Despite her problems undertanding other people--think Temperance Brennan in the "Bones" TV series--Mike was an easy character to like and to cheer for as her life crumbled around her and she was forced to reevaluate her perspective on nearly everything. I will admit that as a teacher I'm tired of the cliche of the burned out or unemployed executive who finds redemption in the super-easy field of teaching, but I appreciated the acknolwedgement that it is a rough job that does not come easily, and that it is pretty exhausting.
Still, who teaches one class a day? Mike's relationship with her students was both touching and believable as she revamped a "life skills" class to take it from home economics to the kinds of instruction kids should get and never do--how to talk to people, how to navigate life in a big city--and she learns more about herself, and her ability to interact with others in a personal rather than professional capacity. Her personal growth was funny and touching, and I would definitely recommend the book as one to read and re-read. From the excerpt and initial synopsis, I thought this would be a great book but I was deffinitely dissapointed.
That she finds satisfaction teaching young girls was nice but not realizing what she had in her "best friend" and constantly going back to her useless "mentor" was frustrating. By the end, I just wanted to slap her and tell her to "wake up and get a life".

I definitely wouldn't read this again. This book was a great fast read - I had not read anything by Ellen Shanman before, but had seen a review for this book.
Everything Nice
My attention was held throughout the book. I will however caution that if you are looking for a challenging read, this is not it. A neat story and fairly predictable. Ellen Shanman has a lot to say--most of it hilarious--about families, yoga, careers, education, friendship and romance. Worth reading -- classic fish out of water story.
