curling romance that finally takes off between a certain female and her guardian?

See a Problem?

All those months of waiting definitely paid off, Mortal Defiance is super fast-paced, with the whole book taking place in the span of about one week, there is always something happening! I am always intrigued by anything to do involving ancient myths, and Nichole Chase includes a plethora of gods from multiple cultures. The way she has woven them into the story is truly original and well written. The characters are also something that I really love about this series, they are all strong and have a distinct personality of their own.

If you like Mortal Obligation, you will definitely enjoy the sequel. It is an excellent edition to a great trilogy, and I am anxiously awaiting the conclusion. May 20, Turquoise marked it as never-to-the-ever. I searched Worst Villain on Google and this came up: The villains of Mortal Obligations is that lame. I remember reading Mortal Obligations or whatever its name is. I did not finish that book, but I skip to the last few pages to find that the villain view spoiler [her brother hide spoiler ].

It wasn't that Mortal Obligations was that horrid of a book that I had to stop reading, still, it would kill me to finish it. See, the thing is that I hated. HATED books with the female protagonist harboring a not-so-secret crush for her brother's best friend. That was also the reason why I lost interest in Hunting Lila. Poor Lila, that book had potential. But not this book. True, I said that Mortal Obligations was not as horrid as a one star deserved. Blame it on the dialogue. SO that's a no no for Mortal Defiance. Since I know the dark side will not succeed base on their so-call bad-ass skills?

Yeah, they should be ashamed , there really isn't a point for me to continue reading the trilogy. Jan 14, Ashley Lavering rated it it was amazing. I loved how this book kept the tension going. There was action with the Dark Ones and there was tension with the romance. I really loved this read and the world that she has created.

The love triangle was complicated even further in this book. I have to say that the way the book ended was awesome!!! And I have my fingers crossed that one of the guys from the love triangle will get together with on I loved how this book kept the tension going. Rate this PG for swearing and violence lots of fight scenes. I gave this book five stars. Originally posted at www. Jan 16, Paige rated it really liked it. I would rate this book 4. The transition between the first book and the second is very smoothly written. She didn't feel the need to restate everything that happened in the previous book, just the essentials. It's well written as well as a unique story line. Cannot wait until March so that I may delve further into this world.

Dec 16, Stephany rated it it was amazing. Just finished Mortal Defiance, and I loved it! I read a lot of YA type novels, I have not seen anything like this Trilogy. I am very addicted, I love all the lil twists and surprises Nichole works in there. The ending left me dying for more!! I can't wait till March!! And I can't wait to see what other worlds Nichole has in store to introduce us to! Mar 16, Dianne rated it it was amazing. There is just something about this series that gets to me! The characters are so well-defined, the romantic tension is building!

Mortal Defiance added so much to this series, Nichole Chase has done an excellent job of building Ree's world! Jan 09, Mya rated it it was amazing. Discovering that most of the people she knows are not quite human was a shock, but finding out her beloved brother Tristan, long thought dead and buried, may be responsible for a string of vampire-like murders, pushed Ree over the edge.

Junior year in high school should not be this complicated. Darklings and godlings, Vampires and guardians, gods and immortals should only be read about in books, but Ree is living a nightmare. The gods were after Ree and the guardians were confused as to the why. Her nightmares and dreams were premonitions and messages. Warnings from the gods. And when the god of war and the god of mischief are involved, you know someone is taking sides. Believing her son was dead was nothing compared to discovering he was going to cause the end of the world.

Sending their parents away was probably for the best. The Dark Ones were attacking en masse and the small group of Guardians were sadly outnumbered especially when two of their own would not survive the fights. Nichole Chase did a superb job keeping my interest. I read the novel in one sitting, hoping to find out what happens next. Another great instalment in the Dark Betrayal Trilogy. Mortal Defiance (Dark Betrayal Trilogy, book 2) by Nichole Chase

Most of this book is taken up with teenage angst over what guy to choose, I just wish she would choose already. All this back and forth, I am getting whiplash so no wonder the guys are confused and a decision has to be made. On learning that she is the reincarnation of Tria, she then second guesses her feelings for Roland and Pagan.

The constant tug of war with her heart causes more hurt as Roland dreams of renewing their relationship even though Ree doesn't remember it but she starts getting flashes of memories in her dreams. Pagan is vying between wanting to protect her as a sister yet having feelings for her that he can't deny. One minute he is kissing her and the next he completely ignores her which has Ree feeling confused and insecure as she has been crushing on Pagan since they were kids.

I can empathise with Roland as it would be hard to lose your soul-mate and then have eternity to mourn her and he now feels he has been given a second chance and wants to fight for Ree. Lives will be lost, friend mourned and Ree will question whether the Gods have stacked the deck against her. She has a wonderful circle of friends who are there to protect her and their individual personalities are endearing. Ultimately brother and sister will face off in the final battle, is Ree strong enough to win? Tristan has not been fighting fair and has been gaining additional power to secure his chances of defeating her.

I look forward to the next book in this series. Oct 23, Andrea rated it really liked it. I'm finding it very difficult to review this book without giving spoilers for it and for Mortal Obligation, so I'm going to be vague, but hopefully helpful, here. Mortal Defiance picks up very shortly after the shocking end to book one. Ree, her friends and family are dealing with the consequences of the revelations and loss. Their enemies won't wait, though, so they must all get it together quickly, and battle fo Mortal Defiance is the very strong follow-up to Nichole Chase's Mortal Obligation.

Their enemies won't wait, though, so they must all get it together quickly, and battle for their lives. They must also contend with their constantly evolving powers, and dynamic. I really like how Chase has taken several different paranormal elements: Vampires, Gods, Demi-Gods, and created her own spin on each element. Her world-building is very detailed, but not confusing, and I appreciate her thoroughness. I loved how the relationship between Ree and Paden has developed.

Their attraction to one another felt authentic, not forced, and had just the right amount of steam. I find it very annoying in stories, and unrealistic, when the main character spends more time swooning that fighting when the world is falling down around her. Ree is falling in love, but that comes second to staying alive. Both boys seem to be good choices for Ree, and that makes for an excellent dilemma.

Mortal Defiance took everything I enjoyed about Mortal Obligation: I'm really excited to see how it all goes down in book three, Immortal Grave.

Jun 03, Autumn Review rated it really liked it Shelves: I read this entire book while sitting in an ER waiting room. I sat there from 3pm-9pm. One good thing about it, was that it was like sitting in my own paranormal world. I felt like I was right there with Ree, fighting off bad guys. Ok, now on THIS story. Mortal Obligation book 1 ends with a bang.

I was left anxious and wanting more of the story. I felt like I was getting a clearer picture of Funny story: I felt like I was getting a clearer picture of where the story was going. I still like Ree. In fact, I liked her even more in this book. She's a strong lead character that isn't afraid to get in the thick of a fight. Ree is determined to keep her family and friends safe. While she's often conflicted about her past lives memories and her current feelings, there is no doubt in my mind that Paden is the one for her.

Yes, Roland is attractive in his own right, but Paden takes the prize for me. The only girl I look forward to seeing walk into a room. When I'm not with you, all I can think about is getting back to you. A night full of frightening surprises leaves Ree with unsettling news. Gifted by the gods with unusual powers, she must devote herself to a battle that could very well lead to not only her death, but the demise of everyone she knows and loves. After all, Ree is the only mortal standing between the Earth and utter darkness.

Not only does she have the weight of the world on her shoulders, but she still has to juggle homework, a job, and a curfew. While Ree tries to find her footing amidst the chaos, the Dark Ones and their champion are busy hunting down any humans that have a touch of the gods running through their veins. Allies have turned into foes, and enemies have become stronger. The world is growing darker, but the passion between Ree and two irresistible guys blazes hotter. Romantic ties from a past life will threaten to break Ree away from the love of her life and will cloud her judgment.

In order to follow her heart, Ree will break rules put in place by the gods, risking her life and the lives of her friends in an act of Mortal Defiance. Immortal Grave Book 3 While darklings ransack the city, Ree and her friends will learn the depth of the gods' manipulations. Unsure of who is really on their side, Ree must accept her destiny and assume the role of leader. The stakes are higher than they've ever been.
