I am mostly happy with the ending. Hopefully there will be another story, showing us this new world. Jul 05, Soo rated it liked it Shelves: I really like how Smith makes you think that everything is totally freaking awful and yet it doesn't turn out that way every time. The way he weaves in hope is great. There are definite themes that recur within the plot and characters. I'm okay with that. It shows how similar events can be despite happening at different times and with different people.
Just when I thought the rest of the original crew would be lost, I felt gleeful to hear about how they Mini-Review: Just when I thought the rest of the original crew would be lost, I felt gleeful to hear about how they managed to stay alive. There's a lot of information about the Variants and the effects of the massive destruction on the people, places and things. It makes the story close to home. I could end the series here and not feel bad.
That's what the author intended. Since I have in a trilogy set, I will keep going into the next book. That one will decide if I want to grab book 7. If you like great core characters, action and the survival of the human race among monsters, you will enjoy this series.
Feb 02, Jenny Jo Weir rated it it was amazing Shelves: Heck to the yeah! Nicholas does it again. This man does not disappoint. I am unable to convey the awesomeness of these books. If you want action, suspense and great characters, read this series!!! Nov 08, Kate rated it it was amazing. Seven weeks into the end of the world, and the action is still going strong!!! This series is really epic-all the books are smashing!
Nov 01, Anita rated it it was amazing. Actually found Nicholas's Extinction series by accident as I was browsing sci-fi titles. All of his books have you on the edge of your seat as his characters come to life, battling freaky monsters or humans turned traitor, trying to save the world.
I'm from the generation who loved Lassie and Rin Tin Actually found Nicholas's Extinction series by accident as I was browsing sci-fi titles. I'm from the generation who loved Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Those dogs were heroes and Apollo follows in their footsteps as one of the bravest canines ever!
The Extinction series, as well as his other books, is a must read for anyone who loves sci-fi or apocalyptic genres. You won't be disappointed. Was in that terribly good place where you're reading quickly to see how it ends, but forcing yourself to slow because you don't want it to. Very much looking forward to see where Book 6 takes me.
Full review to come. May 24, Melissa Levine rated it it was amazing Shelves: I could have seen the series end here. There's a part when everyone is out in the streets, the good guys are shooting at the Varients, while the civilians cower in fear essentially. Reed ends up spotting Kate, and Jenny spots her father. Now I don't know I could have seen the series end here.
Unless she was randomly laying on the ground After injecting the young Variant, Ellis ends up wiping "salt water" from his forehead. Now, he hadn't just come from the beach, so why not just say he wiped sweat? I might be the only one here, but I felt like Thomas was a very minor character. Yet, there seemed to be a good amount of references more than what you'd think for this type of character from other characters about his death.
They're both main characters who are about to say their final words, important ones, yet they die before they get the words completely out. Was it dark already when the gang arrived at the place where they thought they saw white wolves forgot the name of it while flying overhead?
I was under the impression that they were flying there during the day, but when they find the Variant claw, it's nighttime because the moon is out, yet it's only been a short while. Why would the humans help the Variants? I can't figure that out. Yes, they wouldn't be killed hopefully , but they wouldn't really have a life either. I wish more rewards would have been given at the end of this book. At least to the dog!
In the end, this was another great story to add to the series. I think book 4 is my favorite so far though. As previously stated in book 4's review, I feel like I've grown used to the way the narrator narrates, if that makes sense. When I started book 1, there was something off about his narrating. By the end of book 3 having listened straight through , I felt he was doing a great job. Pausing for several weeks, I then began listening to book 4 and that 'something off' feeling came back.
But again, going straight to book 5, I feel like he's doing a pretty good job. For example, when an action scene arrives, he'll talk faster and it adds to the overall anxiety, tension kind of feeling. I guess I'm still on the fence for this narrator. On to book 6. Feb 19, Banshee rated it it was ok Shelves: This novel follows Team Ghost as they rescue the Plum Island survivors from the Variants and the final military attack against the Variants and the Juveniles. Team Ghost is sent to Washington and one of the highest concentration of enemies. The This novel follows Team Ghost as they rescue the Plum Island survivors from the Variants and the final military attack against the Variants and the Juveniles.
The characters are okay but Kate was such a stereotype.
She is being hauled away by an enemy that eats people and she is worried about her baby and what the damage the jostling may be doing to it. What would the point of that be if they need human bodies to eat? And there was so much American is Great that I really started to get annoyed. Here are a few examples: In my opinion book 3 is where the series started to get silly and book 4 and 5 were some of the worst.
This is my third time reading the series. Jan 10, Gabe Detweiler rated it it was amazing. When i was reading this book it made me feel as if I was there in the moment. Dec 21, Erik Dabel rated it it was ok. Book 5 of the series. Interesting twist on the popular subject, bringing some science into the zombie apocalypse genre. I've already read the second book, and have just started the third. These books are a quick and entertaining read, and would probably make a great movie series. I'd give it 4 stars, but at times it reads like a video game with a good plot but lacking in quality dialogue, and at other times it seems like a military fans but not an actual military members wet dream, complete with the "world needs more heroes like this" mixes with the most cliche, cheesy dialogue possible. But still, they are well worth the read. Oct 03, Amy rated it really liked it.

If I'd been on the Sansbury train at the time the book was released, that would have ticked me off but since I knew there was another book it was okay. The book gives readers a relatively tidy end to the story, but as can be expected in the apocalypse--what can go wrong, will. Ther True to its name, this book was the official end to the Extinction series. There were a few really interesting, though short- lived, character additions.
Older characters came to the forefront which explained why they survived. Sansbury is crafty at setting up scenes with hints of what is to come so you're ready, but still surprised. Not a bad book, overall. Aug 13, Lisa rated it it was amazing. Awesome end that I'm glad isn't the actual end! Every book in this series ramps up the pressure and this one is no exception. While we can finally see an end in sight for American, not everyone sees the same end being the right one and no matter what choice is made people are going to die.

They keep making a bigger monster, now can they defeat it? I loved this book, the action, the tension, the curve balls, the friendships and family that they continue to build. Every book gets better in this series and I can't wait to jump into 6! Jul 13, Mary Hartshorn rated it it was amazing. What a great way to lead into Fitz's stories! Fitz is an incredible Marine, who despite losing his legs in a battle before has not let this stop him.
If anything this has made him even stronger and better than he ever was. I look forward to reading his story in the next installments. I highly recommend this series!!! Jul 28, Brad Marsh rated it it was amazing. This fifth book in the series grabbed hold of me, sucked me in, and didn't let go or give me time to catch my breath from the first chapter. I am sincerely hopeful we will all get to visit with team ghost again in the future. Feb 28, Todd Gers rated it it was amazing. The Extinction Cycle Series
What an awesome journey so far. This book does a great job of bringing closure to the current storyline while leaving it open for more in the future. This series is fantastic, with great adventure and character development. Jan 31, Anita L. Best series in a longtime The first book about VX and Lt. Brett was interesting but it didn't hook me. The author's storytelling keeps on getting better and better. Rather than get burdened down by blow by blow military maneuvers which I don't enjoy or science that tries to explain things to the nth degree, the author has created a very enjoyable, fictional world that revolves around the characters and their struggles with a man made virus that has mutated humans into something nightmarish. I was kept on the edge of my recliner going through ups and downs, smiles and laughs and sniffles and sadness.
As the battle between Variants and their offspring and Team Ghost intensifies and comes to a conclusion, we lose some of our heroes and find budding romance between others. There were several scenes that really got to me on an emotional level. We see the good in people who are desperate give their all to ensure the survival of the human race and the bad in desperate people who lack faith in others.
Extinction End (Extinction Cycle, book 5) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
There were times I wanted to jump into the story and strangle some people! As I got closer and closer to the end I kept wanting it to go on and on. But this story must come to an end unfortunately. The conclusion and epilogue were wonderfully written and unlike other series I've read, did justice to the characters we've come to love. I, for one, would love to see the Extinction Cycle made into a movie. It's fun to imagine who I'd pick as actors for the characters.
I have it all planned out!!! I wholeheartedly recommend the Extinction Cycle series to anyone that loves the zombie, post apocalyptic genre! Completely perfect ending to this incredible series.

I agree with many other reviewers that NSS really needs to try and shop this around to see if anyone would go for adapting it to a screenplay for a movie. I read a lot of these book series and very often find myself going satisfied to unsatisfied to Many lack the consistency of storyline and character discipline that NSS has with this series. I am sad to see it end but it was done in the right way.
